go to youtube and watch last week's game. Use the pause button liberally and watch the offensive plays unfold. It's upfront blocking. Penn State had guys coming in unblocked or just plain beating blocks and shedding linemen quickly.
We could try better play calling that suites our talent.

Whatever play calling you do you still have to block the man in front of you there is no play that beats and unblocked defender who should be blocked.
First play of the game is a read option play that Gio completely reads wrong. That needed to be a pull. You can tell is a read option by where is head goes.
Even so, 81 and 42 wiff on blocks missed completely. 81's man ran right past him.
What was 32 supposed to do in that play? He was way downfield.42 yes but maybe not 81. Guarantee his rule is anyone head up to inside he leaves alone and the OT rule is anyone head up to outside he leaves and he down blocks first guy inside of him. They are reading the player between the TE and the OT. Should have been a pull and a huge run to the left.
They blocked much better, but still not very well.Seems like the almost the exact same guys blocked much better last year.
These same offensive linemen blocked for 35 TDs by running backs the past 2 seasons. This year a grand total of 1 rushing TD by a RB. So give the OC and OL coach their share of the blame if not more.

Waving the white flag isn't a play.

DM stated in that presser that Flanagan (81) has to get that safety.

Fair enough. But they clearly leave the player lined up inside to go free which to me screams option read and then the read is wrong. The ball should have never gone that way. UNLESS they said give it. If they said give it I have zero defense for doing that.DM stated in that presser that Flanagan (81) has to get that safety.

And was 8 supposed to hand/pitch it to 23, or was 23 a decoy?
It's stunning, to me, that people just don't get this! Not just here, friends of mine, too, but at least my dad has finally admitted that I was right about the lack of talent and athleticism in the program.
That's not entirely true. Cole is new at left tackle, he played guard last year IIRC, and Denman went down mid-year and right tackle has been manned since by RSF Kamaal Seymour. Upside is pretty good on both of these kids, but it was very much a trial by fire learning process this year. These same offensive linemen blocked for 35 TDs by running backs the past 2 seasons. That's not good. He's going to cut your allowance now. :)It's stunning, to me, that people just don't get this! Not just here, friends of mine, too, but at least my dad has finally admitted that I was right about the lack of talent and athleticism in the program.
I think the problem is with the culture of the program which does include the fan-base.When you really think about it, the problem lies with us the fans.
Wouldn't blocking technique, foot work, etc be something you teach and practice ? These guys weren't all scrubs picked up walking around New Brunswick. Someone pointed out in another thread there's 40 three star players on the roster right now. The extent some of you will go to absolve this HC is reaching comical levels.
And if you do what Op suggested and actually watch the plays develop you will see it's a different guy who screws up each time. Could the coaches do more? Of course but only so much you can do without depth.Wouldn't blocking technique, foot work, etc be something you teach and practice ? Yes but running a pro set stretch and or man blocking scheme is very different than running a high tempo zone blocking scheme.
Our money play for years was power (with a down blocking TE and a FB involved also). We do not run anything like that anymore.
I see your point but Ash has been in place for almost a year now with his new OL coach, S&C, nutrition and two rounds of concentrated practice sessions (Spring and summer). I wouldn't think it's the equivalent of a moon mission to teach existing offensive linemen new blocking schemes and to at least see some kind of improvement as the year wears on.
