Pisses me off that RU never invested enough in football to give these guys a big time venue to stay home. Small time thinking is what NJ is best at.

That being said, I think Ash will get Rutgers to be an average B1G team, better than the likes of Maryland and Iowa. However, to get the top recruits, we need donations to skyrocket and our fanbase to start selling out the stadium on a regular basis.

You have to remember 2 things. 1. Rutgers is never going to sell out 100K+ every game like OSU, Mich, Penn st etc. 2. Rutgers is never going to be the #1 game in town. NJ is a pro sports town and Rutgers could win the BIG and the front page of the Bergen Record or Star Ledge would still be about the Giants, Jets or Eagles.

Stop making excuses. This is the mindset that gets us thinking we're not worthy.

The consensus has always been that if RU got 50% of the top 25 NJ recruits every year......that's enough talent for a winning record every year, even in the toughest division in the game.

Hey Sam ...
You're gonna call out Rutgers ?! Every school we are up against has an endowment unbelievably larger than ours. I don't know how much you contribute to our endowment but it is very important to look at our fan base. We are just as much to blame.

Number 2 is just not true. This area likes a winner.

Announcers on ESPN noted how Iowa kids want to stay home and play for Iowa. That is state pride.
Kids in Iowa grow up with Iowa football being the only big time sport in town thus being huge fans.

How many kids with no ties to Rutgers besides being in NJ honestly grow up Rutgers fans? (I don't know as I'm not from the region but I'm assuming it's not much compared to big time programs and/or regions with no pro sports).

Lots of schools have endowments similar to or smaller than us. It doesn't stop them from fielding good teams. Look up Alabama. Or Louisville. Or Houston. Or the majority of schools in the South.

Yes but to blame the school first is silly. Every dollar we spend is so scrutinized. Blame the politicians, blame the media, blame the millions of alums... How much more should the university spend?

EXACTLY. I grew up ONE TOWN OVER from College Avenue. One town. And I was very rare for being a Rutgers fan and often was made fun of for it by fans of bigger-time teams. Now this was 1979-1983, when we were in the infancy of growing the program and didn't have a decent stadium, but still. My parents didn't go to Rutgers, I had no relatives who went to Rutgers, but I was a Jersey guy. (NOT New York or Philadelphia, as I never have rooted for a "New York" team except in preference over another New York team.) I was a Nets fan and a Devils fan as soon as those teams arrived, rooted for Rutgers and had to "find" baseball and football teams to root for, the same ones I still root for. But I was rare. I practically could walk to Old Queens and yet hardly anyone in my high school was a Rutgers fan. And while that's a long time ago, my peers' kids grew up without a positive impression of Rutgers from their parents, and those kids are probably mostly around college age now.

Please stop with the state pride. Most of you can't wait to retire and move out of this state.
I never could understand the whole retire, and move out of the state. Spend your life raising your kids, going to every event in their lives, watch them grow , marry and have kids, then move out of state? Not this guy, never.

That's what I thought.. It's not state pride for Iowa kids to stay and play for Iowa. It's "holy sh*t I love Iowa football and I can play for Iowa!" It might take 2 decades of Big Ten football and people actually caring about Rutgers in the region with no ties to the school other than being from NJ for those kids to grow up watching/liking Rutgers and ultimately wanting to play there.

I don't see any reason kids like Gary, Peppers, etc. would have grown up Rutgers fans with dreams of playing at Rutgers while they were "small time" middle of the pack in the Big East.. They probably spent Saturday's watching the "big games" and had no one around them watching Rutgers either.

Winning changes all that. Our history is not vey impressive so most HS kids weren't following RU. Start winning more than losing on a regular basis and they will become fans and come to ru. Regardless there will always be kids who want to get out of NJ just like there are kids who want to get out of FL or other states that come to RU. I'm not sure why I even need to tell the OP this as its common sense and been discussed ad nauseum

End of discussion

You don't understand moving to a state with no state income tax and substantially lower housing costs when you are on a fixed income? Come on.

I'm a huge Jersey girl. I love the state, i grew up here, went to Rutgers (and Seton Hall), married here. I love Rutgers, my daughter loves Rutgers and she and her BFF (who are 7) are planning to live together in the dorms their freshman year.

But like hell will I live here when I'm retired. I'll come back up to visit and maybe have a summer home here if I can afford it, but I'm getting out when/if I retire.

Fwiw, my friends and I who graduated RU in the early 2000s and had no football pride while in school became massive supporters when things turned around in 2005, and we continue to do so and instill that school pride in our kids. It may take a generation to see benefits, but I think the state pride amongst alumni children is here. I see tons of kids in RU gear- that definitely wasn't the case when I was a kid and probably wasn't before 2005-2006.

This state loves a winner. Win and we will be competitive with Ohio State in the state pride category.

Also there are a lot of young RU alumni at my office (major corporation), who all recently graduated. They all talk football and rock the block R. I know this is all ancedotal, but the current grads are much more into RU than generations past. This will have an impact on future generations.

So seniors don't leave the state predominantly because of taxes?
I feel like this is a circular conversation. We both agreed that a lot NJ people openly discuss their desire to leave the state due to high taxes/weather. My point is that those feelings are passed down to the kids. That's why kids don't have state pride.

The ones that plan to move are extremely vocal. There's a lot of old people living in NJ. When I moved back to NJ, after living outside of NJ for 20 years, I was surprised by the overall demographics meaning so many old people in NJ.

Even Mr Screw can't move out, even with his negative comments, because his wife doesn't want to go.

You forgot #3: Rutgers will never get to a bowl game. Oh wait...
