OT: NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships start tonight ESPN 2 at 8:30pm

You can watch the long jump on WatchESPN. Corey Crawford is up any second.

Crawford 4th in the LJ, first team AA
Griffith missed qualifying for the 400 finals by 1 spot at 9th place. He ran a great semi final coming from 6th to 3rd in the last 80 meters. Amazing that 45.81 doesn't get you in the finals!! He was 2nd team AA, nice season for him!
Mirabelli honorable mention AA in the jav at 17th place
4x400 was 15th at 3:05

Agreed. And that 3:05 in the 4x400 only gets you 15th. That's an average of 46.25 per runner.

I watched that race. After the first lap ( it looked liked RU passed the baton in third place or close to it) ,RU was completely outclassed. Would have liked to see them with their top 4, but don't think they would have qualified.

I dont know how you can say they were outclassed, they were 5th in their heat and only missed the finals by a 1/2 second. Even making it to Oregon is an accomplishment. I can guarantee we have less funding than any other team in that race.

Newell is right, our 4X400M team competed really well given the lack of funding and to be candid, depth we have in our sprint core. These other programs are light years ahead of us in terms of the number of bodies they can throw at the relays and short sprints. If Mulqueen can recruit some additional sprinters to build around Brown we'll have a shot to make the finals in the coming years in the 4X400M and build a reputable sprint unit.

Nice to see Crawford score points for us in the long jump, that will help us in the Director's Cup standings. I think we probably could have performed better in aggregate but getting 3 individuals and a relay team to the championships is a good building block for future championships.

Crawford and Brown are off to the Olympic Trials in the long jump and 400M; will be great to see how they perform against the pros.

Would we ever have football players competing on the track team? One thing the SEC was known for (especially Florida) was having world class runners that competed in both (Demps, Rainey, etc.). I remember the story when Will Hill was at Florida. In addition to football, Hill was a track star at St. Peters Prep. At Florida, they ran competitive sprints after football practice once a week. Hill could never even crack the top 5 - 1 or 2 LB's would regularly beat him. Talk about team speed.

There are always SEC football players competing in the NCAA 100 and hurdles. I think the last football player we had on the track team was Joe Porter. When I ran in the 80's we had a couple guys, Boris Pendergrass and Reynold Walbrook. I'm not sure what Ash's philosophy is on doing both but it would be nice to see some of them out there.

Not sure how finishing 5 th out of 8 or 14 out of 24 is all that noteworthy. Bottom half. I guess being the second fastest 5th qualifier is something. But If it was a horse race, I would have ripped up my ticket after the second baton pass. With Brown in there, they would have finished higher.. Qualifying was great and running with the big boys is a huge step in developing the program. Hopefully better days are ahead.

BTW, I didn't realize that SJA got DQed . What happened? Their anchor closed like the wind.

Joe Porter was a teammate when I ran at RU. I too hope that Ash is open to football players being eligible for track if

RU Husky - What are you talking about? Brown ran the relay. They outperformed their seed time. Did they run the fastest time or win a national title? No. But decades of lack of funding, poor facilities and poor conference association will not win you a title overnight. Did you expect we would beat LSU who has the 3rd fastest time in the WORLD this year in the 4X400M and has had a fully funded and successful program for decades?

If your expectation is that we should have magically won, I suggest you re calibrate expectations or root for a different program. This is Rutgers, we're trying to undo centuries of incompetence in the athletic department.

You have to crawl before you can walk before you can sprint.

The NCAA meet is basically a semifinal race just to get there. There are 274 D1 schools that have a track team, to make it in the top 15 out of 274 I would say is a noteworthy accomplishment. Like RUBeta said we are competing against schools with a long history of being fully funded and consistently these teams bring a dozen runners to the NCAA. The fact that our 4x400 even qualified is a HUGE accomplishment. They were 1/2 second away from making the finals for christs sake.

Heck no, didn't expect them to win their heat or even qualify., but I'll be sure to keep my expectations even lower next time. BTW, It seems like they were slightly over a second from qualifying in an event measured in thousandths of a second ( not half a second). Regardless, there were 6 teams ahead of them for the last qualifying spot. But they did beat a host of other schools that must fund better as well and yes getting there was a HUGE accomplishment.
Don't know why I said that about Brown, I knew he ran.

Which comes first? The funding or the results?

Go Hogs!
