OT: Official 2021 NY Mets Season Thread

The Mets' fate may be decided in August when they play 13 straight vs the Dodgers and the Giants.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia has seven games against Arizona, 4 against Colorado, and 3 against Baltimore.
Philadelphia plays Dodgers 3 times, and none against San Francisco.

Mets are 8-5 against the Phillies. 6 more games in the second half.

On Rocker:

- There are questions about him.

- Royals and Angels at 7 and 9 took pitchers ahead of Rocker. They obviously had their reasons.

- The Questions about Rocker:

1. His velocity dipped this year
2. Questions about his mechanics which Major Leaguers can pickup
3. Sub par College Playoff / World Series

Hope he turns out to be a stud and I hope the hype doesn't outweigh the results.

No doubt we needed to take care of our business in this stretch of games in order to give ourselves a little better cushion in the standings. Having said that I didn't have Philly winning their series at Boston either.

A POSSIBLE explanation for his slippage (I have no idea) is that Team Rocker wanted overslot money which the Royals and Angels were unwilling to provide.

The same thing was reported during the draft. If there is one thing we should not have to worry about now its money. Wilpons would have passed on the kid for that reason.

A big question these days may be: Did he have his Tommy John Surgery yet? Might sound stupid but who knows, esp when pitchers come back from this clocking at 98+ like nothing.

It will be interesting to see how the trade deadline shakes out. Cohen has said he is either staying under the lux tax cap or blowing past it. Mets have about 10 million to play with before they have to pay the tax. This team could use a power bat, a starter who can eat up innings and some additional bull pen help.

The starter problem may be solved if Carrasco is available right after the break. A rotation of Jake, Carrasco, Stroman, Walker and Megill is strong enough to win this division although Megill needs to be more efficient pitch wise and start being able to contribute 6 innings at a stretch.

The bull pen is starting to concern me due to overuse early in the season. Using Loup as the opener hurt later on the game as Pittsburg just kept sending lefties up in the late innings and we had no counter. So a second lefty for the pen would be quite helpful against the Soto's and Harpers we face.

Another power bat at 3B is going to be a necessity, especially someone who can field as well. I know a lot of folks are down on Kris Bryant but he would come here with a .271 BA, 16 HR, 46 RBI and 352 OBP stat line. Those number put him just behind Alonso for HR's and RBI's. He also can field. We don't need him long term, only as a rental as Baty is coming on and should be ready next year or in 2023.

The Cubs are open for business. Three Cubs I would be interested in would be Bryant, Hendricks and Kimbrel. Assuming the Mets can only trade for one my choice would be Kimbrel. 20 saves, an ERA of 0.57 and a WHIP of 0.66. Although not a lefty, a backend of Lugo, Kimbrel and Diaz combined with our starting pitching might be the ticket to a successful division run and post season. Also keeping him away from the Phils who need BP help would be an added benefit.
I would give up Maurico, Petersen and cash to get it done. The only two prospects that to me are untouchable are Baty and Alvarez.

Not a chance Carrasco is available right after the break. I'd say the end of month is a possibility as he's definitely gonna need a rehab stint. Agree on the lefty and more bullpen help in general. Don't forget left-handed batters Schwarber, Freeman and Gregorius who always seems to hurt us. The problem is that there are so many teams that will be after the same thing.

Rated #123 on mlb.com. This feels to me like a below-slot guy, on whom we are saving some coin which will be used for Rocker.
Agree with this. Seems like he has some projectability and possibly under scouted because he is from Canada. Seems like a good pick where we can save some money but could also develop into a good SP.

Money is ALWAYS an issue in the mlb draft. You have a finite pool of money available for your first 10 selections, each of which is assigned a slot value. If you go over slot value on your early picks (as the Mets apparently did) you have to make it up later. Conversely, if you save money early, you have more to spend later.

In fairness to Wilpon and his sidekick BVW, they won acclaim for their handling of prior mlb drafts. Specifically how they got Matt Allan in the third round, who had slipped because he was considered unsignable. The Mets paid him first round money, which they made possible by scrimping later in the draft.

Jim Henderson who?
Henderson is his last name. Pitched for the Mets WAY back in 2016.

I have exactly one memory of him, which is exactly one more than you have. Remember the Asdrubal Cabrera bat flip game? Henderson was the winning pitcher. One of my ten favorite Met games attended in person.

Carrasco to make a rehab start on Thursday. Will pitch 2 or 3 innings at an affiliate to be determined.
