So everyone here likes to slam America yet cases are surging in Hong Kong and Melbourne
Hong Kong has 7.5MM people, about as many as Arizona and just hit 100 cases per day (with many coming from travelers), which truly is high for them, whereas AZ peaked around 3500 cases per day, which is about the same as NJ (which has about 23% more people than AZ). 100 cases would be a blip for either state. And Hong Kong has 12 deaths vs. 15.7K in NJ and almost 3K in AZ. And HK is taking far more serious action than AZ and will likely be able to stamp this flare-up out, given their mask culture (just like SK has and Japan probably will).
Australia's flare-up is similar to Hong Kong's, per capita, and much, much smaller than Florida's, for example, which has a similar population: Australia has 11,000 cases and 123 deaths vs. FL having 337K cases and almost 5000 deaths. And their immediate response to a much, much smaller rise was to institute mandatory masking, whereas DeSantis is still dithering about that. Will be interesting to see if they can stamp this out, as they don't have quite the mask culture that many of the Asian countries have, but they do have a very aligned scientific/political leadership.
So yeah, both of these countries are doing far, far better than the US and despite that, when faced with even small (relative to the US) flare-ups, they're both taking far more significant mitigation/control steps. The data are easy to find at the link below. I could cut/paste a few graphics if you like.
