RU Commits & HS Season Discussion Thread

Interesting 2nd round matchup at 120 as potential RU recruit Vin Santaniello faces Joey Lamparelli. I think both guys are podium guys this year, but Lamparelli was upset in the region finals so these guys have to face each other earlier than they probably should.

Additionally there’s a couple interesting matchups at 126. Top seed Ventresca is favored against 16 seed Neiko Malone but Malone has wrestled great this year and I believe he’s knocked off some top guys along the way.

Also, Alex Almeyda who was an early season pick to win the 120 bracket gets a tough matchup against Thomas O’Keefe. Wouldn’t be shocked if Almeyda gets upset here.

At 132 we get Waller vs Zimmerman part 3. They split this year, each guy winning by pin fall I believe. Top seed Perez-Eli beat Waller, Waller beat Zimmerman, and Zimmerman beat Perez-Eli.

Epperly wins by injury default. He got a takedown and then his opponent couldn't continue.

I really feel for that kid. He tore his ACL and meniscus like 3 months ago and has fought through it. His coach said if he’s healthy this year he’s a podium guy.

A bunch of top guys at 182, like #2 Luke Rada and #4 Joe Colon squeaked by their 1st round opponents. Rada won 12-9 and Colon won 3-2.

Ugh, that's rough.

Rada is a tad overrated but I still think he takes 2nd because it’s not a very deep weight class. He was wrestling like 3 or 4 weight classes down last year. Really big jump but he’s handled it well this year.

It’s heavyweight so a little less surprising but 2-seed Estevez needed UTB to win

5-seed at 106 Vazquez who I believe was #2 in the nation earlier this year loses in the 2nd round.

Santaniello survives 2-1

Olivieri wins his 2nd round matchup by MD (16-5). Controlled the match from start to finish. He is very good defensively.

Almeyda controls the match and wins 7-0

Zimmerman beats Waller and faces top seed and returning state runner up Perez-Eli tomorrow. Zimmerman pinned Perez-Eli earlier this year in a crazy cradle from a scramble.

O`Neill wins by MD (12-1). His opponent did absolutely nothing and gave up 2 penalty points for stalling.

Clark wins 3-0
I’m not watching so I’m not sure if it was a dominant or disappoint 3-0 but his next round opponent Max Brignola is legit.

Also for what it’s worth, a while back I posted here somewhere that there’s a shore conference middleweight who may wrestle for RU for little to no scholarship money. He has a decent chance to reach the podium this year and he’d be a depth guy here obviously. Still rather not say who it is, though it may not be too hard to figure out, but I’ll say he has won both of his matches today and is in the quarterfinals.

Eh, tough to really make anything of it. He took what Barrett gave him, so I wouldn't say it was disappointing, but there was never even a chance that Clark was losing the match so it was closer to dominating than anything but you would have liked to see a little more offense from him in the 1st.

In the 1st there little to no action...they just kind of fought each other off I'm not sure if anyone took a shot.

In the 2nd, Barrett picked bottom. Clark rode him tough and picked up 3 back points along the way. He never even got remotely close to escaping.

In the 3rd, Clark picked top. He once again rode him super tough the entire period. Barrett could barely get off the mat. Clark seemed super content on just riding him out and advancing.

Wrestleback #2 is just finish up and championship 3rd round is beginning now. Winners secure a place on the podium.

Looking like Santaniello vs Tallmadge in the semi finals at 106. Both are top 5 in the country.

I don’t expect Poz to struggle because he’s such a beast, but Clayton in the quarters is a very good 8 seed.

Older Santaniello wins 3-2 in double OT. Faces Babin in the semi’s with the winner facing likely Dean Peterson for the state title though Kayal has a shot. Real strong weight class.

Robby Howard beats Almeyda and faces Nardone in the semis. Nardone beat Howard earlier this year.

Olivieri wins 9-5 over Conklin (TRE) to advance to the semi-finals. He started out with a great 5 point move in the 1st few seconds.

Olivieri survives a slight scare and wins 9-5.

I wouldn't call it scare.. he got taken down once when he was caught off balance but once he escaped at the end of the period he was never not in control of the match.

Now Clark actually avoids a scare and wins 4-3 over Max Brignola (Rumson) to advance to the semi-finals

What was the scare as the stats show he seemed to lead and control from the start? Thanks
Takedown late second to make it 5-4 Olivieri. Late escape and choice gave him a 7-4 lead early 3rd. Match wasn’t ever in doubt but closer than expected

Anthony Clark also nearly taken down at buzzer but hangs on to survive as well

Weaver cruises into the semi-finals with a 9-4 win over Michael McGhee (Shore Regional).

He will face Nick Boggiano (TRN) next round.

O'Neill dominates and gets the 10-0 MD over Colin Loughney (West Morris Central) to advance to the semi-finals.

He will face Noah Fox (Montville) once again who he beat in district and region finals by fall and MD (16-5) respectively.

Poz wins by fall (2:14) in the 2nd. He beat Blake Clayton (St. John Vianney) to advance to the semi-finals.

Dominated from start to finish.

The other 182 quarters were all super competitive. No one near Poz level.
