Was with you up to the last sentence.

This may be a contrarian opinion, but I don't want Cohen to say F the tax. I don't want him to be the second coming of George Steinbrenner. I despised Steinbrenner and everything he stood for as being bad for the game. I still believe that, and will not be hypocritical.
It's a good thing that I never really cared much about George Steinbrenner, so now I can thoroughly enjoy Steve Cohen's spending without an ounce of guilt.

Unless Steve Cohen plans on purchasing a whole new farm system from rookie ball through AAA, if you want to see championships before you die....Uncle Stevie needs to spend and we need to love it.

I was at a concert last night, and loosely following the game on a gamecast. There was an intermission, and checked in. Does the bitching ever stop about catcher not hitting--it's a water is wet post every single night. Alonso whiffed 3 times. The bullpen is not perfect. The Mets competed and came up short. The Braves lost to an inferior team. The Phillies have been slaughtered the last two games against the Diamondbacks. It's baseball.
Look at it this way: the Mets didn't address their weaknesses (bullpen or catching), and they have resources, and we, as fans, are supposed to swallow that elephant with no water. Meanwhile, the average fan can't buy an attitude adjustment, so we are all at a crossroads.

WTF is up with the Phillies getting shelled by the Diamondbacks? Not trying to deflect attention, but Bryce Harper is back and they tagged Nola for 8 runs, Suarez for 6 runs in the last two games, scoring a total of 12 and 13 runs.

Getting Harper back is one thing, but losing Wheeler was a more significant blow. They lack depth at the pitcher position, and to lose your ace is mind-blowing.

I don't see it as a spend, spend, spend plan long term. Many of the moves that the Mets have made, including those that get tarred and feathered here, are clearly aimed at preserving draft picks and minor-league capital to enable the development of a strong minor-league system. They have adopted an approach intended to refortify the minor leagues while spending money without losing picks, so that at some point the minors can regularly produce top talent. I'm good with that.

I don't like that "measuring stick" cliche. We play 162 games, same as everyone else. When they are done, we take accurate measurements.
LAD is the team to beat. If we expect to win a ring, we likely have to get thru them, so this is an important series to scrutinize.

With that said, we beat LAD 499 times out of 500 in '88 and then Cone opened his trap, so all the regular season intel immediately got thrown out the window.

I disagree with first paragraph. LA may sweep us this series. Or we may take one of three. Maybe two of three. If we meet again in October, none of the above will mean a damn thing.

We'll agree to disagree. It took the first half inning of the first game of last year's series at Citi to see we were absolutely nowhere close to them (the way Turner, Muncy, etc. ground out ABs).

Somebody important was also watching because in the off-season we added players who did the same and made it a point of emphasis in our offensive approach this year.

In 1988 The Dodgers lost 10 of 11 games to the Mets during the regular season. Dodgers beat the Mets in the playoffs.

In 2015 IIRC we lost all seven regular season games to the Cubs and then swept them in the NLCS. Strange things happen in October.

Why is Darin Ruf batting 5th?

The angst over the Baez deal is misplaced imo. The Mets didn’t collapse because of Javy Baez. The Mets collapsed because of injuries to DeGrom, Lindor, etc. If the Mets stayed healthy Baez and his 890 OPS he had with The Mets would have been a difference maker. You can argue that with DeGrom iffy then no big “let’s go for it” deal involving rentals should have been made. I won’t argue against that. I agree with it.

That argument doesn’t hold with THIS roster at THIS time. The Mets had a few obvious holes heading into the deadline which prevents them from being pennant favorites.

LH DH
4th OF
RH DH
Bullpen
Catcher

The GM only improved 2 of those 5 weak spots. That is a piss poor job. ABSOLUTELY PISS POOR.

I didn't get to see last night's game live but while out at lunch, they had it playing on one of the TV's- my thoughts on JR's pitching performance.
It was no where as bad as the boxscore and most of you guys made it seem.
The Freeman double- switch is on and JR comes inside- Freeman either got lucky or used every bit of his HOF bat to hit that slow ground ball down the 3B line. It wasn't a bad pitch
Then you have the AB by Lux- I think it may have been the 2nd pitch- looked like an easy strike that was called a ball- would have made Lux's 2nd strike, that he looked bad on, a K. And then, even with the hit up the middle- JR did get just a little too much plate but the pitch had Lux completely fooled and he ended up just getting a great hit as he was way off balance.

Not defending the guy in general, but the inning itself- was not because of bad pitching.

Have to understand that certain guys once they are in the crosshairs are the villain/goat no matter what. Myself for all of the why is Joely even on the team posts, I pin last night's loss more on the failures of Alonso in mutiple 1st and 3rd less than 2 out situations. But if the go-ahead run had scored on a ball between an infielder's legs some posters would have blamed Joely for allowing a ball to be put in play.

Frustration obsession with McCann is put perfectly in this article….”NON Competitive at bats !”
Pitches 6 inches low and 6 inches outside just waved at OR getting blown away by 3 mediocre fastballs right down middle

In the article, they laud Vogelbach. The message board geniuses here hate him too because he looks at too many strikes. 🙄
Obviously, the Astros won the Vasquez trade because they offered more than the Mets.

believe me- I do not have confidence when Joely is coming in but last night- I had to follow via the MLB gameday and what people were posting- all I saw and heard is giving up a leadoff double to Freeman, HBP and a single up the middle to lose the lead- I really thought he got rocked.

As I stated earlier- Freeman either got real lucky and his double trickled past an open 3rd base, or Freeman showed exactly why he is a HOF player. and he should have had the K on Lux before Lux actually really put a professional hit that also was not hit hard and he was completely fooled on the pitch and was way off balance and just got that ball the only place it could go.

I believe, that since I do read a lot of the posts in this thread, Ottavino should be DFA's with his +7 ERA and Lugo is a complete bust and must also have at least a 5 era...

Baty out UCL tear of his thumb. Most likely done for the year.
This sucks. Although he’s struggling a bit, he almost certainly would have kept getting better. Now, in addition to a bullpen of 2-3 pitchers, the Mets have almost no hope in the bottom third of the lineup, and two dead DHs that they insist on batting 5th.

….and why Gore instead of Vientos?

Another winner called up
31 year old ,67 MLB at bats 224 0 HR
40 SB. Called up a pinch runner for Vogey’s key walk in late innings 👍🏻

5-7 160 LB. Right handed Billy Hamilton

Lots of roster spots taken up by partial (situational) players (Gore, Vogelbach, Ruf).

Lindor with the correct approach vs change up pitcher. Wait longer go to the opposite field. The other 3 not do much.
