With what appears to be pretty open and 'out in the public eye' job searching - and some reports that the Mississippi State situation is not all hunky-dory - has Mullin irreversibly put himself on the path to somewhere else?
Usually when a coach is exploring opportunities - but wants to keep his option to stay put intact, he does his exploring in a more discrete manner.
He seems motivated to make a move.

The worst that could happen to him is that they sue him over the buyout...which has happened before. He will get a job, and a good one, if he wants to leave. What he has done at Miss. State is very impressive. It is not easy to win there. They are not even top dog in their own state, and they play in the SEC with Alabama.

This just my opinion. In 2013 they wanted him out after 7-6 record. He's about to lose Prescott and he knows sustained success is near impossible at Miss. St. When your playing second fiddle in your own State to Ole Miss. Plus your playing the SEC west. He knows he may last one to two years there even with a winning record and wants out while his options are still plentiful. He could careless who knows it. SEC schools expectations are beyond ridiculous down there.

Mullen's stock is probably never going to be higher. It looks like Georgia's going with Kirby Smart and Miami is probably going with either Richt or Schiano. So there really is no big move for him to make - yeah, Missouri and South Carolina are better jobs than Mississippi State but it isn't like you're guaranteed championships at either school. If there's appeal for him to move back up north and get paid, maybe Maryland takes a run at him. While I think he'd be a really good get for Rutgers and he has roots in this part of the country, he feels like a longshot at best.
