OT: Official 2021 NY Mets Season Thread

My hope in 2024 or so are that Allan and Rocker are a dynamic 1-2 punch with Degrom and Thor being the old chisled vets.......sort of like Dodgers with Kershaw / Bauer as the grizzly vets and Buehler / Urias as the young guns

The difference between the HR derby screwing up David but not Pete is that David’s game was driving line drives to right center field. Pete needs this HR swing back.
I also think we may have learned that David’s back may have even played a part in it as well.

Now that Pete has proclaimed himself the best power hitter in the game I expect nothing less than 25 homers after the break. Of course there are no high fastballs in the HR derby.
Mets need another power bat in the lineup to protect / compliment Alonso. Buster Olney said he foresees Trevor Story going to either Mets; Yankees or White Sox.

If Mets acquire Story, he'd play 2B.

How the Conforto situation may play out:

Boras to Mets: Sign Mike to a long term contract and I will ensure my clients come to your team.....

Boras knows Cohen will spend......

I haven’t looked it up but does anyone know Story’s numbers outside of Coors? The fact he had to pull everything in Coors field worries me.
And while “new” baseball doesn’t mind K’s, the guy averages 190 per 162 games.
I would see a .270 15 HR guy at best playing 81 games at City. And he will want at least 25 mil per year

Alonso defended his Derby title. Dave Jaust should get half his prize for throwing perfect pitches so that Alonso could absolutely crush. Those two perfected their plan while others were just there throwing whatever.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t affect his swing in the second half.

Actually, for the self-proclaimed best power hitter in baseball, he had kind of a meh first half. So maybe I hope it does affect his swing.

He can't handle fastballs that are up or don't allow him to get his arms extended. If he makes contact on them at all it's usually a pop-up or ground ball to an infielder. Also can't lay off pitches breaking low and away out of the strike zone. I'm sure every team's scouting report has identified those holes by now. But belt high, middle of the plate or away he can hammer all day as demonstrated last night.

Money is ALWAYS an issue in the mlb draft. You have a finite pool of money available for your first 10 selections, each of which is assigned a slot value. If you go over slot value on your early picks (as the Mets apparently did) you have to make it up later. Conversely, if you save money early, you have more to spend later.

In fairness to Wilpon and his sidekick BVW, they won acclaim for their handling of prior mlb drafts. Specifically how they got Matt Allan in the third round, who had slipped because he was considered unsignable. The Mets paid him first round money, which they made possible by scrimping later in the draft.
I think Rocker is worth skimping in later rounds. Lets hope he proves it on the field.

I would rather have Bryant than Story on a rental. Bryant solves the 3B problem for the rest of the year and I prefer McNeil at 2B. An infield of Bryant, Lindor, McNeil and Polar Bear has great offensive potential and will provide very good D.

One other thing regarding Bryant, he has won a championship. Someone who has been there before and won can provide a little leadership to this group. I like Lindor and he has his own style of leadership, but it seems like he is hosting a chamber of commerce meeting with the opponents at 2B. Maybe Bryant is not any different but he does have a WS win under his belt.

Still want to compare Voit and Alonso? Get back to me when Voit hits 53 dingers and gets invited, let alone wins 2 HR Derby's. I didn't want to post it in that stupid thread that's fallen further than that other baseball thread, so I figured it should be in a thread that is actually read.https://nypost.com/2021/07/12/mets-pete-alonso-shatters-home-run-derby-record-just-wow/
The Voit/Alonso comparison is a joke. A fairer comparison might have been Alonso/Judge based strictly on hitting.

MLB draft is such a crap shoot. So- if you are in the top 10 picks and can get a guy that was actually projected in the top 5 or so- you do it at any cost.
What I do like- and this goes back to the dysfunctional Met's management- we have stolen some very good players in the draft over the past few years. Our barren system all of a sudden have some potential stars in it.

Maddog of (Mike & Maddog) MLB's High Heat dropped a few nuggets that most of you would love to go away. The commissioner seems to agree with the players association changes are need and coming to MLB. On the table for discussion is the removal of 7-inning double-hitters, banning the shift, and a baserunner at second to start extra innings.

I’m okay with 7 inning double headers. What we did on college. I’m good either way.

On shift, players should just learn to beat it.
Starting runner on 2nd in extra innings should go. I’m used to it from tournament softball. There it is needed to keep tournament on schedule. If you want to keep it at least move it to start 13th or 15th inning.

I would be shocked if the 7 inning doubleheader is discontinued. The players are not going back to 18 inning days, and the owners won't care enough to fight them on it.

The free runner rule is interesting. The purpose of the rule is to end marathon games, which no one likes. While I don't have the stats on this, it certainly appears that the rule has achieved its objective. It's here, and I don't see either side ready to go to the mats to get rid of it.

I have absolutely no clue as to whether the shift will be banned.

Agreed 100%

And of course I'm fine with leaving all this stuff. DH in NL please.

Shift ... must have 2 infielders on each side of second base. SS or 2B must have at least one foot even with bag.

relief pitchers ...you’re ready or you’re not ,2-3 pitches , no commercial break

DH ....mets current roster and new financial situation the DH helps them more than almost any team even with some of their pitchers hitting abilities
