Actually, I don't think they are easy to find. LG played defense at a high level for a backup. Every guy the Mets attempted to use as a replacement for him we hyped to have all the qualities Doc said, but failed to meet any of them. I think LG is the scapegoat for other issues on the team. LG was the low-hanging fruit.He is expendable. Without question.
He is a glove-first utility infielder with no power, below average speed, and cannot play OF (so not a true utility man). Those guys are easy to find.
If we are talking expendable, it starts with the relievers, but that was never addressed. I bet if the Mets' bullpen held up their end of the bargain, we are not talking about LG. Also, the call-ups to replace LG when he was hurt didn't exactly set the world on fire or make us forget LG. If backups had the qualities Doc spelled out, they wouldn't be backups. They would be starters on someone's roster. 🤣
