Wow. That elbow thrust into a pitch right over the plate reeks of desperation. I say that play becomes reviewable in 2022.
I'm not so sure. (About the second sentence, not the first.) The rule is that the batter must attempt to get out of the way. That's a judgment call. In all sports, the rulemakers are hesitant to make judgment calls reviewable.

Conforto really needs to stop thinking at the plate and be aggressive. I wasn't able to see the game but was following it online so was able to see that he took the first 2 pitches for strikes before the game ended on the HBP. Use the damn bat. Did he not see how many times the Philthies hurt us on 1st pitches? You know the pitcher doesn't want to fall behind you in that spot so be ready to strike.

This week,I predicted a memorable Mets' ending for this game:My reasoning that I was using the same surgeon for today's hernia operation that I had used for my gallbladder removal on 9-21-01,the day that Piazza hit the home run.

Listening to the postgame, that was weirder than I thought. Sounds like the HBP could have been overruled for either of two reasons:
  • If the ump rules the player made no attempt to get out of the way. Judgment call and not reviewable. OR,
  • If the pitch was in the strike zone, regardless of the batter's intent. That is what Duquette thought happened, Conforto was badly fooled by the pitch and did not try to get hit.
The second bullet point is the strange one. The umpire clearly was about to call the pitch a strike. He should have stayed with the call.

Duquette, imo, is pretty clearly incorrect. Saw the ball coming, stuck out his elbow.

If I understand the explanation of the rule correctly, I would not be surprised if Mattingly protests the game. And I would not be surprised if he wins it.

A protest is only successful if it is determined that the umpires misapplied the rules. I think they did. The key is that the home plate umpire appeared to be in the process of calling the pitch a strike. If so, then it's strike three, regardless of whether it hits the batter and regardless of the batter's intent.

Of course, if the umpire tells the Commissioner's office that he wasn't calling the pitch a strike, then the call must stand.

Hope you feel better. Any chance you can line up 100 more surgeries for this season?

Conforto and or McNeil may get drilled on Saturday. At least they would when I was growing up

Conforto needs to grow some balls and be aggressive at the plate. You have a struggling pitcher who threw lollipops and conforto should have been swinging with first pitch

We always catch no breaks so I can give 2 damns how we won!

Was very impressed with Walker on the field and off the field

Shame on Sandy for not improving bullpen when Lugo got hurt

Thigh I am not a Nido fan, I’m surprised he has yet to play. I hope we don’t regret the McCann contract.

Home plate umpire Ron Kulpa has admitted he blew the call. He should have called Conforto out on strike three, regardless of Conforto's intent.

I guess that is what you call a "Mea Kulpa"?

Sounds like Kulpa misapplied the rule. I would have thought that would be grounds for the Marlins to protest the game. Obviously I'm wrong on that, since the Marlins haven't done so. I'm sure they would if they could.

Agree. as much as I hate to say it and Rojas can be the scapegoat, this team is not likely going anywhere. We are going to be sellers sooner than we think. We can get a huge haul for DeGrom, McNeil, Mcann. We probably can get something for Conforto, Diaz, Alonso, Dom Smith, etc. Rebuild around Lindor and in 3-4 years, we can be ready with a less flawed team.

Stop posting. And go do some research on baseball.
That's a really terrible take on the team.

One thing lost in all the craziness is the performance of the bullpen. Three innings, one hit, no runs. Is it too early to say the bullpen has been fixed? Of course it is. Way too early.

Just as it's way too early to say it hasn't.

Me? Him? Or the people that voted for him? Two out of 3 looks good for me,

So the the media in NY buried Willie Randolph's career because he played the race card, so they say, when his moves were criticized. That was back when it wasn't the thing to do, using race to make your case. Today, they'd name a street after him! I always thought Willie was a good manager and deserved a 2nd chance somewhere. So many retreads have gotten 2nd and 3rd chances, but not Willie. I'd take Willie in a heartbeat over the last 2 losers we've suffered with as Mets fans.

We got lucky but a W is a W.

Conforto or McNeil getting HBP Sat for sure.
Ten years ago, yes. Now, IDK. Umps may give both managers a pregame warning. Anybody gets drilled, your pitcher gets run, as do you.

I remember being at the first Met-Dodger game of 2016. First inning, Noah Syndergaard pitching to Chase F'n Utley. First pitch sails over Utley's head. Noah gets run. I wound up paying to see Logan Verrett. Needless to say the Mets didn't win that game.

Well, I guess I'm in good company. I just went and counted at least 10 different people you've either called dumb, moron, or stupid. I got a few words I'd call you and some of your buddies that hit the like button, but I'd love to do it in person. I think you need to rub one off looking at Miley Cyrus since you spent so much time in that thread, geez.

I post this not for the Judge article, but for the quick clip about Freddy Freeman, as you scroll down. An ESPN story about him is on April 11th, and looks to be very good. He's a Mets killer for sure, but a great ballplayer and class act. Amazing how he must have handled that trauma and still turned into a superstar.https://1045theteam.com/aaron-judges-injury-might-be-more-serious-than-the-yankees-are-saying-audio/?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1045 The Team Recurring New Template 2021-04-08&utm_term=WTMM MASTER LIST
