OT: NCAA College Football Conference Championship Games Thread 12/1-12/2 Fri-Sat

Deboer has proven an excellent coach. Greg better be ready next September to step up our game.

Oregon Washington what a fun game to watch. All we heard for a month was how good Oregon was and how they would win the rematch
Good back and forth game. UW came out angry because of that, Oregon took the blows and came back from it to take the lead and then UW with their own fortitude wrestling the momentum back. Great game.

Pac commissioner hands off the trophy and runs offstage. Almost feel sorry for the guy.

If the games tommorow are as good as this it's going to be a great Saturday of football.

If fla state loses does osu jump back into the playoff as the 4 seed?
I think Texas would jump them with a win. They would have wins against CFP ranked KSU, Ok St and on the road against Alabama. OSU has ND and PSU. Texas loss is to Oklahoma and OSU is to Michigan.

Texas would have the conference championship in their belt as well.

it will be interesting to see what happens if both Texas and Alabama win. Also Texas lost to a two loss team. Osu lost to an unbeaten team. At least we will have some drama.

lol no...NO
he was shortsighted with adding teams, let an academic dictate what the monetary value of the conference would be and not the mkt. mkt said good bye, rest is history

The operative word in my post being almost. I thought his exit was hysterical.

Time consuming offense doesn't have to be boring and productive offense doesn't have to hold the ball for a long time either was demonstrated in last night's game.

This is from last week in the Apple Cup. 4th down on their side of the field, they went for it to close out the game against WSU

He’s not a river boat gambler but they don’t play scared.

Think about all on the line with that call. Tie game minute left and it would put WSU in FG range if you don’t get it. CFP on the line with that call.

Good article in the Athletic about DeBoer...echoes what I said. He's not one who gambles all the time like Lanning or McGuire but he won't play scared in big moments. I wouldn't have done what he did in the WSU game myself but he puts in on his best players backs and trusts them to come through.

From the article:

You know who never doubted Washington? DeBoer. That may seem obvious, but coaches doubt their teams all the time, and it comes through in their play calling. In late, tense moments, some coaches turtle up and play not to lose.

DeBoer’s mind doesn’t work that way.

In each of its two previous games — against Oregon State and Washington State — Washington faced a critical moment late when other coaches would have played conservatively, terrified of making an error or call that could cost their team the game. But DeBoer? He never forgets who his team is and lets it rip.

He did it against Oregon State, dialing up a play on a late third-and-3 that Michael Penix Jr. executed with a beautiful back-shoulder throw to convert the first down. Against Washington State last weekend, the Huskies went for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 29 with a minute and change remaining in a tie game. DeBoer called a perfect play that led to a 23-yard Odunze run to set up a game-winning field goal.

All three of these games were won with Washington’s offense on the field.

No passive play. No fear. No second-guessing. No hesitation.

“It isn’t even playing the percentages,” DeBoer said. “You want to let your best players win football games for you. When you have (Penix) and give him a chance to touch the football and make plays, he’s been through it all. He knows when to take the risk, when not to, how to put the team on his back and just keep moving. He’s the guy we’re going to let pull the trigger when we feel like we have a call.”

“I want to give these guys a chance to go win a football game,” DeBoer said. “Not play scared. Not play to just try to be close. … Play to win.”

According to message board geniuses here we must pay our coach more to win, and only Greg can win at Rutgers because he is from NJ.

Kalen is from South Dakota and makes $4.2 Million per year. 🤷‍♂️🙄
Initial contract was approx 3M or so and got bumped up to 4M or so and I'm sure will get bumped up again. Regardless, point is good coaches can come from anywhere and don't have to cost a lot. People too often tie money to effectiveness/productivity etc...it's helpful but if you use it unwisely it's just a wasted resource. You can still find effective solutions without having to spend a ton of money.

But just ask @rutgersal , Greg needs more money to coach better and be fairly paid.

I post a lot news, notes, stats etc.. about what's happening around CFB because it's my favorite sport and only sport I follow really. But the other part is to have better and more informed discussion on the board and bring people outside the RU bubble so they can see what's going out there and what's possible etc..If you don't follow anything beyond RU (or whatever team you follow for that matter), you won't be aware of what's happening and can be achieved.

You don't have to pay to attract a great coach, if you are willing to roll the dice.

However:
  1. You do have to pay to attract a PROVEN great coach, and
  2. You do have to pay to KEEP a great coach.

Thats the fallacy, that a coach is proven or a guarantee. Just about everyone isn’t.

Kelly was not proven in CFB when he went to UCLA? Everyone thought that was an awesome hire. Fisher at A&M, national champ coach. It’s always some level of crap shoot whether people realize it or not.

Right. So why pay so much ?

In other words, we don't have to pay our current coach any more than he his paid.
He is not a PROVEN great coach. He had a couple of good years in the early 2000's, one great year. 15 years of coaching, no conference championships. 86-95 lifetime record. That's not great. Don't think that is good either. Maybe he can make good, or even great. Time will tell.

Our coach is afraid to let the punt and kick returner return a punt. 😂

Having something like 13 5th year starters - if what I heard last night was correct - is a BIG help. Losing QB1 and, now, QB2 as well.
I missed that but okay. He was 10-2 last year as well and the team before he took over was 4-8. Having experience CAN help but experience doesn't help without accompanying development. You're just a year older lol.

I think they take a step back next year, you can only go down from 13-0 lol. But he has experience developing other qbs like I mentioned. Jake Haener was his qb at Fresno and was productive. He was actually a UW player who transferred early in his career to Fresno and was about to go back to UW to reunite with DeBoer but changed his mind. Instead Penix decided to reunite with DeBoer from his days at IU. So there's at least a track record of winning with and developing different qbs.

Actually kind of the same with Oregon. Will Stein their OC did a good job with Frank Wilson at UTSA and did well with Nix this year in his first year as OC at Oregon. So they may do okay replacing Nix too, we'll see.
