OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

Agree completely- the guy is amazing...and if it was a Judge type contract, maybe. But 500+ mil - OH HELL NO
no salary cap and the richest owner in the sport... our biggest needs being DH, starting pitcher, and a face of the franchise that casts a shadow over the Yankees. The apparel sales globally would make up for the extra costs. And then imagine winning a championship with him.

Mets tried to sneak Penn Murfee through waivers and were unsuccessful. Claimed by Atlanta. So the roster stays at 33. It will no doubt be further reduced by Friday when some ARB guys get non-tendered. (Zat you, Vogey?)

Roster space is being created - but for whom?

I think I would rather split that money up elsewhere. T. Hernandez, M Chapman? Heck- maybe even try to bring Conforto back. And then use the remainder on pitching.
And leave some room to go big for our current face of the franchise.

The 40 man roster now sits at 27. Twenty-seven! That is some serious roster churn at the back end.

Now let's see what happens at the front end.

HYPOTHETICALLY - If the Mets were to open the season with the roster as it currently stands, it would look like this: (Note: This assumes that Acuna and Ramirez open the season in the minors, and Peterson opens on the IL.)

LINEUP:
Nimmo - CF
Mauricio - 2B
Lindor - SS
Alonso - 1B
McNeil - LF
Marte - RF
Alvarez - C
Stewart - DH
Baty - 3B

BENCH:
Narvaez
Short
Vientos
Somebody else

STARTING PITCHING:
Senga
Quintana
Megill
Lucchesi
Butto

RELIEF PITCHING:
Diaz
Raley
Smith
Bickford
Hartwig
Garrett
Walker
Somebody else

This roster ain't gonna get it done. However, we may rest assured that help is on its way!

😥 😥😥
Guillorme too.

The Mets additionally non-tendered righties Sam Coonrod, Jeff Brigham and Trevor Gott.

Among the no-brainers, the Mets extended contracts to Pete Alonso and lefties David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi.

They also extended a contract to righty Drew Smith, which seemed like an iffy call, as well as agreeing to a one-year contract with outfielder DJ Stewart, who will make $1.38 million

Don't cry too hard tonight! Glad we can get that bad contrarian view of yours out early.

Well I'm not blaming everything on him so that's a start.
I'm not blaming you for blaming him, and for the record, that was my point all season long. He was a symptom of a larger problem, no pun intended. But people got upset when I posted celebrating his successes. Peace and onward, upward. LFGM.

I am not against the Met's letting Vogey go- he is not a player of need for us. But- the guy did play hard for us and did what was asked of him.
While I understand fans being upset he took up a spot on the roster and could only do 1 single thing but again, how he was treated by fans is unfair to him. Over his 2 years- his "stats" are above MLB average in pretty much every single category. And, he was cheap.
My gut tells me- he is not even near the reasons we sucked last year.

Good move to let him go but no need to pile on him, it is more of a negative on our front office more than the player.

I did not stick around to watch the train wreck this year and don't know what to think about Guillorme, but the NY Post made a case that he was expendable.

He is expendable. Without question.

He is a glove-first utility infielder with no power, below average speed, and cannot play OF (so not a true utility man). Those guys are easy to find.

The first free agent domino has fallen. Aaron Nola has reportedly re-upped with Philly, 7 years, $172M.

This sets a floor for Yamamoto.

Philly overpaid.
he is interesting- he has had a solid career but really only 3 years above average- he does eat a ton of innings though. Not sure if 25 per year is a great deal for Philly but he also won't hurt them. Safe move

Yamamoto has been posted.

Signed Cole Sulser to a minor league deal with an invite to camp.

Braves make yet another very good signing adding Reynaldo Lopez to their pen for 3 years $30 million.

All I know about the Braves is that they traded 5 players for a reliever that had an ERA over 6. If that had been us this place would be on fire. And rightfully so.

On the back end of the starting pitcher market, Cardinals sign Lance Lynn, 1 year $10M, with an extra $3M in incentives. Club option for 2nd year at $11M.

Lindor makes good on his promise to buy McNeil a car for winning the batting title in 2022. A brand new Ford Bronco. Let this good vibe carry over to spring training!
