Pikiell Knight Hungary

I don't care about the airfare.
I just care about the AD effectively spending money.
Personally, I would say a trip to watch the #1 recruit is a good expense considering the revenue his time on the banks would garner.

I'm just a "negative joker" regarding the hypocrisy of "the AD doesn't have the money to potentially pay athletes. The AD loses money on athletics already" or "college athletics is supposed to be about amateurism! Paying athletes ruins the college athletics we grew up with. Now that athletes can make money it's professional sports".

I missed the news reports of Bear Bryant flying to Central Europe on recruiting trips.
That whole post does not make any sense.

It’s strange to think it’s a strange take too

@RUsojo
The reason some find your take strange is that no one thinks Dylan's recruitment is over. So going to Europe could reasonably be seen as going the extra mile to maintain a lead or to make up ground. Hard to get a read on this one way or the other

Worst thing about the U19 is our favorite recruiter got sick and didn't make the team or the trip. If Ace was with him, I'd be feeling more confident about the incident of the trip.

Yeah that’s just it you said it - to maintain a lead OR make up ground. All I said was I think it’s the latter - a reasonable possibility. And the guy said it’s a bizzare/strange “take”.

Very bizzare response.

I take it as Pike not taking anything for granted. Regardless of how confident he feels about Dylan choosing Rutgers, this is the number 1 recruit in the 2024 class, of course Pike is gonna go the extra mile(s) here.

Would think this gesture would carry a good bit of weight with both Dylan & his mom.

More friendly faces while in another country far from home

I also think we could be behind. I think it could be Duke.

After watching John Calipari's recruiting pitch to a top 5 player I think he may be Duke bound. Different school, but the pitch applies to both and Duke is probably saying the same thing. The competition in practice going against all 4 and 5 stars every session is what will prepare him best for the NBA. Getting to the next level is what matters here.

This whole thread is amazing. Greg Schiano takes a helicopter to see a 3* recruit playing football at a high school field 20 miles away and no one blinks an eye. Pikes goes all out and travels to Hungary with his top assistant to see his number one target (not to mention the number one player in the country in that class) and this thread becomes about budgets and some feeling the coach is desperate, etc etc.

This is a good thing. This is a head coach going the extra mile to show a recruit some love. If I remember correctly (and @Geo_Baker_1 can correct me if I'm wrong), Pikes used to go watch Geo play soccer to give him some extra love. This is a good thing!

Has anyone actually complained about HC Pike going?

I mean they've complained about cost, assuming we are behind. On Twitter I saw people say it was a waste. I am stunned by the reaction to this. I guess I’m just generally annoyed by this fandoms ability to be critical of EVERYTHING.
Imagine if Pike didn't go, but Duke coaches did...

Pike is courting the #1 player in the country & has a LEGIT shot of landing him. Do whatever it takes that doesn't get you an NCAA violation.

I trust in Pike to do what he feels is the right thing to do

Igen. Ismered Debrecent?

Wow. That is a humongous commitment by Pike and Brandin. That tournament is in Debrecen, Hungary, about 130 mi east of Budapest.
That trip can be made by train (three hours) or car (two hours). I think there are flights, but I couldn't find one scheduled. https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Budapest/Debrecen So it is quite a trip on top of the flight to Budapest.

He’s doing everything he needs to do. No regrets. If Dylan doesn’t come it won’t be any fault of our staff. We’ve all seen this movie before and we always lose out. But there has never been a local kid ranked this high that is this close. Not Tim Thomas, JWill, no one. Got to go all in. If not now, when?

That would’ve been a great sign for RU imo

If that happened we’d have people on here killing Pike for getting caught sleeping while Duke was in Hungary to watch Dylan play.
Kansas went too Hungary as well to try and make up ground. Per Richie they have been on the outside looking in all the while.

Years ago someone calculated that taxpayers support for the entire athletic department is 25 cents a year per person.
That was me. It is now down to 8 cents per person in NJ.

Here is how I come up with that figure:

The total budget for Rutgers New Brunswick (excluding the med/health schools) is $1.7B. NJ State Appropriations is about 12.8% of that. (The state appropriations number does not include restricted funding that can only be used for specific purposes, like research grants, employee fringe benefit support, etc.)

The total budget for Rutgers Athletics is about $110MM. There is no direct funding from the state for Athletics (excluding restricted state funding like fringe benefit support for employees). But Rutgers provided Athletics with $5.8MM in direct institutional support. Because this is unrestricted fund coming from the general university budget, you can assume that 12.8% or $748K is from unrestricted state appropriations. With 9 million people in NJ, that work. out to about 8 cents per person.

The $748K also works out to 0.7% of the Athletics Budget. So if Pike's trip to Hungary cost $15,000, then you can assume that $102 of that came from state support.

(A explanation about why I am excluding restricted state funding: Restricted funds can only be used for the purpose they are restricted to. They can't be allocated to other things like recruiting trips. Also, when people complain about Athletic expenses, I don't think they are objecting to a secretary receiving a state subsidy toward health insurance --- at least no more than they would complain about the same for a secretary in the student affairs office. )

Hol nőttél fel és hol tanultál meg nagyob szépen magyarul irni? Jártál magyar iskolába? Ha igen, hová?
New Brunswick, at St. Lászlo on Plum Street the Magyar kids used to go to the Szécsényi Magyar iskola next door a couple times a week, but we always spoke Hungarian at home, and there was cserkészet too.

This is fuzzy math. From where do you obtain your figures?

Rutgers produces a budget each year that includes a breakdown for New Brunswick campus athletics.

Based on the university's budget, the athletic deficit for the 2022 fiscal year, ended June 30, 2022, is $41.4 million, or $4.50 per resident. In 2023, using laughably optimistic assumptions, the deficit shrinks to $24.7 million, or $2.70 per resident.

Why bother with accounting gymnastics when a budget is published with the athletic department figures? Is your $110 million budget figure for Rutgers athletics revenues or expenses?

Please read page 5 and provide TKR with the source of your numbers.

Ummmm....you know your math is completely wrong, right?

You are contributing the full $41.4m deficient to "taxpayers" to arrive at $4.50 each (based on 9.2m residents).
Taxpayers don't 100% fund Rutgers.
As such, they wouldn't have 100% burden for the deficient.

You should start with Page 1 of your own source.

Thank you for your comment.

According to page 2 of the latest Rutgers budget, NJ taxpayers are funding 19% of the 2022 Rutgers budget and 20% of 2023. These amounts are calculated by adding state appropriations - in other words a transfer from the state's treasury department into Rutgers treasury - and state paid benefits to Rutgers employees. To be conservative, I excluded student aid revenue and grant revenue from the state amount, even though a lot of this revenue comes from the state.

Allocating 19% and 20% of the athletics deficit to state taxpayers results in a state taxpayer subsidy of 84c in 2022 and 54c in 2023. Multiples above the 8c posted earlier, using figures for which I await to see the source.

Do you have comments on Upstream's math?

You are absolutely correct in including fringe benefits. Back when I was in university budgeting, state wanted to transfer the fringe benefit $ into the RU budget. The u always resisted the idea because if they added to our budget and gave us that money directly when they figured budget cuts they could also cut the fringes. If they stayed in the state budget, they couldn’t be part of a cut target. Grants always reimbursed the state for fringes paid to employees funded by the grant.

We must have met somewhere. I lived in New Brunswick on Robinson St, from 1980 to 1991. I taught in the Hungarian Saturday School located at the Hungarian Reformed Church along with Károly Nagy. I knew many people who were members of Cserkészet.
