OT: Copa America 2016

Taken from the article above: "Many of the people who go to [Mexico’s games in the US] do not have legal papers,” says Juan Villoro, the Mexican author of God Is Round, a book of vignettes on soccer, and one of the most respected living writers about the sport. “If the border patrol would make an inspection in these stadiums, they would find many illegal Mexicans there. But these so-called aliens risk this situation because they want to be in Mexico. At that very moment, the stadium is a part of Mexico. It’s really moving to see those people evoking so many emotions and trying to be part of this little Mexico for 90 minutes. This is extraordinary.”

Been saying this since the first and only U.S. game vs Mexico I went to in San Diego. If our government was serious about collecting illegal aliens, INS should be all over those stadiums.
Maybe your buddy Trump could just build 50-foot high walls around the stadiums to keep the illegals out...

So far looks like fairly solid play by the US in the first half against Paraguay. Good save by the goalie on one and Brooks with a nice clear on a 3 on 1.

I was just thinking to myself recently as a mainstream fan who watches soccer occasionally that it seems like diving has gone down quite a bit in recent years, not eliminated completely but seems less frequent. Obviously a good thing as it was one of things I hated most about the sport. Of course then in this game it feels like Paraguay was falling at the drop of a hat a lot in that first half.

Bad break on the questionable yellows for Yedlin. So glad we got the lead in the first half tonight.

Man, this officiating is not looking even right now. Wood just got taken out and no call.

I agree with the announcer that the first one was questionable and the 2nd one was a foul. The Fox guest ref commentator thought both were good calls though. Regardless, I do agree that if you're playing with a yellow you have to be smarter about how hard you challenge some balls.

Do think the officiating hasn't been even until maybe the last 5-10 mins.

The second foul and subsequent yellow was obviously out of frustration. I mean both fouls were within a minute of each other.. Gotta keep your cool if you are Medlin, although it's tough when the official makes a poor call like that

Even if Yedlin fouled on both, were they both worthy of yellows?
I think the second one was the first no because he got good contact on the ball. So IMO the 2nd was justified but not the first, the first just looked like a hard legal play to me but again I'm just a pedestrian fan.

Even if it was a bad call though, Yedlin has to be smarter IMO in how hard he challenges a ball knowing he has a card already. That goes for anyone, especially with a whole half yet to play too. Gotta say I wasn't too happy with some of the yellows for dissent too. The ref was lousy no doubt but you have to control your emotions in what is a an emotional heated setting. It's a cheap way to accumulate a yellow.

BTW how far do the yellows carry over? Do they carry through the quarterfinals or further?

Nice win by the US. Toughed it out with 10 men for the half. Kudos to Brooks on defense, he came up with quite a few nice clears.

Agree Yedlin needs to keep his cool there. He played a strong first half tonight. Brooks and Zardes played very well too. I like the attitude that Wood brings to the game as long as he keeps it under control. Guan with some great saves. All around, lots of things to like tonight.

Can Costa Rica do us a favor somehow?

Brooks was an absolute monster today. Yedlin has to be smart there, you get a yellow you cannot make that next foul near midfield with no threat occurring.

Great win to hold on. Great goaltending by Brad today also.

Great team effort. They are getting better each game, which is good to see.

Gutsy team win today. Team is playing well. Love that we finally have a competent center back pairing. Making a huge difference.

Everyone had a good game today. Brooks, Wood and Zardes all growing up in front of our eyes. It is a thing of beauty for our future

Oh...and go Ticos!!

Was at the game - amazing atmosphere. What were they saying on the stream about the amount of cards being given out? Had to be at least 8 or 9.

Wow. Costa Rica is currently beating Colombia 3-1 with only about 20 minutes to go. If they hold on the US wins Group A and most likely avoids Brazil in the quarterfinals. We'd probably play Ecuador who we beat 1-0 in a friendly prior to the tournament. We'd also avoid Argentina (best team in the tournament imo) until the finals if we were to get that far, as after the quarters we'd likely play Mexico or Chile in the semifinals. Obviously there's lots of "what ifs" in there but this tournament is shaping up very nicely for the US for at least a trip to the semis, and potentially even the finals at Metlife which would be absolutely incredible.

Was at the game...was a very good time. Just sat at the hotel bar chatting with some guy about soccer. Knowing basically zero I went on and on about my "opinions". Turns out I was chatting with Eric Wynalda.

And we win the group! The US has honestly performed exceptionally well at all major tournaments since the disappointing 2006 World Cup. US soccer fans have seen tons of phenomenal results over the last 10 years, and winning a group that includes top 5 Colombia is just another feat to add to the list.

From winning the 2007 Gold Cup over Mexico, to the MAGICAL run at the 2009 Confederations Cup, to winning our Group at the 2010 World Cup that included England, to winning the 2013 Gold Cup, to advancing out of the Group of Death at the 2014 World Cup, and finally winning our Copa America group over the likes of Colombia. It's really been an incredible 10 years, and to all the US soccer detractors: you must really, REALLY love the taste of crow, bald eagle-flavored of course.

Awesome...that must have been a trip as he is brutally transparent and honest.

Anything you can share?

Not really because I literally am a soccer novice. I went to the bar to order a scotch and root beer floats for my kids. He asked if I went to the game. I said yes, thought they played well. He disagreed. I told him I have soccer friends who think wood sucks. He disagreed. Some guy with a PSU t-shirt came over and asked for a pic. I told him Joe knew. He didn't comment.
PSU guy left we continued to talk about soccer and BS. Bunch more people asked for pics and autographs. Some random guy came in and he said my buddy is here have a great night. I asked the PSU guy who he was and that's that.

Nice unexpected win by Costa Rica. I believe they said he substituted 10 in the line up to start the game. They said he's done that type of thing before though substituting 8 in another game. Not sure if that's his usual tact and resting up for the next round or if he thought Costa Rica would be a cake walk.

Wow...you let your kids have Scotch and Root Beer Floats...sounds gross! :-p

Thanks for the reply

Not going to lie, was rooting for Columbia at the end of the match for selfish reasons last night--really wanted to see the US in person on Friday at MetLife

I was also at the game and agree on the atmosphere. We tailgated in th AO section and marched in with the Outlaws -great time.
The refs calls in the second half were very one sided. So much for host country favoritism. Brooks was outstanding - great play on the 3 on 1. Zardis had a great first half when we had a full attack and his speed created the goal.
Couple of other comments - lousy job pricing the tickets. No complaints for my tickets which were $165 bought at face from Ticketmaster, row 15 behind the USA bench but why was the second level opposite us virtually empty? Lower and upper decks were full so it looked funny with no fans in the middle.
Also, first time visit to the Linc. Very positive- easy in and out, great having all 3 venues together. Spent some time in Xfinity Live to beat the heat and had a great time watching Euro Cup action. Easy 83 mile drive from New Providence.

Diving may be down but only a tad. I think what happened was US media was very anti soccer in the beginning and played up the diving aspect as a way of praising the physicality of US sports by comparison to soccer.

Diving/flopping is occurring in all applicable US sports i.e. Basketball, football (post play personal foul penalties, and even found its way into hockey. Drawing fouls in US sports on questionable calls used to just be commentated on by saying it was a crafty or veteran move by the player drawing the foul.

It's not so much the run of the mill diving that rubs me the wrong way as it is the guys who flop, then roll around writhing in agony for two minutes when they were not touched because they are trying to draw a card from the ref.

Sounds like some of those earlier reports of a combined Copa America/Gold Cup were shot down by Sunil Gulati. If it were to happen sounds like it would be a completely new tournament separate from the Copa America and Gold Cup. Not sure how that would work with regards to scheduling.

Terrible call by the refs on Brazil. Another hand of god goal I guess. Why didn't Fox show any replays until after the goal was allowed. Only after did they show the replays. I don't even know if they're allowed replays for a play like that. I don't think they are so not sure why it took so long if that's the case.

In a sport where goals are at a premium and scoring isn't frequent I don't know why they don't add replays of goals in general not just goal line stuff. Don't they want to get this stuff right and avoid controversies.

Watch Brazil lose to Peru tomorrow!
6 min to go and it could happen now after that controversial handball goal. Colombia get the better draw by finishing 2nd? Who's worse Peru or Ecuador or about the same.

Well it's official now, Brazil out. Was rooting for Peru but never like to see someone lose like that.

I would've rather played Peru in the quarters, especially because we just played and beat Ecuador before the tournament (not easy to beat a good team twice in two weeks). But besides that Ecuador is much more talented, although Peru has looked pretty good.

I didn't see the Peru goal. They are far behind Ecuador in the FIFA rankings FWIW. Stunning that Brazil did not get out of their group, though. Colombia music be pleased. So much for USA vs Brazil in Met Life! I would've preferred facing Peru too but that was out once Ecuador beat Haiti.

I hear you guys on wanting to play the lower ranked team, but either way, we need to show up and win this game. This is one of those - rare - situations, where we are actually better than the team we're playing in the knock out stage.

Time to stand up and be counted!

If you believe the FIFA rankings we are not better than Ecuador. They are ranked 13, USA 31.
