OT: New York Mets 2024-2025 Off Season Thread

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com yesterday defined the market for Alonso's services as "eerily quiet". Apparently no one is willing to meet his price, at least not yet.

What might that price be? As we know, last year Alonso reportedly turned down 7 years for $158M. He played out his final ARB year at $20.5M. Therefore, to get value equivalent to what he turned down, he'd need 6 years for $137.5M. Feinsand postulates that Alonso views this as his negotiating floor. I doubt he has gotten any offers in that ballpark yet.

Alonso : 5 years / 125 mil. Get it done !

Mets probably bidding against themselves !

But I don’t care !

Think it’s known Boras is trying to find highest bid then Pete will ask Mets to match and they will

So whats the point in making an offer to Pete
There’s no market for Pete. Mets could wait forever for an offer for them to match.

Deal needs to get done for Mets and if Pete or Boras balks - then Mets need to move on and get another 1b

Astros did the same with Bregman

Astros wanted Bregman to come back. He balked / refused and Astros went after Arenado albeit Unsuccessfully as of now.

Have to disagree. He could be a priority but as always the price has to be right.
I agree. Let’s say Pete is a priority and Cohen is also a huge Mets fan. He is also a pretty smart guy.
This could be playing out in a way where they are ok with Pete going out there to shop for his 1 big career payday. And all along letting Pete set his own market and then come in as good guys with an offer that is a little better.
I doubt that they are just sitting there and not in contact with Boras every day.
It makes too much sense for both Pete and the Met’s to make this happen. Steve will give him the best deal or match his best offer. Pete at 1B/DH and Vientos at 3B is what the Met’s need for the next 3-5 years. Pete makes a ton of money off the field, he ends up in the Met’s HOF and number retired and a favorite Met forever.
Also, for Pete, with Soto on the team and the lineup Nimmo, Soto, Lindor, Pete, Vientos- dude is going to have guys on base and protection behind him that he may not have somewhere else.

That is possible. That is how they handled the Nimmo negotiations, whom they did sign. It is also how they handled the deGrom negotiations, whom they did not.

There are different levels of priority. Pete is clearly not at the level of Lindor, Diaz, or Soto. Mets were willing to have someone else swoop in and blow him away. Doesn't look like anyone will.

No way to know what they are thinking…we are all just fans playing GM.
Last offseason- I didn’t trust Stearns but it seemed what he did last year did work.
But, we just signed the big fish, and this lineup looks like complete crap even with him and Lindor in it, if we don’t have Pete at 1B and hitting 4th.
We don’t have a stud SP and our BP is still a mess.
Why sign Soto and you are going to follow it up with projects?

And he shouldn’t be. If he falls to the Mets at the right price, fine, but he needs a reality check.
So, he ummmmm, does need to be a priority. And no reason for anyone to feel good if he has to be humbled. Pete has been a great Met, bleeds our colors and just a great ambassador for us.
Why he IS a priority. Because I don't see a team that can win without him or someone of his caliber at the plate.
Nimmo, Soto, Lindor, Vientos, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck just can't win
Put Pete between Lindor and Vientos and it becomes so much better. Like night and day.

What is the plan without Pete? Baty? And who on the FA market is still available that would be better and who would be less expensive?

I’d rather have Bregman at 3rd and Vientos at first, or just plug someone in until Vlady is available next year. players like Alonso don’t age well and he wants too many years. Again, I’d be fine with him for the next couple of years and at the right price since I’d rather spend elsewhere…but $ probably is no object anyway. I couldn’t care less about bleeding any colors since it’s a business and I just want to win. However, If he truly bled orange and blue, he’d take less years and agree to what he’s worth. No one is knocking his doors down to sign him.

My fear is Brett Baty is our next Justin Turner, am I way off base on this?

I would be ok with Bregman but...
First- Bregman is most likely going to cost more.

And while you talk of Alonso not aging well...have you by chance followed Bregman's production outside of 2018 and 2019? He hasn't had a single better year than Pete, not even last year. Yes, better fielder but it looks more like Bregman is aging worse than Pete.

Perhaps but there’s a longer life for an excellent defensive 3rd baseman (who is in shape). I’m afraid 3 years into Pete’s his contract, and we have Vogelbach 2.0 (only righty)

Goldschmidt to Yankees, 1 year, 12.5M. The thin market for Alonso's services is now thinner.

If the Mets strategy is to wait the market out and then re-sign Alonso on the cheap, looks like they may be successful.

maybe not on the cheap, but I could see something like 25 Mil per year over four years or five years, but opt out after two.

It looks like Vlady is close to signing with the Blue Jays, and if he doesn't the contract, he turned down is rumored to be over $500 million.

It seems Pete is being boxed in to a contract far less than what Boras promised him. Even if the Mets get what they want in having Pete's value more inline with what they think he's worth, do you do a home grown player, who bleeds Blue & Orange, that way? I'm not saying overpay him, but give him a bone a little better than what you would now that you have him backed into a corner. You can create bad blood not only with Pete, but other players within the organization as they do talk.

Maybe his issue should be with him instead of the Mets?

The original offer wasn't chump change.

Why is the narrative of Pete being fat or out of shape so much a conversation? In 2024- he looked to be in the best shape of his career. He is just a big man but far from fat.

it must be me but I cringed when he was clogging up the base paths but it’s more about the history of 1st basemen his size and the rapid decline a lot of them experience when they hit their 30s. I just wonder if 2024 is the beginning of it. I’d like a short-term contract but I doubt that will happen.

Pete doesn’t clog up the base paths.

The fact that the options are running low and Pete is a proven commodity that can play in NY, you need to sign him ASAP. As someone else pointed out, the lineup beyond Soto and Lindor isn't great without him there. Plus, you need to compete with a healthy Braves team, the Phils and Dodgers. You have to do something and not nickel and dime him.

Activity in the first baseman market:

Diamondbacks replace Christian Walker by acquiring Josh Naylor in a trade with the Guardians.

Guardians replace Naylor by signing free agent Carlos Santana.

What this means for Alonso is uncertain.

Weird - apparently we are talking to Bregman mlr

and apparently we continue to show interest in Bregman. Strange.
I mean other than the Cubs, where does Alonso go except us?
Is signing Bregman and Alonso a possibility, then moving Vientos to DH?
