Danny Hurley:

- can recruit
- can coach
- will attract local kids
- has the "it" factor that will sway kids
- has RU roots
- has the Hurley pipeline... St Anthony's..
- has Street Cred
- And MOST IMPORTANTLY, Hobbs must have a fondness for him given their SHU ties......

Making things complicated, if we are to pry him - we need to do it after this season - given I'm sure other larger schools will target him.....

Wasn't Danny offered the job before Jordan was hired and asked for a 7 year contract before he would even consider taking the job.I believe I read that somewhere, but can't find proof it's true.

At this point, wouldn't it be worth the risk to hire someone like him on a 7 year contract? Can he coach? Can he bring in decent players and make them better? I'm not familiar enough with what he has done, what kind of players he currently has. I just know that EJ doesn't seem to be doing it. There doesn't seem to be any forward progress at all.

I still remember Rice's first year, he took a team that was in disarray under Hill and made them look like a team. They still weren't all that good, but it was night and day watching them play compared to the previous year.

If we find a decent coach who is willing to come here, we should probably do whatever is required to make it happen...even if it means a 7 year contract.

its a great idea and you pitch it totally with the idea of the facilities being built and as part of a grand plan to finally show investment in basketball.. He is a NJ guy, you have the media all aboard, you get serious about shovels in the ground for a practice facility..you really backload his contract with incentives. This is the type of hire that people can rally around and have some patience with

Danny Hurley is the typical hire that would sound and feel right when it is made, but in the end would be awful.

Jordan---RU knows him..Hurley--we know because he is a NJ guy.

It would not be awful. He is a legit college coach.

I don't think he will come anymore. He will look for a better job now or stay at URI

Seems like 7 year plan under Hurley is not objectionable.
Some said Eddie needed that and now in only the third of those seven years, Jordan is deemed a failure,
Wonder what would be the case if Hurley's rebuild job looked bad his third.

It wouldn't look like this. It just wouldn't.

Recruiting

I have been supporting Eddie and I want him to succeed...but it ain't happening. The offensive coaching is solid but the defensive coaching is startling bad and getting worse

I would really advocate for Danny Hurley

Eddie got the lockeroom reasonable fixed....that was a big job in of itself and the next guy has a shot

And a new coach has pieces to get this thing moving right next year

This program will take 7 years to rebuild as it is.
Wake me up if and when this happens.
Lost all interest.
Can't get up for home games and don't care to watch away games on TV.
I do feel badly for Eddie.
He never had a chance.
As a Rutgers guy he should realize he is not the answer.
He should not hold us hostage with his remaining buyout.

Small time thinking. Bobby is a better coach. Does not take seven years to turn around a basketball program. Run away from him.

If you want a guy who can coach look no further than the guy who just beat us by 34 points!

Does it take EJ 7 years to teach D, hustle, rebounding, FT shooting? Come on now. He's a Loyal Son but he's never been a good HC. I said the hire was bad when it was rumored. Bring in Bobby (I'd prefer him over Danny) & we'd at least play much harder & show some basketball IQ & skills. Plus we'd actually recruit NJ & worst case land some 2nd tier kids that would contribute well. Nonetheless, Hobbs needs to break ground on the basketball/wrestling practice facility ASAP, & then figure out who to massively overpay because no one is coming unless we do. Bobby makes $1.2M with increases to $1.8M in yr 5. Pay him $1.8M next year with increases to $2.2M-$2.5M over 6 or 7 years.

This loyal son stuff is overrated. He's made 3 million since being here. If he walks away of the 2.5 mil on his contract at the end of the year, then I'll praise him.

Leonard23 -- we wouldn't give DANNY $7 million (7 Years). And you're talking about committing $12-14 million. Do I have to say "It ain't gonna happen?"

The thing that may alleviate some of the Danny $$$ problems (BTW-I can't believe we wanted Danny, but said 'no' because he wanted a million more than we're paying EJ for 5 years?) would his 'relationship' with Hobbs. Trust.

If he becomes your coach, I'll hate Rutgers more than any other school and will want you crushed without mercy. You hire a Dukie, you might as well sign your own death warrant with UMD fans =)

Anyways, I do hope you guys get better, I do, Rutgers and Maryland will always be tied together.

Based on the last 20 something years. Whatever they do it probably won't matter. Waters was actually a halfway decent coach and they fired him for Fred Hill Jr. :joy:

Actually Danny was a Pirate, not a Blue Devil .
As far as you hating Rutgers , I really hope you start doing that instead of hoping the RU MBB program gets better.
Because once you start hating RU MBB it will mean your wish was granted about RU getting better and the Scarlet Knights are winning their games against your Terrapins

Rutgers and Maryland will be tied together and hopefully be fighting each other for the top spot in the B1G (in the near future)

Yes, Danny was an asst. at RU for 4 years, 1997-2001. I wouldn't object to Danny being our coach if he could just calm down a bit on the sidelines. We don't need someone to embarrass us again. Danny is an excellent recruiter who has a lot of connections. Maybe he would be a possibility considering Hobbs is supposed to be a friend of his. I know if he ever came to RU that many SHU fans would really be upset.

Has he had embarrassing moments since he became a College HC ?
I'm not sure if Danny can lead RU to the promised land, but don't think he'd embarrass the program because of the way he acts during the games.
Being animated isn't a drawback, as long as you don't cross the line from being aggressive into being unsportsmanlike .
Many HC's antics on the sidelines, at times, look like they are raving mad, but don't cross the line and hurt the team's image.

No basketball program should take 7 years to rebuild since there are so few players on the team. The bottom line is recruiting better players which sounds easy but has been a impossible task at Rutgers. It will take hiring a head coach similar to Stringer who attracks recruits by their resume alone more than identification with Rutgers.

We have a guy who's calm on the sidelines--------that isn't going very well .

Wasn't he accused of spewing racial slurs at Maryland players and picking a fight with Turgeon? He's another ticking time bomb that hasn't even made the tournament or won a regular season conference championship. Much better coaches out there.

Better than getting embarrassed on the court

Don't know about any racial slurs, but Hurley and Turgeon got into it over some remarks Hurley made when game was over and in the handshake line.
Maryland's players didn't say anything about what was said and both coaches
complemented each after it happened from what I read.

Lol...you have your Hurley's confused......Danny played for SHU while Bobby played for Duke...I'm advocating Danny for the HC......

This is my thinking as well. Don't limit the search to just Danny Hurley. I also like Bobby but would want to do a national search.

There are some great young coaches out there. With Hobbs in charge I like our chances of getting a young guy who will rebuild the program.
