OT: New York Mets 2023-2024 Off Season Thread

Actually I take it back. Passan saying Counsell may not go back to Milwaukee either.

Counsell going to a team that already has a manager so someone is getting fired soon.

Mets have hired Carlos Mendoza.

Counsell wanted to remain with the Brewers.
Counsell is reportedly going to the Cubs, which if true came out of nowhere.

Adam Ottavino opts out of his deal with the Mets and will now be a FA. That is a bit of a surprise.

Is it really a bad thing? For every strong outing, there is a stinker. I don't think I can take another slider that starts out of the strike zone and ends up 4 feet off the plate. Plus, he up there is age.

Just one more arm we need to sign. You knew what you were getting from Ottavino and goal was to push him down a bit. Not great but also not terrible.

If Ottavino just became a piece of the bullpen and not relied on to be the closer or setup guy, I would have been ok with him staying.

Mets 40 Man roster is now at 33:

GUARANTEED CONTRACTS (9)
Diaz
Lindor
Marte
McNeil
Narvaez
Nimmo
Quintana
Raley
Senga

ARBITRATION ELIGIBLE (12)
Alonso
Bickford
Brigham
Coonrod
Gott
Guillorme
Lucchesi
Peterson
Reid-Foley
Smith
Stewart
Vogelbach

PRE-ARBITRATION (12)
Acuna
Alvarez
Baty
Butto
Garrett
Hartwig
Mauricio
Megill
Murfee
Short
Vientos
Walker

The two upcoming key dates are:

NOVEMBER 14 - Deadline to make tender offers to arbitration players. No doubt some of the 12 will not receive offers.

NOVEMBER 17 - Deadline to add rookies to the 40 man to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Will be interesting to see who is protected and who is exposed.

Cot's Contracts did an interesting analysis of the Mets roster. They assumed that the 9 contract guys and the 12 ARB guys would all be back. They added in 5 minimum salary guys for a hypothetical opening day roster. Then they added in a shit-ton of dead money, and came up with a hypothetical opening day salary total of $242 M. That is before adding one dollar of additional salary in free agents and trades.

At $242M, the Mets would have been already over the 2023 luxury tax threshold.

How much is Uncle Steve willing to spend?

David Peterson is having hip surgery which will sideline him 6-7 months. Probably back around the ASB is my best guess.

Bob Nightingale of USA Today is reporting that Yamamoto is the Mets #1 target. He says that the Mets are resigned to the fact that they have no realistic chance of landing Ohtani.

I would much rather get Yamamoto- While we all have to respect SO- he will not be pitching this year and he is 100% a DH...
I would rather spend 200 mil on a starting pitcher and have the other 300 mil to fill in the holes we need to fill.

Curious from some of you- What are the thoughts after 2023 on the kids we brought up-
Alvarez is obviously our starting Catcher in 2024 and beyond.
Baty/Vientos ??????? Give them 2024 and almost be relying on them or dangle them in a trade?
Mauricio - what is he?

Deadline today at 6 PM to get placed on the 40 man so they can't be selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Granted SO is a special player. I would not spend the amount to get him for a pitcher coming off Tommy John plus having to miss a year and a DH.

The "no realistic chance" is based on the assumption that he won't leave the West Coast which then was followed by articles that he's intrigued with Boston, Atlanta, and Chicago, as well as another that the Mets will be leading contenders in going after both him and Yamomoto due to Cohen having the deepest pockets. All BS reporting as always until things actually start rolling. Bottom line will be the money combined with where he feels he fits... every single team in the majors would like him on their roster, he's a GOAT level two-way player in his prime with unmatched international marketing star-power.
