OT: DEVASTATING WILDFIRE ….Santa Monica/Palisades fire being aided by 50-80mph Santa Ana winds. 100mph possible overnight

A lot of missing information. Why would be people be angry at the Fire Chief for lack of water in the hydrants? That is a public utilities issue. The Fire Chief is not responsible for supply water to the hydrants.

From the article you quoted:

"When she was nominated to her position in 2022, she had been with the fire department for 22 years, having been a firefighter, paramedic, engineer, fire inspector, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief, fire marshal and deputy chief. She became Los Angeles' first female fire marshal in 2016. When she took the firefighter exam in the late 1990s, she ranked among the top 50 out of 16,000 applicants."
Lack of water, and crazy winds.

But people on the internet doing the blame game thing is to be expected.

When you leave out here and see the devastation first hand, the lack of leadership becomes very obvious.

The government didn't build one reservoir with the tax money that got voted for. This wasn't hard. But they still didn't do it.

Under no circumstances should hydrants not work and be fully pressurized. This is basic governance and care.

There is going to be hell to pay.

I didn't specifically blame her for the lack of water supply...but maybe that she be a top priority of a Fire Chief in dealing with the public officials, no? And you're right there is more to this story...

You have no idea what you are talking about. I told you- the fire chief is not in charge of water supply for the city. That would be a ludicrous task to assign to a fire chief. Whether the chief made it a "top priority" or not, it's not the Chief's responsibility.

The winds are the ex factor. We have a cabana around my pool that go absolutely shredded. We have some colored decorative balls outside. They are heavy. Basically small boulders. I found two of them in the pool. To move those would take a lot of power.

There are downed power lines and trees everywhere. The fires are biblical but beyond that there is going to be mass damage. It's a real hellscape. Sadly it looks like another night of this.

No one accused the chief of being in charge of the water supply. She's in charge of the force which her main focus, shall we say, was not producing the most well equipped fire fighters.

But to be clear, Newsome and Bass are in charge of the water supply. This was all very manageable with capable people. But we don't have that out here.

Details?

No. That was Newsom and Bass' job. They failed.

Bass has some nerve. She went on what is essentially a vacation knowing these winds were coming. They are entirely predictable. And were. She's useless anyway. Should have stayed away.
Didn't know who Bass was. Just googled her. LA Mayor. In addition to the Vacation, she also cut the fire fighter budget a couple months ago.

That's a bad look.

Thank you for straightening out how municipalities, public utilities and emergency services operate. It has no place right now. Emergency service work with the resources they are provided, and they request more resources when needed, and are often denied. Mayor Bass also slashed $17Million from the LAFD budget. That's not the Fire Chief's fault either.

City fire services decreased by $17.6 million through those adjustments, the X post shows. Other impacted services included “street services,” which decreased by $21.4 million, and sanitation, which decreased by $15.1 million.

Among budget items which received extra cash was “zoo,” which increased by $27,000, the information shows. Also receiving increases were “library,” which jumped $14.6 million, and “cannabis regulation,” which increased by $1.8 million.

Also reduced public works by $8.2M. That's for things like water supply.

There is an ongoing debate about clearing out brush, but in the mountains and canyons, that is not an easy thing to do.

It actually is very easy to do. You just need the funds and focus to do it.

The biggest issue is the reservoirs that were voted on, passed, taxes collected and never built. I'll say it again. SoCal is alleged to be in a constant drought. We get more than enough rain over any 5 year period to not be. But we let almost all of it run off into the ocean creating environmental issues in the ocean and lack of water on land.

Don't even get started on that that little body of water called the Pacific Ocean, which with relatively cheap desalination options, should make water an abundant resource.

But we have horrific leadership here and building anything is near impossible. You see this in certain states and Ca is one of them. We can't build here.

This didn't happen. We lose 90% of the water we get in the form of rain. In 2014 California voters overwhelmingly voted to invest billions in reservoir builds. The amount built? Zero.

Combine that with a reckless disregard of existing funds, such as the LA Mayor cutting roughly $20MM from the last fire budget and maybe those hydrants would have been pressurized. To say we were woefully unprepared would be an understatement. This was always going to happen.

As someone who is on the ground and who has numerous friends that have lost homes, to say the people are pissed would be an understatement.

Even better news, we are running out of water. Absolute colossal failure of the state and local government.

When you leave out here and see the devastation first hand, the lack of leadership becomes very obvious.

Majority of Californians will just vote those back into offices along with their empty promises.

Close relative of mine has been evacuated. Just spoke to them. If you don’t think California could be any worse get this. Authorities now have to divert resources to contend with criminal gangs who are robbing residences not on fire but in the evacuated zones. These are high end neighborhoods and the criminals know the residents have left. They told me people just getting cleaned out.

This is definitely happening. All of those bad hombres who have been arrested and let go. Numerous times.

We have a competent DA here now, but it's going to get worse before it gets better. There are a lot of shitbags walking the streets here.

Going to be another rough night out here. Winds are expected to blow through the night. Just based on the smoke direction it seems like the winds may have shifted, which I wouldn't say is a good thing.

Time to recall her ass!

When the proverbial dust settles there is going to be calls for her head. The optics, the delivery, the service, there is nothing she can do or say at this point to make people feel better.

People are going to be calling for her head and Newsom's too. The devastation is like nothing we've seen here.

And it's not like there haven't been other wildfires. Where's the prep? Where's the emergency planning? Where's the emergency resources? How is this surprising to anyone?

It's not normal at all in Ca. And focusing on DEI hiring over qualified candidates and hiring is most certainly a problem.

No. But it is the government's fault the hydrants were dry.
Literally nothing is designed to handle things that happen once every 50 or 100 years in a given spot. When Mother Nature calls, it’s all going to sh*t. There is a design limit to the number of structure fires a given municipal fire system is designed to handle and then you are sol.

More babble. Hilarious how the CE Board wingnuts are out in force, spinning like mad.

Right wing, left wing, who GAF. It’s all the same BS. You are hopelessly obsessed with that left/right BS. Pathetic.
Seems like you have quite the “hard on” for anyone who expresses an opinion that comes from the right, but when the same thing happens in the left you remain silent

hmm

I’m just to simple I guess.

How much is this fire going to cost ? 50 billion estimate so far

How much have previous fires cost ???

Why aren’t there 25 planes and 50 helicopters dropping water on fires non stop instead of seeing one plane and a helicopter or 2 every 20 mins ????

When I asked this question a few years back I read there are 3 planes and they cost too much . I don’t think 75 aircraft would cost 50 billion like they say this fire will cost

Last night the wind grounded the helicopters and limited the planes. I think some were flying earlier today.

Back to the actual fire, you know, the tragedy where people are suffering and need compassion and help:

Lack of resources due to cuts and lack of working hydrants:

We stayed in the Hollywood Hills for the USC game at the house of a B list actress:
