Pikiell Knight Hungary

What a bunch of wackos on this board. For years all we heard was “ we will never win because RU won’t spend like it needs to”. Now many of those same negative jokers are complaining about airfare. Miserable people.
I think it’s less about us being bothered with the cost than getting killed over it in the local media. Personally, I don’t care about this trip. You do whatever it takes. And yes, I’m both a donor and a taxpayer.

I don't care about the airfare.
I just care about the AD effectively spending money.
Personally, I would say a trip to watch the #1 recruit is a good expense considering the revenue his time on the banks would garner.

I'm just a "negative joker" regarding the hypocrisy of "the AD doesn't have the money to potentially pay athletes. The AD loses money on athletics already" or "college athletics is supposed to be about amateurism! Paying athletes ruins the college athletics we grew up with. Now that athletes can make money it's professional sports".

I missed the news reports of Bear Bryant flying to Central Europe on recruiting trips.

When I was a little kid, my best friend's father was an Hungarian emigre. Somewhere at my parent's house I'm sure I still have the little Hungarian-English dictionary he gave me. There was a pretty significant Hungarian population in New Brunswick back in the day. I'm really glad to hear they still have the festival, is there still a Hungarian presence in the city?
J&J imported a lot of workers from Hungary. Then when failed revolt happened in the 50’s lots of refugees got housed in Camp Kilmer adding to those already here.

There is no such thing as local media. They have literally no impact and will resort to any negative story to get clicks. Ignore them. They are going away. And besides when was the last time they wrote anything positive about RU. I can’t remember.

Am I naive to think there is a decent percentage of D1 athletes that actually get a degree and an education while playing.
Like Geo, Caleb, Paul, etc. at least at Rutgers most bb players seem to graduate. Obviously might change with 1 and dones, but the millions make up for it.

News report! Bear Bryant is dead. Times have changed.

This is one of you stupider posts, and that’s saying a lot.

The importance of getting the No. 1-ranked player (Harper) in the country is so crucial to Rutgers it really can't be qualified. You can't put a price on it.

Pike and Knight know this. That is why they are going the extra mile (pun intended), doing whatever they can to convince Harper to spend a season on the banks.

Rutgers will be THE topic of conversation in the worlds of high school and college basketball if the nation's top-ranked player chooses RU.

Harper's star continues to rise on a daily basis. Hundreds of people have already shelled out moolah to own Harper's autograph on a basketball card (click link).

Piscataway can be the center of the college basketball universe for a season. Pike and Co. are doing whatever is necessary to make it a reality.

The results on fields and courts are atrocious.

Pat Hobbs’ athletic department loses more money than every athletic department in the history of the United States of America.

Pat has been on the job for years. Huge financial losses plus miserable results on fields and courts.

On the Directors’ Cup, Rutgers finished 130, just below California Baptist and Colgate, schools that do not hit up students for 8 figures of fees to fund athletic department losses.

Let’s go Pat! You can do better than that.

A few seconds ago, new B1G media deal kicked off. Rutgers and Adidas contract expired. Pat, an update?

Wow. That is a humongous commitment by Pike and Brandin. That tournament is in Debrecen, Hungary, about 130 mi east of Budapest.
Just googled. My girlfriends mom lives two and a half hours from there in western Ukraine. She has to fly through Budapest when traveling back home.

This trolling is at an all-time level....LMAO when RU has 3 Top 150 kids in 2024 for hoops committed and a top 40-50 kid in the class of 2023 on campus about to be a key piece of another successful run for hoops.

No one measures the President Cup anywhere on the planet. It comes down to a handful of sports and others which are improving in a ultra-competitive league. Always best to take a 7 to 10 year outlook on things. Check back in 2029-30 & see where RU athletics is then.

Nope, which sends a strong message to Harper.
WTH, Marlon W. is staying in the USA recruiting, he is like...What about me?

Pretty stiff allegations. Back them up with facts, please: “..every department in the history of the United States of America”.

I would assume Pike and Greg are United Global Services Members which comes with many benefits and upgrades.

First class or business it’s probably a $15k trip, maybe more.

It is an interesting guilt trip they’re putting on Dylan. We flew all the way to watch you in Central Europe for a game no one cared about. They don’t even have to say it.

Other than the pay, it seems to me the coaches jobs now really suck.
Yup. It’s hardly about coaching at all. It’s about recruiting more than ever, since players will fly the coop at any moment.

Rutgers athletics made a deficit of $28,837,548 in the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Rutgers ranked dead last of the 96 schools reporting data to the NCAA. This is the largest deficit run by a athletics department since figures became available in 2017-2018, with the possible exception of the Covid year and its fuzzy accounting.

Here are the Directors’ Cup facts. https://nacda.com/documents/2023/6/27/Final22.23Standings.pdf

Let's not lose sight that with all of this NJ taxpayers have been paying for all of this.
I’m with you, but this is where you draw the line? Taxpayers are funding the entire team Dylan is playing for, all travel, room & board, uniforms, and likely several expenses we can’t think of. And this fulfills what essential need that only government can provide (ex. Police, military, courts)?

If you support the existence of a government team, you already lost the taxpayer argument.

I am sure this way is better for the person as they get an education if things don’t work out.

For those who are close to definite and have zero intention of getting an education I wish there was a viable path for them.

To me guys like Dylan Harper or Ace Bailey should not be playing college basketball. They should be able to get drafted out of high school and NBA GMs should be taking the risks and not make Steve Pikiell travel to Hungary begging a kid to come here for 1 year.

An NBA franchise should be paying Ace Bailey 4 years and $10,000,000 to get his rights and have him under contract. NBA draft needs to be 5+ rounds.
You do know there is a way to skip college and go pro straight out of HS, don't you? 2 of the top 5 2023 kids went straight pro and skipped college. The NBA first round was full of kids that didn't play US college bball.

Dylan and ACE and others are going to play 1 year in college because they want to.

its always been about recruiting for teams that want to win championships.

Looks like they shelled out, what, $20?

Looks like France beat the USA in the semifinals.
The highlights of the game.

This, coaching salaries and being in a conference with teams from California kind of takes a lot out of my anti NIL sentiments.

Let's not lose sight that with all of this NJ taxpayers have been paying for all of this.
Along with alot of wasteful bizzare "feel good "programs $$ Murphy has put forth.but that's a whole different topic.

No way they make this trip if they feel they are in great position in the recruitment.

Feeling less positive about the likelihood of closing the deal now, although it’s always been up in the air.

I guess that he has other targets to deal with. Perhaps he was at the NBPA Top 100 Camp on June 28 & 29.

IIRC, it's a quiet period except for the NBPA Top 100 Camp and FIBA. The NBPA Top 100 Camp has ended.

Hit the nail on the head!

Wow, travel budget gone nuts. College sports has become totally insane. And all this for a guy we hope is good enough that he’ll only be around a year. No one outside of the sports cocoon could possibly understand this.
Maybe the trip was on Pike's dime.
