I wonder what went on behind the scenes here. If the Mets just flat out pulled their offer, preferring to take the likely compensatory pick next year, then fine. That's a cold business decision, but it's a cold business.
However, if the Mets lowballed Boras/Rocker, then shame on them. Particularly since they literally cannot spend the money that they saved elsewhere.
Also, as some are pointing out, the Mets blew it by not taking out "insurance" on Rocker. By this I mean using a late round pick to draft a high schooler with a high round grade, but who has been bypassed because he plans to go to college. If your first round pick falls through (which it did), you take that money and throw it at this other kid, figuring that he'll change his mind about college. And you still keep the compensatory pick next year. Unfortunately, the Mets did not do that.
