Charlie Partridge Fired at FAU-Friend of Chris Ash

He'd be a huge addition to this staff. We need former HCs to help Chris and the rest get the hang of things. Would love him in an Asst HC role

I don't agree. I think the defensive side of the ball is solid with coaches. Offense is a little light on experience, and many agree.

There is talk that Major Applewhite may not follow Herman to Texas. Wonder what Darell Hazell's plans are? He was AHC under Tressel at Ohio State and a NJ guy. One of his coaches is already on our staff. Yeah, his record was not good at Purdue, but he had success at Kent State. Could be a good ear to bend.

He may not need a major position on the defensive staff. Even just as AHC he is a worthwhile add.

Don't think we can get Applewhite. He'll go to a big school to be OC before taking a HC job in a couple years. Hazell is an interesting name for sure

Applewhite has some skeletons and a lawsuit in his closet, which is why he may not go to Texas. It's in his Wikipedia page. But rumor is he is under consideration as HC for Houston.

As to FAU, Adam Rittenberg from ESPN says:
Expect Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell to be a top candidate at Florida Atlantic. Fickell worked with FAU athletic director Pat Chun at Ohio State. This job should attract a lot of interest, and I could see Michigan co-offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch also getting involved.
-----
If true about Fickell, that puts Greg in sole possession of DC at tOSU and probably next up for openings next year.

Yep, my gut tells me Major Applewhite isn't welcome back in Austin, but would likely stay at Houston.

Ash's other Drake buddy, Dave Doeren survived the guillotine at NCState with a win over rival UNC.

I would expect an OSU or Mich coordinator to land somewhere a bit better than FAU.

But PantherGrowl will tell you Doerren is an idiot for firing the offensive genius Matt Canada, who went to Pitt and did a bang up job this year.

And to the folks who think having head coaching experience elsewhere is a prerequisite to success as a P5 head coach, Doerren was 11-3 and 12-1 at NIU before being named NC State's head coach.

2013 at NC State? : 3-9 and 0-8. He had a decent season in year 2, but mediocre the last 2 years.

He really has not been much of an upgrade over Tom O'Brien

Concur.

My coaching philosophy is that your strongest Xs & Os guy needs to be the coordinator opposite your head coach's experience. Ash is a defensive coach, so our most qualified assistant, the guy with the best resume on the entire staff, should be the OC.

Hopefully, Ash sees/recognizes the disparity on offensive and defensive experience:
Defense:
Ash- 20 years; 5 years as DC for P5 teams
Niemann (DC)- 30 years; 5 years as DC at Northern Illinois
Burnam (DL)-18 years; 6 years in P5
Busch (DB)- 28 years; 15 years in P5
Henry (DBs)-1 year

Offense:
Mehringer (OC)- 5 years, no P5 experience even as coordinator
Blazek (OL) -14 years; no P5
Kuhr (RB)- 2 years at JMU; no P5
Williams (WR)- 10 years; 3 years P5

That's 77 years of experience (97 if you count Ash) and 26 years of P5 experience on defense versus 31 years and 3 years of P5 on defense.

[roll]Good work.

This is not meant to criticize the coaching staff in any way. Maybe when he was assembling his staff, the coaches on staff were the best choices available to Chris Ash for the system he wanted to run, and as any new HC would do, he relied on his previous contacts and colleagues to narrow down his list. But on offense, where he arguably needed MORE, not less experience, he got less. My instinct tells me Ash will not make any changes this year, perhaps because of budget reasons or other reasons. But if we have another year like we did on offense next year, it would be wise to consider someone with experience as co-OC or AHC.

Well, it is certainly unlikely that any of our assistants will be on any lists for other jobs when you look at the resume they compiled this year so, Knight, I agree that Ash will not be making any changes this year. Also, this group of players has spent the year adjusting to the new staff and I think Ash would want to keep the staff in tact and not create another situation to which the players have to adjust. So those of you who want the OC gone, I wouldn't count on it.

@Knight Shift are you going to start a thread for every fired coach this off-season?
No. This one was a little close to home, as he and Ash knew each other. Had thought that he would have been a candidate for Ash's DC this year (2016) if Partridge felt rumblings he would be fired.
Started a separate thread to collect the other firings which are bound to come.

Not be making any changes because our Coaches won't be get any FBS offers ? ( wont leave on their own).
What about Ash making changes based on necessity for the good of the program ...

Name one or two realistic changes you want to see, but take into account that Coach Ash said he has a "ton of faith" in Drew Mehringer, so firing Drew is off the table.

Agree. Got to find a way to get some more experience on offense. Ash is clearly targeting guys he has experience with so that limits his options.

I have suggested it in other threads. Don't know if it would fly-but Darell Hazell is available. Yeah, he bombed at Purdue, but he has a ton of experience as a WRs coach at RU, Army, WMU and 7 years at tOSU under Tressel. Jafar Williams on our staff worked with him at Kent State and Purdue. Hazell is a South Jersey guy. Doubt it would happen-but he is out there, and perhaps he would consider Co-OC/AHC?

Well, my suggestion is not happening. More experience on defense it is. Who gets chopped to make room for Charlie?

Well you nailed it.

I LIKE this part about his bio:
"Partridge was widely credited as Wisconsin's lead recruiter in the state of Florida, and helped land five-star running back Alex Collins for the Razorbacks in his first two months on the job."

Could be Okruch because Partridge was a STC /DL at Wisconsin and Pitt .
Also coached LBs one of his Pitt STC years
My bet is he'll wind up RU's STC and Okruch will be out.

That is my point - he will keep the staff together to maintain continuity for the good of the program. I think (obviously I don't know) based on things he has said about the kids buying in and having to learn a whole new system that bringing in new coaches would be a step backwards. From his point of view the good of therpgram may mean keeping the staff together.

Wow I thought this was going to be another SN circle jerk until this tweet. How do we feel about this?
He apparently was Wisconsin's best recruiter in Florida-so that is huge for RU. Would like to see RU get more experience on offensive side of ball too, but this is a great get. Charlie appears to be a great coach and a man of high character.

My uneducated guess on who he replaces is Burnham. On two different occasions I saw he and Ash having very heated discussions on the sidelines.
