Politi Nails It - RU Kills Big-Time Football Dream with Greg Schiano Fiasco

giphy.gif

this feels oddly and very sadly appropriate...after so many years of following RU football (and I am by NO means the fan many in here are)...what’s the point...?

where’s that vodka I had put away for the, (I had hoped) celebration?

...hello RU darkness, my old friend...

He's not an idiot and never has been. He is an attention whore, but that's kind of his job. More importantly, based on all the things I've heard, he's right. And are you telling me you don't blame Hobbs at least somewhat for this for not at least knowing what Greg wanted months ago and despite that, still pursuing Greg? Hobbs should've just said Greg wasn't a candidate if he knew he wouldn't agree with Greg's demands for facilities (which are NOT unreasonable compared to the rest of the B1G).

Very lame. Hobbs was expected to be aware of Greg’s facilities demands before meeting with him with Greg Brown in early November?

Your man love for Greg is impressive.

I didn't read it because its NJ.om but Schiano turning down $32M over 8. That's not on the BOG.

The next offer at 18 over 5 will be the BOG's failure.
The article has good info in it, assuming it's accurate. He didn't turn it down over the salary, he turned it down due to the lack of commitment from the school to upgrade to still-below-average facilities. He wanted to make us reasonably competitive, not pad his salary. Imagine wanting a practice facility that doesn't have to be deflated (and therefore unusable) when we get a few inches of snow.

Seeing the initial two media stories that seemed to be issued by each of the competing camps, I needed more information to see which end of the spectrum the actual truth occupied.

I must say that the anecdote about the recruit/transfers in the Politi article sure seems to expose the angle that “Schiano didn’t really want the job” as a complete lie.

No idea whose agenda to believe but that was a bit of a surprising revelation if true, and blows away the "does he have the same fire he did before?" that's been floating around. I wasn't ever really concerned about his energy level because he has an intensity level that few do.

That said both camps are likely trying to spin this against the other. To that end, I wouldn't put it past Politi to be petty and want to burn Hobbs for comments at his SL colleague over the softball program issue.

Love this part. If true and have no reason for doubt it isn’t, this is why he should have been hired. He knew what needed to be done. Instead RU just wants a bunch of yes men.

Schiano, according to multiple sources familiar with the Nov. 5 meeting between the two sides, came armed with a scouting report of the current roster that stunned people in the room and a list of more than 100 potential targets in the transfer portal to jumpstart the rebuild. He had already started recruiting, behind the scenes, to salvage a 2020 class that looks like a hopeless cause now.

Holy ****. If true Greg was ready to take the job, overhaul the program, and win. What a joke Rutgers is.

this is true as well as targets for staff and program for jucos

rest is nonsense by his agent or one particular bog member, or both, who was behind the hire at all costs. terrible article but the face saving 'it's in the bank' crowd need to latch on to something

I was told 2 weeks ago that Greg was already working the portal and recruits. Politi is spot on.

Poor Politi. He is just pissed that he has to throw away his article about Rutgers wasting NJ Taxpayers money on football.

Ha! Was thinking the same thing. He would have put this out a week after GS was hired. Can't believe anyone listens to this clown.

It's called due diligence, dickhead. I've been part of major negotiations in real life and you simply don't go into the formal negotiations without knowing 90% of what the other side wants before going that far. If you don't think they knew Greg would want new facilities, you're clueless. And I'm sure we're looking at 2nd tier folks now, because any of the top tier folks would've also wanted what Greg wanted, and the 2nd tier guys will be happy with $2MM/year and a shot at being a P5 head coach. Like Ash or Flood.

Sounds like the kind of thing someone who's "all in" would do. Hobbs is an insecure, petulant clown who needs to go. As AD you do what's best for the school, not your own ego.

Ok, that's upsetting. He obviously was all in, and had a plan. Surprised that interview didn't blow people away then.

When I first heard the news I didn't blame RU, but now I'm not so sure.

Why do people always take the bait with Politi? The SL would have done a hit piece involving money no matter what happened.

that would have been a reasonable Politi article but he is slamming RU for not spending money it still doesn’t have on facilities with no rational process.
Facilities should not have been driven by a personal hire. That’s Hobbs job. It will happen when it makes sense.

I just find it a TAD ironic that so many here are jumping on the Politi bandwagon here INCLUDING quite a few who have BASHED him in the past for “slanted” articles.

Too see so much high school level drama from so many on this board is laughable. If you actually read through the opinion aspects of the article you may finally see that SCHIANO may actually not have been as all in as needed given reasonable bounds on his demands. Anyhow, continue with your own narratives.

no Greg is at fault here. He became fixated on timing of facilities as they related to other commitments. He was never considered bright but it's on full display here as he literally couldn't see the trees in the forest. Also, his ask really was too much and didn't sit well with some on the BOG so the more the demands, the less his was heard so to speak. Not everyone wants to spend guaranteeing the guy the 3rd most guaranteed money in the b10 for an avg coach.

there is also the fact that he clearly hasn't changed his micromanaging and bully ways.

How can any Rutgers football fan read that article and not be completely furious? The guy had a plan to fix this mess and Hobbs blew it. You think Butch showed up to his meeting with a scouting report of our roster and 100 names to target through the portal? Hell no. It would take a small miracle to make this program relevant again and some morons on this board want to bash Schiano for asking for "too much". Well congrats you guys got what you asked for. Good luck walking around Shi Stadium with your heads down while Penn St, Michigan, etc. fans walk by you laughing their asses off and looking down at you.

Today, the “leaders” of Rutgers have told Rutgers fans and donors to drop dead. They have told the whole world they don’t care at all about being in the Big Ten. They don’t care about the current and future Rutgers student athletes.

No sir, only 2 Big Ten coaches guaranteed over 32 million.
How many times are you going to repeat the lie? I already corrected you that 25mill was guaranteed and you made a dumb remark. An hour later you are back repeating the same lie even after you learned that 25 mill was guaranteed. What does that say about you?
