RU vs Maryland Football/Wrestling Doubleheader @ Yankee Stadium

When this came to light a few months back, 80+% on NJ.com voted that they would not attend the game.

Rutgers isn't stupid.

They know this.

The only way they can make this work is to force season ticket holders into buying seats to a game that 80+% do not want to go to.

Then what is it?

One thing I'm seeing ITT that is surprising is people complaining about extra travel time. I guess I'm just used to always driving 2 1/2 to 4 hours to see Penn State play.

I've been to both Happy Valley & official replica Yankee Stadium for football games. Happy Valley was a great experience, even though it was raining & we got our brains beaten in. True story about Yankee Stadium that many on here will verify: security called the cops to throw out fans for STANDING during the game.

lol @ season ticket holders... i'll just be watching on tv as usual.. ya know.. where i can grab a smoke at halftime.. no bathroom lines.. food that i like... beer of my choice.. no whiny people/kids around me... ahhh the life!!!!!!

Personally, I don't have strong feelings for or against this. For what it is worth, from a pure marketing perspective, this announcement is a story both regionally and, to some degree, nationally. It appeared on Yahoo sports and in the Sporting News, among other places. I would think that has to be a positive with both football and wrestling recruits.

yikes

Carton just announced on the fan that it'll be next year November 4th.

I'm sure this will go over well on the board:popcorn:

I like this format of having a wrestling match before the football game. I also do not mind one game a year in Yankee stadium. Part of reason we even were invited into the B1G is because of our proximity to NYC and Philly. Bitch and moan all you want about not wanting have a home game in Yankee stadium but RU's long term association with the Yankees can only help our programs. The only issue I have is are we allowed to leave the stadium to tailgate in between the wrestling and football? This also applies to wrestling held at Rutgers Stadium.

Im sure you are. Two separate tickets, I think. Don't have to go to both.

I like the idea. Something different. Might not even go to the wrestling part, just to The Dug Out. Hell chance to see your team play in the greatest city in the world. Not many get to do that.

Then why do the Pro teams not play there?

This stinks of Kyle Flood and Julie Hermann. Especially Flood.

The B1G had nothing to do with this either, Delaney made it clear from the beginning we would never have to give up a home game if we didn't want to.

Absolutely. And Hobbs heard the complaints, so he added wrestling to make it an "event". Bravo to Hobbs on this.

Yankees Stadium has hosted all sorts of events. Lots of history in the old stadium.

Yes, i agree..this isn't the old stadium.

Exactly. Its not iconic Yankee Stadium any more. Has all the charm of an airport terminal. All the more reason not to play there. Its not Fenway or Wrigley.

That's fine to think that way. Not arguing about that.

Was just responding to your "why don't pro teams play there" post from u up the thread.

Yankee Stadium is 15 minutes away for me. Piscataway is an hour and 10 minutes. I make it to Rutgers no matter what. I'm sure Yankee Stadium isn't the horrible obstacle people are making it out to be.
Awesome. Let me know how many of my tix you need for your Fort Lee neighbors, since I won't be needing them. It's a bit longer than an hour ten for me & official replica Yankee Stadium holds absolutely no significance to me.

Whatever u do, please sell/give to RU fans at least.

1. I am a positive person, support RU and do not complain. Many Long time season ticket holders with good seats at RU got end zone or corner seats at the Giants-Jets stadium game 5 years ago. The seats were bad.

2. Now, in a smaller stadium, designed for baseball with way less decent seats, there is no way we get good seats.

3. Let's make our on-campus stadium the place to be on fall Saturdays.

4. Let's not give up our home field advantage...ever.

5. I will be really pissed if they make me buy these seats, and then they will go on stub hub and I will miss the first home game in 12 years.

6. It never is good business to piss off your best clients.

Not a Rutgers guy -- but I think "travel time" is shorthand for the hassles of traveling across a river into one of the biggest cities in the world (and into the Bronx, which ain't exactly Manhattan).

If given the choice between a two hour ride in Central Pennsylvania and negotiating crowded roads, bridges and tunnels in NYC, I'd choose the former every time...

1) do you think there will be a market for these tix?
2) isn't the objective of giving up a home game to a sterile environment to increase the fanbase?
3) if Jim can get a caravan of people from his hood to make the 15 minute drive to see Rutgers, should I honestly put the stipulation that they have to all be Rutgers fans?

Rutgers fans like to boast that it is New York City's school and that by playing for RU its athletes will get NY media attention. So, presented with the opportunity to maximize those benefits, RU fans do what comes naturally-balk and complain.

If there is anything to complain about....it's this.

Maybe it will be someday, but outside a couple of too rare moments, RU football is not a great product. I go mostly to see friends and chill at the tailgate in a pleasant, convenient, and familiar setting. The football is a nice bonus. I guess I'm also a bit masochistic. Trust me, there are plenty of "die hards" let alone casuals who feel the same way about RU football. One of the few opportunities a year to do this is being removed and I'm still being forced to pay for it.

And for what? There will be zero gained from this game. It's already been noted in the press we will not be making any additional money off this and if you think it will actually help the program in some other tangible way, well...

Subways, trains, Path, tolls, parking, etc. For many of us College Football game day is a relief from that drudgery. A game at Yankee Stadium is much more of the same.

1, can't predict market a year out...no clue
2, I'd say flood/Herman did this more for money, not necessarily thinking of increasing fanbase.
3, I'd blame that on him, not u.

It's icing on a turd. It look Flood's "genius" to give up a home game for nothing.

Home games get played in Piscataway, the end. And I live closer to YS and it's cheaper for me to get there as well. I'd rather drive down to a real college football experience, not this BS.

I really hope it's not in the ticket package, I'm totally uninterested and it would be the first "home" game missed since I had season tix.

I'm very surprised more people aren't completely stoked for this. I don't know how much it benefits your football team because there is a long way to go but for the wrestling team? Good Lord, you are an up and coming program and other than Iowa and Okie State, who else has had this type of vision and/or recruiting pitch.
1)We've already seen Rutgers football at Yankee stadium. We know the sight lines are lousy, and we know the field is worse then lousy. We also know that, even when playing against ND, that place was not near a sell out.

2)Is it that great for the wrestling team if they are playing in front of a 3/4 empty stadium? We talked about the similar situation for the NJ HS team playing at Michigan this year when it was completely empty. Is that better then playing in front of a packed crowd at your actual home venue?

"There is no huge payment from the Yankees like when Rutgers moved a home game against Army to MetLife Stadium in 2010. In fact, I'm told Rutgers is paying a modest fee (I've heard $70,000) and the Yankees will be on the hook for the ticket sales with Rutgers getting a percentage of the gate."

How much does a game at HPSS cost for event day staff, parking, securoty, etc?
