OT: NY Jets 2020 Season Thread

Craig Carton reported on air yesterday that Chris Johnson has already informed Gase that he will be fired after Sunday's game.

Could never figure out the Gase hire. Was not impressive at Miami. As we have seen in the past few years, new coach usually equals new QB. Interesting to see Darnold's value in a trade.

Not true. Had the Jets lost yesterday, they would still be in contention for the #1, needing a Jags loss next week.

The Jags are not beating the Colts this week. In fact, once the Jets beat the Rams there was no way the Jags were winning either of their last 2 games. So, the Jets might as well go ahead and win out.

What the Jets saw in Gase is well-documented. They saw an offensive guru. Specifically, a QB whisperer who would mold Sam Darnold into a Hall of Famer. To quote Chris Johnson at the time, "To paraphrase Wayne Gretsky, he's coaching to where football is going."

The final tipping point in the Gase hire was an endorsement by Peyton Manning, who was coached by Gase in Manning's twilight years in Denver. It worked about as well as Bill Walsh's endorsement of Terry Shea.

I don't think it's a given that Darnold is headed out. But if he is, I think we'll find that his trade value is zero. As in if the Jets put him on waivers, he would go unclaimed. Then somebody would sign him knowing that the Jets are paying his salary. Think Levean Bell. Why would anyone give up any assets for Darnold, who obviously is a reclamation project, knowing that if they do turn him around he could immediately leave in free agency?

The Jets have backed themselves into a corner with Darnold. You can't get Lawerence from Clemson in the draft, nor should they while they continue to have issues with the OL. What the Jets should do now is build around Darnold. He has shown enough to merit his stay. It's the rest of the team that needs to be upgraded. Get the tackle from Oregon and create bookends with last year's tackle. Sign a top-flight OL ' in free agency because you'll have the most cap space of any team. Next, add a true pass-rush specialist and WR1 with the next two picks. The specialist would help Williams on the DL and ease pressure on the secondary.

You're not going to change the results overnight, but at least you are creating a foundation. Other areas the Jets need improvement is at RB, LB, and CB. Free-agency may not be the answer, considering how the Jets have failed the last few years at those positions. Not sure how they should address these problems. Last, have a creative play-caller on offense. With Gleeson, we saw how changing the way the game is called can improve the team instantly.

And as well as Barry Alvarez's recommendation of hiring Chris Ash

+1
Stupid decision by a stupid "owner" (as in, brother of the owner).

I would have understood the Gase hiring if he would have time in between, after his Dolphins, possibly going back and re-establishing himself as a successful OC. His hiring immediately after his firing by the Dolphins was equivalent to picking up somebody's else trash. An AWFUL hiring made by completely incompetent Ownership and Management. Par for the course with this franchise. They make being a fan a miserable experience year after year.

Gase never even played college ball, and he was a benchie in HS.

He reminds me of a quote I heard from an FBI agent talking about Don King. "A good con man can con you even when you know you're being conned"

Lawrence returns to Clemson after this whooping to chase another title. Fields goes to Jags at #1, Jets end up with nada.

Not that it was in any doubt, but BYU's Zach Wilson, a possible Jet target, announced tonight that he is entering the draft.

i saw Fields vs Indiana and he was terrible that game. Didn't Darnold throw for like 400 yards vs Penn State in the Rose Bowl? yeah Darnold had 453 yards passing and 5 touchdowns.

I want no part of Fields at #2. Take the OT out of Oregon. He’s actually the most ready player in the entire draft, including Lawrence.

As great as Manning, Elway and even Luck were, they won exactly 1 SB in their primes. Of course I’d take Lawrence if he was available but even if we did there’s a lot more work that needs to be done on the Jets. Build it correctly...

Can't put the blame for the lack of SB on the QB. There are 52 other guys who play a role in the outcome of games.

Gase is "down the road" as my coach used to say

Hopefully Johnson & Johnson will concentrate on producing their vaccine, and will leave the mundane matter of running the Jets to the professionals.

Belichick played lacrosse in college.

He played football too (Wesleyan). He was a center and TE

I see him as an in-the-box type safety, a la Jamal Adams.

I love all our RU guys but you can't put Bless Austin and Jamal Adams in the same discussion. It's an All Pro player and a guy who's barely holding on to a NFL job. As a Jet fan I can only hope we can talk about them in the same breath some day.

Sure I can. I think Austin can be the same TYPE player as Adams. Not implying that they have equal levels of proficiency.

Cimini reporting that Douglas will make coaching hire recommendation, Chris Johnson will make final decision. Not sure where Woody fits in.

Woody is coming back from his Ambassadorship soon. He will be involved with decisions. Chris Johnson is the person who should be removed from any decision-making process in fact, neither Johnson should be involved.

Well, that means another bad hire.
Not necessarily. Douglas is not going to make this hire and have Johnson hear about it for the first time on his Twitter feed. Obviously ownership makes the final decision. The question is whether it will just be a rubber-stamp, as I hope it will.

Yes, this the hire that will define Douglas’ tenure as a GM, so it should mostly come down to his decision.

One thing for sure, which RU fans also know well by now, if a HOF coach or player calls the Jets to personally recommend someone they have worked with for the job, hang up the phone!

Douglas On the Clock. Knowing this franchise they'll find a way to make a bad hire, blow all these draft picks and waste more FA money. Bad Ownership = Incompetent Front Office = Losing Year After Year. Maybe one day they'll get lucky.

If you call that that college football. He played tougher competition his PG year at Andover.

Only 7% of high school players get on a college team at any level. Gase never did it and Bill did. The results speak for themselves

You need to start paying attention.

Their GM Douglas had a very solid reputation in the scouting community and looks to have started with a real good 2020 draft. Trading Adams (instead of paying a safety huge money) to get a ton of draft assets was exactly the move to make. He didn’t pick Gase, and is likely to make a better choice now that it is his coaching hire.
