OT: 2022 World Cup Thread

Kinda sick watching Uruguan players chasing the refs into the tunnels. Suarez actually showed class for once just sitting and crying. Tough titty. They should have scored more goals.
they didn't use their one advantage over other teams during group play. they have a bunch of fwds who can just bully the crap out of anyone...and they didn't.

Uruguay sat back in the second half expecting to get in. They should have been pushing for the 3rd goal all along. It was not hard to imagine Portugal being unmotivated and SK getting a win.

Really? Happens multiple times per game, like clockwork. No surprise. It should be ridiculed but alas other players want to reserve their opportunity to partake.
Not true. If you really believe that, show your work.

Question for the soccer experts

How much better are the teams in the top European leagues versus the national teams.?

Like would arsenal or man city just cruise through the World Cup if they were playing in it.

Obviously national teams don't play together all year (limited practices ect...)

But like how much worse is quality of soccer in World Cup vs epl?

The club teams are better because you basically have mostly starters from every country starting. I don't think they'd cruise through a WC but they'd be in the final 8 at minimum. Just like any sport anything can happen.

True. The Euro leagues are the all stars. It's be like the National League against the Cubbies.

The club teams are better because they play together so much. The top clubs sign WC starters from many nations, so outside of say Brazil and France, the club teams will have more talent than a given WC side.

Also, many WC teams may be loaded at certain positions, but thin at other positions. Club teams typically have more balanced lineups.

I listened to a podcast recently where the host described WC teams as playing either offense or defense, whereas club teams flow a lot better between offense and defense.

All that said, I greatly prefer the WC tournament to any other soccer competition.

So I tune in for the last 10 minutes of regulation in the Cameroon/Brazil game, and I'm rooting for Cameroon as the underdog. Really disappointed to see Brazil score the goal, and then realized that Cameroon was wearing the traditional Brazilian colors!

Just watched the DVR of the Brazil-Cameroon match...what a strange ending, with Cameroon scoring in stoppage time to take a 1-0 lead, but the guy who scored ripped his shirt off which is an automatic yellow card - but he already had a yellow, so he was sent off with a red. Sure it was unlikely they'd score another with maybe 6 min left and that the Swiss would give up a goal with 1-2 minutes left to only tie Serbia to allow Cameroon to go through, but down to 10 men made that almost impossible. Still a great win over Brazil's 2nd team, who blew a ton of chances, although the Cameroon keeper made some great saves.

This is the one I want us to win so badly….only missed 1 home match in person in the World Cup qualifying process for the US. 10 Am let’s do this!…

So word is that the Netherlands squad has been hit with a flu outbreak.

Sorry if this was already posted

This one is pretty straightforward to me 1) Can we successfully press de Jong without getting exposed? 2) Pulisic vs Dumfries - edit: I'm not just talking about Puli on O. What's GB's plan when Dumfries adds #s to attack? Is Antonee more conservative out of necessity?

Zimmerman and Ferreira starting. He's just trying everyone up top. Reyna still nowhere to be found.

Berhalter, in an interview yesterday or the day before, said a bunch of teams had experienced flu-like symptoms since they’d arrived in Doha. Said the US team went through it just after arriving and it took a bit for everyone, especially some of the coaches, to get past it and back to breathing easily again.

I wonder if this, in part at least, explains why the US players have seemed so exhausted in the latter stages of their matches. I know the players are working very hard to play the aggressive style of soccer they’re playing. But I’ve seen teams do that for well over 90 minutes without showing anywhere near the level of fatigue evident in this WC so far.

Why Ferreira?
Sargent hurt. Wright has been invisible. So it could be just next man up/can anybody play here? Coming in I thought Fereira would be the pick. We don't have great options up top but I want to be optimistic- he is young and works hard. I think he'll get a chance - he just needs to score it.

This will be my first watch of the WC, as the US games have not aligned with my work schedule.

Was thinking of going to a bar and having a bloody mary, but I do want to go to the gym later. So I'll be drinking coffee while in my jammies.
