Wack pack is dropping like flies. First Riley Martin. Now Crackhead Bob. He stopped appearing on the show since they never paid him for all of the bits he did with them. The only remaining wack pack member that is funny is Beetlejuice, and he rarely makes appearances any more. The show is a huge bore fest now.

His show is and always has been trash. Complete garbage talk radio. The nostalgia of listening/seeing smut wore off in about a half a show for me.

F that - show was great tip Artie left. He needs someone else on the show. I've also stopped listening - liked Czaban when he was in in the morning.

No, there was more to it than what you deemed smut. There was the tortured man aspect that was entertaining to many. There was the constant battling with bosses, colleagues, the incompetent staff (Scott the Engineer), the ball busting by Jackie, Stuttering John and even Robin of Howard. It was a microcosm of many people's workplace, where the listener could laugh at and identify with the notion that maybe all workplaces are quirky and dysfunctional. Yes, Howard had sprinkling in of smut, but that is not what made the show fun to listen to. I used to turn the show off when he brought in the strippers or porn stars because it was not funny or interesting. What made the show fun was the constant larger than life characters, whether it was Sam Kinnison, Gilbert Gottfried, regular appearances by Bon Jovi in the early years, the wack packers such as Crazy Alice, Elliot Offen or Crackhead Bob, the wars with the in crowd such as Jay Leno, Kathy Lee Gifford and Rosie O'Donnell, and the railing against others in the "in crowd" in Hollywood. His constant busting on Imus was priceless.

Ironically, now, he has become worse than Imus. He lives a strange life that revolves around his wife rescuing abandoned cats, bringing them home and putting them up for adoption. There is no longer a comedian in the Jackie/Artie chair, no busting of chops, no more regular appearances by anybody funny. For some strange reason, Gilbert Gottfried is banned from the show. Cali nailed it--he wanted to fall in with the Hollywood PC crowd, presumably to please his wife, who by every appearance on the show and other shows is a dimwit.

Today's show is a shell of it's former self. And two of the best parts of the show passed away in the last month.

Is there a way to get Sirius and not have his channel thus pay less? I'd do that.

Someone should have sued them a long time ago. He always billed it as commercial free.

i miss segments like the Jesus Twins. That was comedy gold and nowhere else would such a dialogue occur. Now Howard is too established. A lot of truth to the outsider and tortured man role Howard used to embrace.

A lot of this is accurate. His life isn't really that strange. At least compared to other celebrities. What he is willing to say on the show is what has changed. He does the same things every other celebrity does. Same parties, same places, hangs with very famous people...he just doesn't talk about it. He has truly become famous and very wealthy, and his show reflects that.

No clue. If I see it isn't an interview of someone I like I don't listen. Or I'll listen if it is a replay of a classic, like the Jesus Twins.

So what does he do all show now?
Typical show:
1. First half hour -complains about how tired he is and how awesome the show is going to be and how much stuff he has to get to.
2. He will do phony phone calls that are nowhere near as funny as they used to be. it's usually Sal and Richard torturing some public access or religious call in show.
3. He will take phone calls, usually from Bobo or Maryanne from Brooklyn.
4. Celebrity interview, where he fawns over the celebrity, explores if the celebrity has the same Daddy issues as he does, asks how big their house is, how much they are worth and usually inquires about the size of their private parts.
5. Robin does the news.

Shows are from 7-10 a.m. 3 days per week.
There are very few comedic bits. Apparently Benjy Bronk and Shuli are the only writers on the show. The last comedic bit they did was just awful--it was Medicated Pete claiming he contracted AIDS from a monkey. It was cringeworthy.

Some days I leave the show on, but most of the time, I give it 2-5 minutes and switch to music.

Nothing but pictures and videos of cats. It's crazy. OK. So she loves rescuing cats. But there are a lot of other worthy causes to spend time on. Howard used to rail on Imus and his wife for the ranch they sponsored for kids with cancer. Pot meet kettle.

There is a forum/website that still discusses the show, but mainly busts on Howard and reminisces about the good old days. There are some funny and creative (and jaded) people there. I laugh out loud at least 2-3 times per day on this site, kind of like I used to listening to the show.

I started listening to Howard in 1984 when he was on in the afternoons. I literally grew up with the show Does anyone remember his live shows at Club Bene in Sayreville?, the channel 9 show, the Pajama party video, Butt Bongo Fiesta? Back then there was no one doing anything close to what Howard was doing. It was fun, edgy and funny. Now I do not even listen anymore. Howard, Robin, Fred "eric" Norris and Ba Ba Booey have turned old and boring. I never thought I would see the day.

I started listening in the summer of 1984, when he took over Philadelphia and ran Jon DiBella out of town. Remember the Pay Per View show on New Year's Eve? The Channel 9 shows were all on Youtube for a while. Some of the skits they did on that show were really odd. Even the simple ones like him playing Nils Lofgren in basketball and losing were funny. When I moved to North Carolina in 1992, some guy I worked with who had just moved from Tennessee was asking me all kinds of questions about Howard on the radio because he was so intrigued by the Channel 9 TV show, which remarkably was broadcast in North Carolina when Chanel 9 was a super station.

I still listen, but I agree that it's not as good as used to be. They need Artie back, or an Artie replacement.

I read it, but at the end Johnson writes that Howard was convinced by this woman to not re-sign with Sirius, and go to Pandora or some other pay service. But he did re-sign with Sirius. So what else in the article is total garbage? Probably all of it.

It sucks now. The brought in some woman a few years ago who is essentially there to make the show more pc and clean up Howard's "brand". She has the power behind the scenes, which Stern has bought into.

As such, they have taken almost everything out of the show that made it funny. Here is an article on it.

Excellent synopsis and review. I agree with most of your points. Howard now fancies himself as the King of Celebrity Interviewers. He sometimes brings out great information from celebrities, but he also often interrupts their answers just when they are saying something very interesting. He asks way too many questions. Also, I don't even know half the celebrities he is interviewing.

My favorite guest of all time is Gilbert Gottfried. Too bad Howard apparently banned him. Was Gilbert too politically incorrect or did Gilbert disrespect the show by spitting on the walls of the studio? Whatever the reason, the show suffers from the lack of Gilbert's appearances.

As far as the whack packers are concerned, High Pitch Eric, Beetle Juice and Big Foot are still funny. I do find Sour Shoes to by hysterical and extremely talented. His appearances lately are too few and far between.

To make up for the lack of content, the show's writers are contriving feuds among the various guests and callers (Bobo, Ronnie, Sal, King of All Blacks, Benjy, etc). However, the feuds seem way too scripted and redundant. Most of us know they are contrived.

As far as political correctness is concerned, a Big Foot imitator used the word "fag" while in character. Howard almost went to pieces and that imitator was never invited back. Ironically, his show created its audience by equal opportunity busting (e.g, "Out of the Closet Stern"), but it now seems that certain subjects are taboo.

This is the original Howard Stern theme song from back in 1984-85 when he was on in the afternoons on WABC radio. When he moved to WXRK in the mornings he dropped this theme song. But this is the original.

I'm clearly biased here as my wife and I have a cat that they fostered, and my wife talks to Beth on Facebook about every other day, but what's wrong with having a cause that they care so much about? I feel pretty confident saying it isn't the only charity they donate money to.

And it's a bad thing that he has grown up from ripping on a guy for giving some good times to kids with cancer? That's really your complaint?!

Nothing intrinsically wrong with Beth's Animal Shelter platform, but that's not what made the show the success it became. His hardcore audience doesn't give two shits about Beth and her rescue animals. Promoting her platform is boring radio.

No, I think you missed my point. Howard has grown into a huge hypocrite. I am not an Imus fan, but he used to mercilessly rail on Imus and his wife and their ranch for the kids with cancer. I never understood that, other than some petty jealousy and resentment he had towards Imus. It takes a special kind of hubris to do that, and now he is married to a woman who spends a very large part of her day to chasing cats around, photographing them and posting them on Instagram. Maybe if he had not been such a jerk about Imus and his wife, this would not stand out so much.

I think you're also seeing the effect of a couple decades of maturity (even for him) and hundreds of millions of dollars. I guess that's what I have trouble understanding from his fans who are the most frustrated by how he is now. Did you not expect him to change? And if he still claimed to be the same guy, doing the same things, it seems like he would just come across as a massive poser.

It's fine that he changed, but he is also trying to change his history. He has gone as far as editing old shows to remove offensive words. He is a huckster who will do or say anything to get ratings.
What was most revealing about the new unfunny show is when he was interviewing Roger Daltrey about a year or so ago. At the end of the interview, Roger asked, "What happened to the funny?"

Are they really editing the old shows? If true, that is pretty lame.

Part of their reasoning for going to Sirius was that they wouldn't be censored.

Stern became exactly what he used to rail against. He is Imus now.

I was a Howard fan years ago, but grew tired of his schtick. When he had a very good sidekick, Jackie Martlin or Artie Lang, he was good, because the sidekicks weren't just add ons, but were an integral part of the show.

One of the funniest 15 seconds ever was the group talking about having sex with a cat (I believe it was a news story), and someone asked how to do it. Fred Norris, without even hesitating, says "oh you just lift up the tail." There was dead silence for 10 seconds before someone said anything. Again, a long time ago though.

I now have Sirius XM in my car. Tried listening again to him, but never seemed to catch him live and gave up. It just wasn't keeping me entertained. I have been listening to Opie and Jimmy Norton though and am loving it. Norton is hysterical, unbelievably quick etc.

Opie has paid homage to Howard, but Howard always seemed to put down any competitor, calling them copycats, etc.
