OT: 2022 World Cup Thread

I’ve got the pregame coverage on and am reminded why I usually skip it. I know it’s supposed to pump me up, but you can only hear the same platitudes so many times before it gets irritating. I don’t really care how it felt to the commentators to play in games of the past.

Wish they would bring on knowledgeable analysts to talk tactics and soccer stuff.

100% what the hell are they going to do if we ... win? Spend 15 minutes talking about how there is a 10 year old watching somewhere being inspired ... again 🤣

That's a Fox decision based on what they think casual fans want. I guarantee you those guys would rather talk tactics...

I think fans like tactics. It’s one of the reasons I like UM on the CFB Fox pregame. I see Athletic articles that do deeper dives into schemes get lots of good reviews.

Two times now, players not passing early enough. At the point they pass, they should just shoot instead. Nobody they were passing to was in any better a position to shoot.

Same thought crossed my mind. It’s not like the passing is on target or the players are anticipating and being in position to receive so might as well just shoot the ball.

Probably has a lot to do with it. But the network is wrong, as usual. These major networks make so many lame decisions, it’s lucky for them people are lazy and watch so much TV.

US players are making some fundamental mistakes in decision-making. Stuff they all know better than to do. I think they are feeling the pressure and their youth is hurting them a little with their lack of patience on the ball.

Also, Netherlands strategy is working well for them.

The 4-3-3 is not going to work against the way Holland is playing us.

We are also not doing ourselves any favors by passing too slowly.

This one is pretty straightforward to me 1) Can we successfully press de Jong without getting exposed? 2) Pulisic vs Dumfries - edit: I'm not just talking about Puli on O. What's GB's plan when Dumfries adds #s to attack? Is Antonee more conservative out of necessity?
Unfortunately 2 has been bad so far. Dumfries with the assist and running free looking more and more dangerous. Pulisic should've scored and doesn't contribute on d.

NED looks so much more dangerous when they get down low.

USA also seems to give up on plays a lot.

Look at the inactivity of the US players around the ball (around the first attacker). That’s a big problem. Don’t know if it’s fatigue or what, but attacking shape and movement is way off from what is needed right now.

To score, we need combination play. For combination play to work, we need players away from the ball to move early so that we don’t have 6 players, with all their defenders, all too near the ball. It’s preventing the space needed to make runs or even set walls for wall passes.

Sounds like we need a “spread offense” as I referred to earlier in the thread 😂

Our midfield has settled down, making better decisions and passes.

Finally an commentator mentions it.

very static and passing has not been crisp...Ferreira has been bad...wish we had a real 9...

Again final third killing us.

Ferreira dropping deep to help out, which is fine but need someone making runs in the box.

I like that shot at least, just shoot if the shot is there imo don’t be looking to pass too much

The poor passing is, mostly, a result of poor support play, poor movement off the ball. Has left the first attacker with poor options as pressure is applied.
