OT. Nasa thinks a small meteor may have triggered a Tsunami buoy off NJ

Pretty much everything that site puts out is malware-ridden clickbait for stupid Facebook users.

The likely cause is that the anchor cable was dragged by a submarine. A softball-size meteorite would not cause a 150' departure from sea level.

The buoy data are "real," as they're pulled from the National Data Buoy Center, but I don't follow buoys enough to know if it's some data glitch or not, plus, as you said there are many other possible explanations other than a meteorite.

I will say that anyone who believes much of what this guy Dahboo007 says is probably already wearing some tinfoil. He appears to be the leader for this "Underground World News" website, which I assume attracts the crack-pot conspiracy crowd.

Mystery solved - buoy was simply undergoing maintenance. They probably ought to turn off the data transmissions when buoys are undergoing maintenance. Or maybe not - gives the world the opportunity to expose more moronic yahoos, lol. Of course, the report below will just add the obligatory government cover-up angle to the story.

An ocean tsunami buoy off the New Jersey coast was undergoing maintenance when it triggered an "event mode" over the weekend, a federal government official said.

Buoy 44402, situated 130 nautical miles southeast of Fire Island, New York, registered a rapid ocean level drop around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to National Data Buoy Center data.

Then 15 seconds later, the ocean level rose to 180 feet.

But it wasn't due to an earthquake, meteor, or even a submarine, all of which the internet rumor mill generated since last night after a website reported the buoy data.

Rather, according to the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), the buoy was simply undergoing maintenance.

An NDBC spokesperson tells NewsWorks that the maintenance triggered the buoy into "event mode," which is consistent with the abnormal drop and rise in sea level near the buoy site.

As it turns out, the anomalous reading from the buoy was due to a maintenance procedure, per NOAA.

Do you have a link to your source? I believe you, but it's a big on Facebook.

Seriously?

The words "big on Facebook" have actual meaning to you?

Pretty much everything you see on Facebook is a lie. And while we're on the subject, nobody has any f*cks to give over What Kind of Dog You Would Be, or any of that other nonsense. When you click that shit, you're sending your personal data straight to China.

lol - the thing that actually cracks me up about all those FB info phishing surveys/quizzes is that no matter how big of a moron someone is, they somehow always end up scoring as an "expert" or "in the top 10%."

Those asinine quizzes have become my Facebook friend litmus test.

Amazing how 99% of the population is magically in the top 10% of every category on FB. The other good litmus test is people who ask you to play Candy Crush or any of the other games on FB...

You guys with your litmus tests. I've had every app or game on Facebook (but the built-ins) blocked since forever.

Anyway, I feel buoyed by the good news that I won't drown in a Tsunami. I mean, today. Probably.

National Data Buoy Center says the event was caused by routine maintenance on the buoy. No sub, no meteor, no wave.

I asked for a link to a source and I get unwanted lecture. Are this much of a jerk off in real life?

That was me. I went to two passover seders and ate for an army. Damned brisket goes through me like a nuke.My bad.

Ronnie - actually, no he's not, at least in the conversations I've had with him in real life, but on the board, let's just say he doesn't always have the most patience, especially when people ask questions that one wouldn't think they'd ask. I'll also add that it would've taken you 15 seconds to scan my post on this (which was before 4Real's, so it was pretty obvious, I think) to see the link I provided, debunking the meteorite "theory." But if you see him getting really riled up, just invoke his safe word, "perfluorooctanoic acid." :>)

@ruready4somefootball - you might want to change the thread title, since NASA never said or implied anything about a meteorite - that was all from the head kook at the conspiracy website I linked in my other post.

But if you see him getting really riled up, just invoke his safe word, "perfluorooctanoic acid." :>)

Ya know, I try and save you from Teflon Flu and this is the thanks I get. "Rediculed", as another of our rocket scientist posters would say.

C'mon, you had to have at least chucked a little bit. Also, I can slightly understand "rediculous" given the pronunciation, but am completely baffled at "rediculed."

NON-Event as a 150foot swing would have set off other buoys even miles away, if it was a real wave
More internet fodder.....IT WAS ALIENS

dude... you asked for a link to convince you that something you read on Facebook wasn't true.

I don't even know what else to say to that.

No, I asked for a link to convince other people it wasn't true, I already said I believe you. It was a simple request, no reason for you to be a prick to me over it.

Patience? For what? To paste a link to a sincere question? Or simply state you provided the link? All that deserves an unwarranted and unwanted lecture?

Momma Mia!!

And I love that our brilliant friend you speak of actually used it in a post where he was commenting about grammar
It shall live with reppin forever

And Ronnie- 4real isn't like that in real life useless you ask something stupid like that in real life hehehe

I assume you're addressing my post about the thread title. First off, how is posting the same link I did 8 hours ago adding anything? That source (the National Data Buoy Center, which is part of NOAA - the weather folks) says nothing about NASA registering any opinion on whether the buoy event might've been caused by a meteorite, which is the part of your thread title I said you should edit.

NASA would've never speculated about something like that without solid proof and certainly not so early in an investigation, because they realize events like this usually have a far simpler explanation (as per the scientific precept known as Occam's Razor - all things being equal, generally the simplest explanation is correct, which is why most conspiracy theories are crap), which ended up being the case here.
