OT: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees Announced

Thanks. I checked out the list. It looks like a long time ago they decided that "Rock and Roll" was not a qualifier for entry into that Hall.
Seriously. Those first few years of inductees were like 95% R&B legends. They should have just called it the R&B hall of fame from the beginning. Almost all modern music comes from there anyway. Or maybe just call it the Modern Music hall of fame. I guess Rock and Roll just sounds cooler.

Ironically, to me at least, the idea of a hall of fame is about as far away from Rock as you could get. My sensibilities will always associate Rock with sex, drugs, and ear numbingly loud, hard music. Basically, Almost Famous, haha!

Two of the best O.T. discussions on this board are the ones around MLB and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.
Here's this year's R & R nominees. Make your choices.

Not stirring the pot...
But I have never heard of NY Dolls or Kate Bush. (Never good with band names to begin with, just listened to tunes on the radio in 80s and 90s)

Looked at some NYD songs on YouTube and had never heard any of them. Listened to Kate Bush and I must admit I don't recall ever hearing any of her songs until last week while watching Hand Maids Tale where they played Cloudbusting. I enjoyed it

The Go Go's songs are mostly familiar.

I am 44 as an FYI. So I am not sure who does the voting, but I would have voted for what enjoyed more which would have been Go Go's.

Can't speak to the musical instrument abilities of the New York Dolls and how that should impact the voting. I was just hearing the videos...

I also go by the same thought as I do for sports. If you are a generation or two after their prime and can instantly recognize them by name or songs- they made an impact. Kate Bush and NY Dolls were good but haven’t stood the test of time.

They should rename this the MUSIC HALL OF FAME so that the inevitable THATS NOT ROCK AND ROLL comments will quiet down a little.

To your point,

I googled Todd Rundgren and recognized his songs instantly..

Another sad class for the Rock N Roll Hall of Shame. Even when they get something right, it is usually for the wrong reasons. As there has been a downturn in music, imo these classes will just get worse. It is worse than a popularity contest, This is virtue signaling. At it's finest!

The nominees:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Kate Bush
  • Devo
  • Foo Fighters
  • The Go-Go’s
  • Iron Maiden
  • Jay-Z
  • Chaka Khan
  • Carole King
  • Fela Kuti
  • LL Cool J
  • New York Dolls
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Todd Rundgren
  • Tina Turner
  • Dionne Warwick

I'm trying to figure out what more than half of them have to do with Rock 'N' Roll.
Induct the Go Go’s and call it a day

It’s funny though...YouTube is replete with young kids (a lot of them black) reacting to bands like The Who, Stones, and many others and enjoying what they hear...and saying things like “oh wow no auto tune and they can play instruments”...very interesting. Perhaps there is a modicum of hope.
There are a bunch of those for the late Neil Peart's drum solo on Rush"s 30th Anniversary tour.

Did either ever have a popular hit? I was big into music in the 80s and 90s and the Dolls we're mostly relegated to the punk community but without a break through popular hit. KB at least had one or two songs were popular in the the New Wave world. Which was more mainstream.

The Dolls we're historic for the historians - not so much for the main-er stream music fan.

Kate Bush, hell I don't know why she's in there. I can only think of one song off the top of my head.

Yeah they had musical talent.

Before he was famous himself, Morrisey of The Smith's was president of the NYD fan club.
I don't follow music history much but its curious how NYC was the hub for international sub-genres like punk and glam.

Because it’s NYC.

Kate Bush had a huge impact on female artists and artistry. Huge in England but still influential here but I would probably stop short of inducting her

Eurythmics...most definitely and since both have gone to have huge impact as solo artists. As a group, they ushered in the mtv era and their use of icy synths with incredible vocals was a game changer. Then just when you had them pegged as a new wave synth group they moved into straight ahead rock and roll and then back again to synths at a time when that music was not in the mainstream. Annie Lennox with 2 massive releases, Annie probably one of the best singers ever in the era.. Dave Stewart producing albums for the likes of Petty, Stevie nicks, Mick Jagger and Jon Bon Jovi.

Probably because pre-internet it was the center of western culture. Pre-internet you met in meat space not online.

I read this as if you were Patrick Bateman in "American Psycho." LOL

I think one of the most underrated and under appreciated rock bands that has been overlooked by the R&RHOF is Little Feat. With their eclectic mix of rock, country, blues, jazz fusion , a very unique band. Back in the 1970s, they had the distinction of being the favorite band of both Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers Band.

I enjoy them too.

So let's just say you had to let one in but not the other. Who you picking ? Personally, I'd go Maiden and i like JP more. Just think Maiden surpassed Priest over time.
Loved them both but neither are HOF. Sabbath/ Metallica are the bands to compare to
