Does anyone know if Naquin and Ruf are both rentals?
Naquin is a FA after the year. Ruf is here.

Ruf trade looking worse and worse. Gave up 4 pieces for a guy to completely miss series. He might get less than 100 ABs with us. Meanwhile Vientos is just tearing up AAA.

Not good. You can't be having Vientos blocked by Ruf who will be 37 next season.

braves winning already.
To the surprise of absolutely no one. Could have called in a sweep before that series started. Pirates have no lineup but at least they have no starting pitching to go along with that. We have 6 games against them and need to do the exact same thing. None of that let's get 2 of 3 nonsense.

Loathed the Ruf trade from minute 1
Ruf seems like a guy we could have gotten for much less…and although Vogelbach has been decent, trading Holderman for him still bugs the crap out of me. I hate seeing Alonso and Vogelbach back to back in the lineup. It’s like 600 lbs potentially on base at the same time.

We open @Marlins and @Brewers. Close at home vs. Marlins and Philthies.
In case 2023 comes down to Mets vs. Phillies (which I doubt) it will be a very exciting conclusion. The two teams meet only six times prior to September 21 and then seven out of the last ten.

Interesting that some teams have announced their home start times but Mets have not.

Schedule is as follows:

- 13 games vs Divisional Rivals
- 6 or 7 games ( 4 teams) vs other NL teams
- 4 games vs Evil Empire
- 3 games vs all other AL teams.

Someone is going to win 115-120 games
Replacing 6 games vs Mets Braves for A’s tigers
Divisional Teams play Yankees and Astros 6 less times to play pirates cubs reds Nats

At least it will seem more equitable than this year where you have something like the Mets playing a total of 8 games between Houston and NYY vs Atlanta only 3 and none against NYY.
And with Atl luck, they would have faced the NYY now and not the beginning of the year.

I think the main benefit of the schedule change is that it makes the wildcard race more equitable. Brewers/Cards (whomever finishes second) won't fatten up quite as much on the Cubs, Reds, and Pirates.

The Phillies haven't closed in NY since 1996.

I was at a twi-nighter at Shea on the final Saturday of the season in 1965.

The Phillies won the first game,6-0,then the second went 18 innings scoreless before the NY State curfew went into effect.

Ron Swoboda must have known something was coming as he got himself ejected in the bottom of the first.
Rob Gardner and Chris Short each went 15 innings, the last time in MLB that both pitchers went that far. It's highly unlikely that the feat will ever be matched.

To top off the weekend, the teams played a doubleheader the next day.The Mets dropped both, the last in 13 innings. They scored only 2 runs in 49 innings.

Have no idea why they didn't just schedule 14 games (even home / even away) with your division rivals and 6 games vs all other league rivals. Why do you need to play 4 league rivals 4x at the expense of an even 7 home / 7 road games vs divisional rivals?

Weird......

The FCL Mets are in the playoffs today. They have a 1 game semi with the FCL Rays and then if they win they would have a 3 game series in the FCL WS. I think but not confirmed they probably kept Parada in the FCL team instead of promoting him to St. Lucie to help with the playoffs.

Mangum is interesting. He was an older prospect (college senior) who was drafted basically because he was willing to sign for peanuts. This helped build a war chest to sign Matt Allan. Mangum was not highly regarded. But if the Mets lose Nimmo, he may find himself in the CF mix.

Yeah pretty much but he actually was still well regarded. Mets actually drafted him 2 years in a row before signing him the second year for only $20K. Jim Callis thought he was still one of the better seniors when he signed. The first time we drafted him he was also ranked within the top 200 draft prospects which is still high.

From Callis at the time:

@jimcallisMLB
4th-rder Jake Mangum signs with @Mets for $20k (pick 118 value = $487,900). Mississippi State OF, all-time SEC hits leaders, one of top senior signs in @MLBDraft, contact hitter with well above-average speed, good defender with plus arm in CF.

Not sure what else Mark Vientos needs to do for a call up. I can't imagine he won't be here next week when the rosters expand.

I can absolutely imagine him not being here. The roster is only expanding by two - from 26 to 28.

Currently we have 14 position players and 12 pitchers. Normally it's 13 and 13, we're temporarily going light on pitchers due to the two off days. It's quite possible that we add two pitchers, and go 14 and 14.

Plus remember we have Guillorme and Escobar coming back. Guillorme will replace Whatshisname. (You know, the guy who replaced the previous Whatshisname, who was called in when Guillorme got hurt.) Whose spot does Escobar take? Baty's?

Another possibility is that they bring back Jankowski, who isn't all that good, but fills a non-redundant role.

They could and probably will go back to two catchers, which frees a spot. They could also drop Ruf, but I don't see that happening, yet.

Vientos is 1B/DH. He can play 3B but you don't really want him to. The Ruf trade was non-sensical in terms of what we gave up and not just handing the job to Vientos before the deadline. Sure Ruf might get a big hit or two coming up but who's to say Vientos wouldn't have either if he was given the opportunity.

If you don't make the Ruf trade, Davis keeps his job. Vientos is screwed either way.

Not necessarily. They could have used Davis for a pen arm or another piece. Or he would have just kept floundering here and they could have DFAd him.
Fair enough, but the fact that it took Davis plus three to get Ruf, suggests that Davis had very little market value.

I'm not in those conversations so I don't know what his value around the league was but they still could have just moved on from him like they have with Dom. We got fleeced on the Ruf deal. Davis is still mashing the ball for SF as well because of course he is. .273/.373/.568

For the moment at least, we're watching a prospect like Vientos not hitting at all in the majors. It was not unreasonable to try to get a proven major leaguer to come in and hit lefties. Fans always want to bring up prospects, which I get. But just because the Braves do it successfully doesn't mean that any team can do so and be successful. Vientos has warts and has never been in the majors. Maybe he gets a shot in the next couple of weeks, maybe not. We'll see. But I don't find the Mets decision not to try him yet non-sensical.

It was non-sensical not to try to him before the deadline to see what what you had before you went into the trade market. Agreed no one knows if he would have hit here right away but he should have been given the opportunity. Plenty of us were clamoring for it.

You've wedded yourself to the term non-sensical, which isn't going to help your position. Whatever tryout period that you've decided would have been sufficient for the Mets to conduct while they are trying to win a division would never bring Vientos, Baty, or any other prospect to the point that the Mets would come away with a projection that they would be making the right decision with the prospect that would be more reliable than years of performance by a proven major leaguer. In other words, it wouldn't have meant enough. Now, that doesn't mean that the proven major leaguer would be the better choice, or the other way around. But it's reasonable management, and nowhere close to nonsensical. If Ruf were hitting his career average against lefties, instead of struggling some in a whopping 26 at bats, this wouldn't even be a conversation.

I sort of agree with this and...the Mets are in a position to say- win it NOW!...
Ruf/Vogey history against their opposite pitchers...are historically very good at DH. Use them both as a platoon and thier MLB history would tell you that you have somewhere around a 250-270 hitter with 30 HR's. We were about to get .200 and maybe 15HR from Davis/Smith

I actually love Davis, he just always seemed like a hard nosed old school player. But, he was not doing it for us. I even hope he can establish himself and become a full time player.

Long term- while we do actually now have a legit DH platoon- you can either bring up Vientos or Baty- From watching- Baty seems to have a baby face but major maturity - some failure at this level does not look like it will hurt him- Maybe, that is part of the decision as well as we just need 3B.
And with that said- Vientos is crushing it- would love to see what he can do but- if Escobar and JG are coming back- if you call him up, it is like shelving him.

These are the things fans and sports radio guys love to argue about.
Been happy with the addition of Vogelbach, and to a lesser degree, Ruf. Nobody knows if bringing someone up from the minors would have worked or not, but perhaps best to let them develop at the lower level. I'm not in tune to the minors like a lot of you guys are.

Championship team ?
20-5 stretch starts tonight !!!
No excuses , bad teams , wear down their one good starter and get into their bullpen.
Need several 10-2 9-0 games where Lindor marte Alonso can sit on bench the last 2 innings
