Transactions du jour:

Scherzer to IL (you already knew that)

Veteran lefty Alex Claudio called up. He will get a shot at the "second lefty in the pen" role. He follows in the footsteps of Chasen Shreve, Thomas Szapucki, Sam Clay, Rob Zastryzny, and Nate Fisher.

Yoan Lopez returns for the day as 29th man.

Medina DFA'd.

Seems like they expended a lot of energy in the Dodgers series and just don't have much left in the tank right now. We're an older team so it is sort of expected to dip as season has gone on. I am not too concerned and it's going to be a fight with the Braves for the division until the season ends. We'll have a series with them that will probably decide it.

We need Alonso and Lindor to get back on track and then the offense should start to look good again. We're getting no production out of DH so those moves are not looking great. C still a black hole and RP depth a concern. This is what we were saying at the trade deadline and it still rings true today. It's still a very good team and they'll turn this around with hopefully a double header sweep today with Bassitt/deGrom going.
Agreed.
Fan frustration is deserved after this performance the last few days against horrific WAS and PIT. I’m not one to blow sunshine when it isn’t warranted either.
For the record, I ain't blowing sunshine, but I certainly ain't throwing in the towel. Maybe it's the firefighter in me that would never drive up to a house on fire and conclude that there is nothing that could be done. At my regular job, we have a saying when we have to achieve a result for a client--play the hand you are dealt, not matter how bad it is. We don't fold easily.

And sorry if I triggered anyone, but posts such as the season is over are absolutely overly dramatic and unwarranted.

I've felt that McNeil has been too far down in the batting order all year. My take has always been that the main importance of where you are in the batting order is how often you get to bat. The closer you are to leadoff, the more you get at bats. The farther, the opposite. McNeil gets hits and gets on base. I'd prefer that he be near the top or the order, not 5 or 6. Or even 4 like today.

2nd and 3rd no outs you expect to get 2 in many instances. Ground ball to the right side you score one and advance another. Then the fly ball nets another run. Strikeout is the worst thing. Team was much better at situational baseball earlier in the season. Putting ball in play for even productive outs etc.

Mets really need to build up their minor league pitching in the next draft. Any word on the return dates for Drew Smith, May and Megill?

Thank you. If the Mets re-sign Jake and invest 45 million per for him and have 43 million tied up in Max, they may need to seriously consider a 6 man rotation for the entire year to keep those guys fresh. Max seems to have worn down at the end of last season and now this setback.

I would estimate that 12-15 of their picks in this year's draft were pitchers.
You... you're good.

13 of the 22 picks were pitchers. One (their third round pick) was unsigned. As a result they will get an extra third round pick next year.

The flip side is that in the first five rounds, they only signed one pitcher - second rounder Blade Tidwell.

Exactly what the doctor ordered. Let Jake shut them down and hope the bats continue to find some rhythm.

Braves go ahead, no help from the As
As expected. The A's, Nats and Pirates are just terrible teams. Like expansion team bad. This second game is just that much bigger. Hopefully the Braves are done in Oakland and moving on to Seattle and San Francisco where they stand a much better chance of losing some games.
