That would be a big mistake. He is Sonny Gray 2.0.
I know the Mets have up too much for him. But he got too many chances this year to be given the closer's role next year. Shoot, I'd alternate Lugo and Wilson as the closer for the rest of this year.

Pirates giving up double digits to Cubs again.

The Cubs will keep playing hard. It's not just to get a wild card. They desperately need home-field advantage in the wild card game; the spread between their performance at Wrigley and on the road is truly remarkable.

If the Cubs win today,, then the Phillies are pretty much goners; they would trail by 4.5 with 14 to go (13 for the Cubs). And the Phillies -- also a poor road team --must go on an 11-game trip (Atlanta, Cleveland, Washington) before returning home to face the Marlins, who have given the Phillies fits all year.

Did you notice that Bryce Harper was ejected from today's Phillies game for arguing balls and strikes? This is the second time he's been ejected like this. The first time, Jake Arrieta publicly criticized him ("we need him in right field") The season is over for Arrieta, and I wonder if anyone will say anything now.

The Pirates have given up 46 runs to the Cubs in less than 3 full games so far this weekend. WTH? I’m not sure if the Mets could even that by only pitching Familia and Diaz.

Cubs have 3 against CIN, then STL at home, and then 3 away at PIT and 3 away at STL to end season after today.

Brewers will beat STL. Just gave up a grand slam to Ryan Braun in top of 9th to give Brewers lead 7-4.

I like the fact that the Mets announcers speak their minds and are not afraid to first-guess. Cohen did not like the move and said so. Hernandez did like it and said so. Made for good TV and added to the drama IMO, rather than detract from it.

Best trio of baseball announcers that I have seen. Each brings something different to the table and they work very well together.

It is the one area that the Mets have always excelled. Starting with Kiner/Nelson/Murphy then the McCarver years, Healy was decent but a little boring but this group of Keith/Gary/Ron is the best 3-sum in baseball right now hands down and not even close.

I see the Met's have Alonso in the 2nd hole...looks like they may be trying to get him those few extra AB's for the new rookie HR record. Unless MC thinks he needs a break again before a winter in hawaii...lol
I love the lineup today though.Davis/Nimmo/Rosario is a fun bottom half of the lineup and add in Wheeler...

You guys need to get over Nimmo. What did he do last night besides stand there and let a pitch hit him? He's no catalyst. Rosario is a catalyst. McNeil and Alonso are catalysts when they're hitting. Which hasn't been much lately outside of the 3 homer games each had recently. By catalyst's I mean when they're producing we score
Thus the overall struggles for the teams offense of late.

Where did this practice start of batting a power hitter in the #2 position? Traditionally, the #2 spot went to a contact hitter, particularly one who could do the hit-and-run. Of course, the hit-and-run is now passe as everyone swings for the fences. But a number of teams do what the Mets are doing with Alonso. The Phillies' manager wanted Harper to hit #2, but he said he was more comfortable at #3.(He has been at #2 occasionally, and even was #1 for a while.) How old is this practice, and (of anyone knows) who started it?

Pretty much a must win tonight as the Cubs did what I expected. Cant fall another game behind and maintain realistic hopes. Will the offense show up tonight against another quality pitcher. Its one thing to beat up on shoddy pitching but what do you do when the quality of the opposition is better. Other than the Nats we have not fared well against the other playoff teams or contenders.

Even if the Mets lose tonight, they will still be in better shape than my Phillies. Of course, that's not saying much!! At least the Mets play their last seven games at home, although three are against Atlanta.

Analytics...I believe the thought is now that if you move your best hitter from the 3 or 4 spot to the 2nd spot, they get about 30 more plate appearances during the coarse of a season. It has been happening for at least 2-3 years now.
They made a big deal of it last year with the Yankees and Judge.

Analytics pfaff. The folly of equating the biggest power threat with best hitter. I'd rather a guy with a good average, some speed, handles the bat well to hit behind runners and a high contact rate. But what do I know?

Here's a Philadelphia Inquirer heading on its web site tonight: "Phillies haven't gotten the pitching boost they expected from Jason Vargas since trade deadline." Indeed, Vargas hasn't won a single game in a Phillies uniform. I know Stroman has been a disappointment for the Mets, but still . . .

But still be in bad shape compared to the Cubs and Brewers.

Is Carrot Top pitching for Los Angeles?

But still what? At least give away your two best remaining prospects while you have the chance.

I kinda hate what analytics has done to baseball. The shift, the opener, no more small ball...Hell, the game's greatest power hitters over history used to and still adhere to hitting down on a ball and now it is launch angles...Same thing with batters not caring if they strike out.

It is why there are still some hitters like McNeil that I just love to watch play.

The regular season consists of 162 games, not one. You have to look at the whole season to judge players, not just what happened in one particular game. I think everyone (including you) would agree that Diaz and Cano have underperformed expectations.
Unless your name is Bill Buckner or Bucky Dent.

Everyone with a brain recognizes that Buckner had a fine career, and, because of his back, should never have been on the field in that ninth inning. As for Dent, there is a saying that every dog has his day.

Well theres the 7 blown saves he has this year...

And how many games did the offense put up 0-2 runs when deGrom pitched? 12 or 13?
the Met's are 11-12 in games this year that he has given up 2 or less runs...
Wash is 11-6 in games Max Scherzer has given up 2 or less...17-4 for Ryu 16-4 for Verlander 20-3 for Cole

13-12 in 2 run or less given up last year too...Not counting the 1 inning game- he has started 61 games in the past 2 years and 48 of those he has given up 2 or less runs...

Thanks to you and the others who are making my point for me.
