38 year old journeyman, Jim Herman, holds off Dustin Johnson among others to win the Houston Open for his first win.

This tourney was also the only Tour victory for Oradell native Jim McGovern back in 1993.

Anyone remember NJ golfing great Jeff Smith, 'The Natural", tremendous talent with an epic sad downfall and ending.

Jeff Thomas played at Plainfield west nine. His ashes were put over the practice green.

The article is spot on many accounts. Both the good and the bad. He was just a 2 years older than me and during my competitive golfing days everyone our age knew him. At the same time nobody knew him. He was at the time our generation's Walter Hagen. He would party all night and beat your brains out on the course the next morning.

Sadly back then we looked on to that kind of behavior with admiration. Part of it was we were all young, part of it was the drinking age was 18 and part because we didn't see it as a problem like we do today.

If true, it goes to show that anything Trump touches turns to gold.

He should do an ad that shows that if he can make this guy win a major PGA tournament, just think what he can do for the country.

If Trump does not become president, I can see him becoming the commissioner of the PGA or the NFL.

Will he be in Augusta for the Masters?

The victory yesterday got him into the Masters.

Hasn't he tried to become a member only to be turned down?

Back at SP in the late 60's, I remember guys talking of going to Rutgers frat parties to drink or travel over the Outerbridge to drink or buy booze to be brought back. Don't think that weed was very heavily used at the time. Fast forward to the early 70's, I was walking from my house to the town library and cutting across the back field of the high school while a gym class was in session. One of the younger kids I knew came over all giggly and told me he was stoned. I knew then that times had changed at the high school level.

I tried to look up scores. closest I could find was a win over West Orange in 65.

It was a one game series. WO played an out of area school every year back when I was there. One year it was Millville, one South Plainfield, and another more southern school that I can't remember.

Makes sense it was '65, my sophomore year. I was thinking the end of school year, not the Fall.

Two seniors, the QB & a Lineman from that team went to Penn State and played. During the Turkey Day rivalry with North Plainfield, they had to score three TDs in the later part of the game to win. During those years, Plainfield, North Plainfield and South Plainfield all fielded strong teams.

correct,, and later Rugby at RU. But...I still can't place you?? but sometimes I can't remember why I came into the room....lol
Always on the "B" side in SHS...1B thru 8B. Tall, uncoordinated & slowest kid on the playground. In 8th grade, a kid from the "A" side with the same name was put in 8B. He was a ladies man & I was a nerd/jock wannabe. Stepped up my game in high school to be a nerd/jock. Other kid went to St. Joes & I went to SPHS. Last three years of high school was all running sports all year.
