OT: 2022 World Cup Thread

Again that’s how you finish in the box..2 goals is likely too much now. Offense isn’t good enough (if board jinx works I wouldn’t be unhappy lol)

They scored from basically the exact same spot and same play both times. Both times wide open.

oh well...so much for Dest being our best player...completely failed to cover Blind there...not looking good
The problem with Dest. He's not really a defender. Pulisic was awful that half. Let's call a spade a spade.

This game has the feel of what I mentioned going into the Iran game. I was thinking if they play in a defensive bunker, I think we'd have trouble with that because I don't see the passing skill and play development to get by that.

The Dutch aren't playing defensively or in a bunker but it's giving me the same feel of that style. No space and we can't create it or break through it.

In this game we're even messing up simple passes and stuff at times and the Dutch can make us pay for it.

Rarely played soccer and far from an expert, but how do you again and again not cover the trailing player heading to the box?

Dest was way late to respond on that. Probably a little gassed from all his attacking play. Thing is, he needs to be attacking if we’re going to get some goals. So we’re damned if we do, damned if we don’t.

Reyna for Ferreira at the half. Also need to keep an eye on Musah who is not having a good game decision-wise, might need to send Aaronson in for him.

Down the other end it seems very congested, highly contested, down on our end they slice and dice us.

They've had very little time down near our goal, but score 2 beauties.

Why do RU DBs let WRs from the other team behind them all the time?

Answer = just a lack of talent

Dest had him covered initially, and was in proper position (mostly) so as to be able to watch the man he’s guarding and the see the ball and have a good angle to defend crosses. But, probably due to fatigue from having just been all over the final third in the attack, he was a second too slow to react and that’s all it takes against good players.

I applaud the attenpt but you're out of your element here. The goalscorer is past his prime and playing in the Dutch league nowadays. Dest is a better talent. That was concentration.

No, that’s not it at all. We have tons of talent. But we need Dest to help us score and there are trade offs to sending a defender up so aggressively. Being winded after a long attacking sequence where Dest worked non-stop for a couple minutes is one of the downsides to the strategy.

If anything, it’s the lack of a couple true striker types that results in the need to get our wing defenders so far up field, and so often, that is the problem.

We're only down 14-0 at the half (using football's magic scoring numbers).

We can make a comeback!
Best thing that could happen would be for the Netherlands to sit back and defend. But with an extra goal at the end of the half, they are likely to press their attack hard.

Any thoughts on whether there will be subs starting half 2. Does GB finally get Reyna some significant time? I don’t know enough to say, looking to you soccer peeps? Mild? Numbers?

I always view our "lack of talent" as compared to our potential talent - our best talent ends up going to football or basketball.

Imagine throwing 6'7" McConnel out there and shut down the middle of the defense.
Or Jaden Ivey/Ja Morant sprinting or rising up for a header over everyone.

+1
Our best and brightest don't play soccer.

On the first goal, that ref ran interference between US defender and Nederland player, freed him a clear path. Watch it! Bull crap

USA scored 2 goals in three games and has failed to score so far against Netherlands.Offense clearly is lacking..

I cant tell, from TV coverage angles, if they are channeling the ball to our left side, or we’re intentionally trying to play up the left side for some reason. But if they have watched film on us, keeping the ball away from the Dest/Weah combo is wise. Nearly all our best scoring chances, so far in this tourney, have come from our right side.

I've never really played soccer but if I was the goalie I think I could have saved some of the shots the US team has taken. They were right at the goalie on the ground. And without a lot on them.
