Here is the Bobby Bonilla story. There were two separate Met tenures.
The first began in 1992 when he signed a then-record 5 year contract. He had a subpar 1992 but came back with all star seasons in 1993 and 1995. Then at the 1995 trading deadline he was moved to the Orioles for a can't miss prospect named Alex Ochoa, who didn't meet expectations.
Had that been the end of Bonilla's Met career, he would have been remembered somewhat more fondly. However...
Bonilla's contract expired after the 1996 season. The Florida Marlins were in spending mode and signed him to a four year deal. He immediately helped lead the Marlins to the WS championship in 1997. But then the Marlins realized that on-field success did not translate to financial success (at least not in Florida) and conducted one of their periodic fire sales. They unloaded him to the Dodgers in 1998, who at season's end traded him to the Mets in exchange for Mel Rojas, who Met fans were happy to see go. Bonilla had two years left on his contract at this point.
Bonilla then proceeded to have a miserable 1999, capped by his infamous locker room card game with Ricky Henderson when their teammates were locked in an elimination game. (Some of us remember it as the Kenny Rogers game.) At that point it was a given that he'd never wear a Met uniform again. Problem was, he still had a year left on his contract. And the rest is history...
