RU vs Maryland Football/Wrestling Doubleheader @ Yankee Stadium

It is what it is........ not great for people who prefer/expected/wanted to have the game at HPSS. But, a deal is a deal - and it's not like the AD or head coach had a lot of leeway on a deal that was made before they got to RU

That said, the wresting tie-in is interesting and is getting a lot more positive press than I would have expected - and that will likely become even more positive as game week approaches next year...

End of B1G season games with UMD (and/or state penn) are good for the program -- something like this will only add to the developing history/excitement about this growing rivalry.....

There are worse problems to worry about..........

I'm pulling this out of my nether regions, but consider for a moment the admittedly unlikely scenario where both Rutgers and Maryland football are ranked teams going into this match up. What impact do you see on the television audience with the game in the Bronx rather than in Piscataway?

Absolutely no impact.

Except for games played in truly unique venues (which Yankee Stadium is not), television audiences don't really care where a game is played. If Rutgers and Maryland are ranked, they are tuning in to watch 2 ranked teams play. No one is going to say that they weren't planning to watch the game if it were in Piscataway or College Park, but will watch it because it is at Yankee Stadium.

Yankee stadium............uuuugggghhhhh If there is any talk about rivalry between us and Maryland there is no better place to play the game then your own stadium! I could see 1 or 2 years where we play them at MetLife and they us at M&T Bank but not Yankee Stadium. Very disappointing.

Maybe someone has already said this in the thread but I'll say it anyway - If they had a series where Rutgers always hosted Maryland in the Bronx and Terps always hosted RU in Baltimore.....on a particular weekend annually so that alumni can plan daytrips around it......(thanksgiving weekend) this could be very cool. The Ravens schedule might affect it, but you'd have a whole weekend to work with. Friday and Saturday, at least.
To makes your idea apples to apples the game would have to be at Camden Yards where the Orioles play.

The Old AD signed this contract. So in order to make the best of it, we added wrestling. Wrestling at Yankee Stadium is getting attention nationally since it has never been done before. Hopefully this will also attract even more top wrestlers to commit to Rutgers.

After this game, unless it is a bowl game we should never play football there again, IMHO.

And maybe we will both be undefeated, in the top 5 and playing for the championship of our half of the B1G..........Then it would really, really, really suck that we gave up our home field advantage

PSU did not give up a home game. Your opponents did which was stupid of them IMO

But yes, these teams are giving away home games. A neutral site game = 1 less home game!!! It's not a hard concept to grasp. And I agree..these teams are making a hell of a lot more than Rutger is here. We aren't at their level yet.[/QUOTE]
How does a neutral site game not equal = 1 away game instead? At the very most it equals 1/2 home game. So yeah, it's not a hard concept, but you don't seem to have a grasp of it.

Exactly. Wrestling is our best sport and most popular after football... It's getting unprecedented publicity. Publicity that could lead to the team joining the ranks of Iowa, PSU, Oklahoma State as the elite teams.

It equals one home game to one team, one away game to the other. The next year, (OU/Texas, UGA/Florida), it's an away game for the other team, and home game for team that was away last year.

This whole convo is silly. Sorry for starting it.

Let's agree the deal should never have been made in the first place..no matter what other teams do.

Neutral site is neutral site. Not a home game or away game for either team. Not sure why you are having difficulty with that concept.

I get that concept. But like I've been saying..if it weren't a neutral site game, one team would be home, the other would be away. Hence, one team is giving away a home game to have a neutral site game. The other team is doing the same the next year.

I guess we aren't agreeing on what "giving away a home game" means.

In most of the examples you originally gave they were not conference games, thus not necessarily a situation where one team was giving up a home game. They could both have been giving up an away game (still 7 games at their stadium, 4 away and 1 neutral). Only for conference games is it necessarily true that one is giving up a home game, though they might be depending upon how the deal is structured.

Now you might say, 'but they could have had that game at home instead, so they are giving one up.' But that isn't always true, often the venue being neutral is part of the deal and benefits both teams as they both get to give up an away game in order to play somewhere in the middle and split the proceeds.

Agree...

I think the original argument shouldn't have been "Big time programs don't give up home games"

Instead, should have been "Big time programs don't play home games off campus". I'd agree with this statement most of the time, and I think that's what most are arguing.

Guys...

This isn't going to be a regular thing and while I'm not happy about it...

It is ONE time...only after we have in the league for FOUR YEARS

Time to shut up, Man up...and get our asses to the Bronx for this one.

It will be our 4th time. No other B1G schools are giving up a home game. It is awful on so many levels.

I love wrestling but Ru only has about 1,000 season tickets sold and that's a high. Most matches , other than Penn St or Iowa , only draw about 1-2,000. I think BB is a bigger revenue producer. Even women's.
This years Princeton Match at the Stadium w a nice gate , will help for sure.

If Julie's plan was to figure out a way to get fans from Maryland and DC up to New York for a weekend to spend money on lodgings and food in NYC and see their Terps play in a baseball stadium, she succeeded wildly. I am sure the NYC Chamber of Commerce will give her an award. As to how this game benefits RU and RU fans I am still trying to decypher that part of the equation.

So if we make enemies can we get rid of the awful bowl game too? Win-win!

Wrestling outdoors in November in NYC? Pretty risky as too many scenarios could make it too dangerous for the wrestlers.

Iowa fan here. I was at the Grapple on the Gridiron last fall in Iowa city we're number 1 Oklahoma State wrestling number 2 Iowa outdoors at kinnick stadium at noon followed by a 7 p.m. night game vs. One of our better rivals, Minnesota.

I have to say that was fairly easily the best sporting event day I've ever been to. We had 50,000 fans at the wrestling meet and 70000 at the football game and it was crazy. I mean absolutely crazy.

We were very fortunate though that the weather was perfect that day. Everything fell in line just right to make this a huge success.

This will be interesting to see but I have a bad Vibe about this

asked and answered. fair enough.

How on earth will this football game at Yankee Stadium benefit Rutgers Football?

How does this build better relationships for Athletic Development with donors?

This game at YS is a mistake.

If this is truly forced upon us as a home game we are forced to pay for, I will seriously think about skip being a season ticket holder for one year, maybe more. And I've seen almost every home game since 1971.

It's not like it will be hard to pick up a new season at the same location. Plus we now skip buying the parking, we park on Riverview for 20 bucks.
Lighten up Bro. I'm becoming increasingly worried about your increasing negativity. Never thought I'd see it. :flushed:

Now you're talkin. I would consider flying in from the West Coast for that package.

Apparently there is talk of it happening for Penn State but I don't now who the opponent would be. Rutgers is the obvious choice but the schedule would have to have us playing football in early to mid November. The two teams that would make the most sense are probably Iowa or OSU but I can't see either of those happening.

Most of these posts relate to the stupidity of having the football game there.
Thanks Julie.
But wrestling outside in November and seats that are how far from the mat?
Why is this appealing? Trying to put lipstick on a pig.

You have to remember that this is a very new concept and RU is at the front of it after seeing it being done very successfully between Iowa and Okie State last season. I know there aren't a ton of wrestling fans on here but I would venture a guess that a lot of wrestling fans from other big time programs are saying, "man, why don't we do that?"

Your wrestling program is already relevant and I think this is really going to be something that kids take notice of. Keep in mind that you are in a fantastic location for wrestling recruiting and programs can't take very many kids each year. I see this as a huge opportunity for RU wrestling and bet you will see some results from it in recruiting.
