RU Commits & HS Season Discussion Thread

I think Kanniard got the W by forfeit...that is what bracket says
Must have changed it. It said he lost earlier. He’ll wrestle for 3rd.

Harrison gets the NC because he’s wrestled 6 matches today which is the NCAA limit. He’ll take a NC again next round so depending on who he faces, he’ll either take 6th place or split 5th/6th. One of the guys he could match up against will also have wrestled 6 matches.

4 placers....decent tourney
Kanniard showed some flashes.
Harrison wrestled tough and won a few in SV

Malcom was Malcom (Not a knock, but performed as he has since being at RU)
Metzlars was Metzlars (I know he will be a RS Junior next year, does he complete his degree and transfer as a senior)
Britton looked small for 141
Gapas was Gapas
A little disappointed in Benner's performace..Didn't he initially beat Angelo at 149 in wrestleoffs?

Hope RU's 157 pounder Vulkah is healed for next season.

O Neil and Poz will give us some depth at heavier weights, hopefully they can RS
Would like to see Turley RS...I had very high hopes for him before the season.

(I expect Grello to handle 174 next season)

Kanniard takes 3rd with a dominant performance 15-3

Harrison and his opponent split 5th and 6th as both guys hit the match limit.

Not a bad tournament. Would like to see more out of Robinson but everything else was pretty much as expected. Kanniard and Harrison both looked great all day.

Let's be honest. Kanniard had one tough match and was dominated by Ramierz who has had a mediocre year. Not a great day for our guys. Wonder if it related to skipping so many opens this year. Britton showed some potential.

You're being a little dramatic...Rameriz is something like 24-6 on the year, that's hardly mediocre and he beat Rob 7-4 in his first tournament at 165. I wouldn't call that dominating.

If Rutgers continues to get shut out of recruiting Delbarton, like Blair, then it really doesn't help our program in any way to have these super HS teams.
We’ve had a tough time cracking the Blair pipeline. We’ve have had more success with the BC contingent the last few years. If you’re a high school kid and you have the opportunity to ago ivy or one of the other top wrestling/academic schools in the country is that really the fault of the public/private participation population? I agree though, ideally we’d like to attract more Blair kids.

Ramirez was a top #10 overall recruit, the 1-seed in his weight class and Kanniard was the only person to give him a scare all day. In his first matches at 165 no less.

He took 3rd place despite not getting a great seed and would probably have taken 2nd if on the other side of the bracket.

I'm very high on Kanniard he continued his attacking style even in his first matches at 165. He's very good at finishing his shots as he doesn't stop once he gets a leg but continues working. That style wins matches and gets you on the podium. We have too many counter wrestlers that aren't very aggressive, that culture needs to change.

We can't compete with the Ivy schools or the Stanfords, but we should be able to recruit against the UNCs. NC State, Virginia Tech, schools that have emerged nationally in the past few years. We can aspire to be a program that recruits nationally, like Nebraska or Minnesota. We are in the BIg Ten, the NJ state university in one of the top talent producing states. I hope our Athletic department will give Goodale all the support and resources he needs to start recruiting nationally, on a wider scale than he has heretofore accomplished.

And that means season ticket holders like me should join the SKWC. So, I certainly will this year. I just wish we didn't have to share any training resources with Princeton.

I’ve said this before but part of the New Jersey and Rutgers culture is being extremely proud of itself. A team full of kids from Cali, PA, Ohio, etc. just doesn’t seem right, whether that’s for the best or not.

That said, if Blair, Delby, BC, etc. all starting becoming more opening minded to Rutgers instead of Princeton, we could still compete with the elite schools with all home grown talent. BC is trending in the right direction with us. Hopefully Alvarez’s season opens some doors at St Joes. Would be nice to land a kid like Almeyda or Casale to pave the way for Delbarton and hopefully Van Ness can connect us better to Blair.

Has Rutgers made any inroads with Cosgrove of Camden Catholic? Winston used to be an assistant there, but is not listed any more as an official assistant, so that link to Rutgers doesn't exist anymore. I think he has a shot at becoming a multi-time state champ

He’s my pick to win 195 this year. Beat Epperly earlier in the season at the Sam Cali I think.

I know RU coaches paid Camden Catholic a visit a few weeks ago (Cosgrove's HS). Kid is only a Sophomore so can't "officially" recruit the kid but you can stop by and say hi to the coaches. Wink Wink.

Staff is recruiting Cosgrove and knows the CC staff well.

Cangro, Bouzakis, Crookham, and Casale are also all realistic targets.

I just don't see Crookham or Bouzakis ending up here. They will be #1/#2 P4P in the class and I don't see us pulling a more than likely 4x state champ out PA. I'm hearing he's high on Lehigh but PSU wouldn't surprise me either. Bouzakis will be recruited by everyone, he's not from the NE, nor have we've gotten anyone from Wyoming Seminary (that I'm aware of)..doesn't seem to favor us.

Cangro and Casale are definitely possibilities but Delbarton hasn't been too friendly to us in the past so it's hard to get excited about the possibility. Don't know too much about Cangro but he's probably the most likely of the bunch.

May not seem right but building a fence around NJ and getting every top recruit the state has to offer every year isn’t going to happen, as much as we’d all like it to. The best programs in college recruit nationally. We have to as well.

I agree that we will not get every top recruit in state, especially when it comes to Blair and Delbarton type kids, but the majority of our class should come from NJ and there should always be guys from PA and around the country to fill in the gaps. We need to be a national brand and sometimes our reputation is considerably better in other states than within some pockets/circles within our own state.

Seeds for the NJ State Championship are being released and can be found here:

https://www.nj.com/highschoolsports...nj-wrestling-state-championships-meeting.html

RU Commits:
Oliveri - #1 @ 132
Clark - #1 @ 145
Weaver - #1 @ 152
O'Neill - #2 @ 170
Poz - #1 @ 182
Epperly - #5 @ 195

- Great seeds for our guys, especially Weaver. I was expecting him to be a #3 seed but that puts him in a great position as he won't have to see Mooney or Strashinsky until the finals.

- Epperly gets a potential quarterfinal rubber match vs. #4 Szuba, as they split their 2 match-ups this year already.

- Everything else was pretty much as expected.

- Tough draw for Damian Weaver (#30) as he will face Anthony Clark (#3) in the 1st round

Seeing the brackets now. My picks:

106 - 2-Santaniello over 5-Vasquez
113 - 2-Klinsky over 1-Dunnigan
120 - 1-Peterson over 6-Santaniello
126 - 1-Ventresca over 3-Howard
132 - 1-Olivieri over 2-Cedeno
138 - 3-Clark over 2-Cetta
145 - 1-Clark over 6-Troczynski
152 - 4-Boggiano over 3-Strashinsky
160 - 3-Soldano over 2-Benedetti
170- 2-O’Neil over 1-Reitsma
182 - 1-Poz over 2-Rada
195 - 3-Cosgrove over 1-Chakonis
220 - 1-Jacob over 2-Casale
HWT - 1-Gashi over 2-Estevez

Cangro, Bouzakis, Crookham, and Casale are also all realistic targets.

While he's not from NE, his dad is and his younger brother and sister will be up here at Sem

Oliveri gets us started and wins by fall in 5:34.

Was up 15-3 before the pin... refs let his opponent do absolutely nothing in the 1st and 2nd when he was on bottom, so he couldn't get him turned.

That's a fine line. Wrestling defensive to avoid backs or stalling...

Andy Clark wins by TF (18-3) in his opening round match.

What are you guys using to see who is wrestling on what mat? I am not a fan of the NJ.com sports stream as it does not list names or scores.

I think biggest upset of the day so far is Eddie Hummel the 7 going down. Pretty sure he was undefeated and was ranked in the top 2 or 3 in the state in a lot of places.

Southern always finds a way to land state caliber transfers. Always found that kind of strange.

4 seed at 170 Jacob Rodriguez goes down by 1st period pin. Hard to see the finals being anything but O’Neil and Reitsma
