I didn't even watch tonight but why is Pillar getting so much PT? Should be almost strictly like a late inning replacement. Yeah I know hard-nosed player and all that. Came back from the terrible hbp yeah I get that. Nut on a team that regularly struggles to score runs you can't have a guy like him in the lineup so often. And lol at the notion of McNeil being like some pure hitter.

The 3 months that the Mets spent in first place was mostly because Phillies and Braves were struggling. They should have taken the team apart in April when these guys had high value. Now, not so much. We added at least another 5 years for the inevitable rebuild. Sad state of affairs.
Five years? We have a chance for multiple Championships in that period??? Just kidding, where have I heard that before? 😁 Not sure it'll take 5 years, and there is no way when the Mets were 10 games over . 500, that the fan base would have accepted a tear down. I do recall however just a few short weeks ago the Yankees fanbase calling for just that,{ they won't admit that}, and look what's happened since. Things can turn on a dime.

Its hard to evaluate this team due to all the injuries. Was the time in first place a mirage or was it proof they were on the right track. Others may disagree but I still say Rojas burnt the pen out in the first half.

Its going to be hard to decide what to do with guys like Smith and Conforto who have had really sub par years. Conforto I probably make a qualifying offer and let him walk if someone offers big $$$. Smith has really regressed at the plate and I am not sure if the Smith we saw last year or this years version is the real Smith. These two compromise the bulk of our left handed power and combined have not hit 20 home runs. Put another way, they only have 5 more homeruns combined than Villar. One of them has to be replaced in the off season.

I know I am getting way ahead of myself in bringing up off-season moves, but something to keep in mind. Under MLB rules, if you sign a "premium" free agent (i.e. one who has received a qualifying offer) you forfeit your second draft pick. Not your second round pick. Your second pick.

The Mets will have two first round picks. At the rate they are going, they will both be in the top half of the round. If they sign a big time FA, they lose one of them.

That is a big opportunity cost which just might be a deterrent to big spending.

Its funny but I was thinking about that the other day as it relates to Baez. If they re-sign Baez would that cost them a pick?

I thought if another team offers player qualifying offer then you sign the player after he declines the offer from his current team you would have to give up a pick

But you can break up the band. What about team chemistry? 🙄

If Uncle Stevie ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.
To both posts--Steve is purportedly a smart guy who has made billions. He should be able to hire somebody to figure it out. What has changed in the last 2 years?
Alonso's power production is way down from 2019, or maybe that was a flash in the pan?
Conforto, McNeil are far down from last several years, as we know.

Nimmo, Davis and McCann seem to be on par.

Did not realize that Smith has never had more than 177 ABs prior to this season. He had a decent 2020 with a 316 avg, and he was trending up. He's having a rough year.

So with Alonso, McNeil, Conforto and Smith not hitting well, and no deGrom and the pitching slipping after the All Star break, you get a losing streak.

Stroman's frustration is bubbling over. Remember when he was asked to not swing with the bases loaded and then Nimmo (I think) grounded out ending the inning 2 or 3 games ago? Considering he put up a respectable game holding a division leading team to 3 runs, why the hell should he have to answer the question as to the results not being there. I like his answer and what he muttered after the answer. Those are better questions for Nimmo, McNeil, Conforto, Davis and others.

True but doubt we'll be in on any of the possible QO FA's. Seager, Story, Correa, Freeman I would guess looking at a list. Adds another layer to the Rocker mess though.

Is that Pine-Sol I smell? Think a major housecleaning is coming in the off-season. Funny thing is for most of the season Cohen's tweets have been more like Night Shift. Stop being critical of the team etc.

As we know, the plan was for Alderson to be the CEO. Alderson would hire the Baseball Operations guy, who would in turn hire a GM. The two of them would run the team. Cohen would write checks as requested. Beyond that, he would focus on his very lucrative day job.

Alderson failed in executing the plan - miserably. Not saying it was all his fault. Just saying he failed miserably.

I suspect that this offseason. the team of Cohen and Alderson (in that order!) will reprise the search. Hopefully with better results.

Remember that it was a strategic necessity for Cohen to position Alderson as the face of the franchise. Alderson was a trusted "good ol' boy" who would help Cohen get elected to the good ol' boys club. Now that Cohen is securely a member of the club, Alderson's services may no longer be required. I don't think Cohen cans him, but I think his role will be subordinated.

If I'm the Mets, start by signing Baez as our 2B man for next year. He strikes out too much but has power and defends well. Put McNeil at 3B until Baty is ready. Davis and Cano platoon as DH. We should look to upgrade the outfield in center and left if Conforto stays on a qualifier.

Pitching wise we hope to have Jake, Walker, Cookie and Megill healthy and ready to roll. Thor coming back on a qualifier would be huge. Resigning Stroman is the wildcard.

The pen is not bad but just overworked. We need the manager to let these guys go 6 innings plus from the start of the season and not remove guys just because the they are facing the batters for a third time in a game.

Cookie?
What about Walker, if he is not "Cookie."

Here is a problem:

I cant see any of them coming. Marte has always been interesting but he never plays a full year. And we should do anything to lock up Loup for a couple of years

I don't want to see McNeil or Davis back. Especially not with McNeil as a 3B. 3B is a power position and what we need are some guys who can hit for power and also a good average. Meaning 275-290. The damn Braves are now taking over the division this season because even without Acuna they have at least 5 guys with over 20 hrs including their entire infield. And 2 guys with over 80 rbi's. We have zero. Hell their entire infield also has more RBI's than anyone on our team. And McNeil doesn't hit for a high enough average to carry his low power numbers at a position like 3B. I could see if he was a .320 guy who you could stick at leadoff to jump start the offense. But all he'd do is swing at the damn 1st pitch all the time.

Someone has to play 3B. I am not seeing the team sign Bryant or Story. I suspect one of the reasons Bryant is not here and Baez is here is due to lobbying by Lindor. We only need a 3B for two years until Baty is ready. I am assuming both Davis and McNeil will be back since we control them, they are cheap, and we have the BVW gift of Cano back with 30 million added to the payroll. If they sign anyone it would most likely be Baez as it would not cost a draft pick as Doc pointed out earlier. An infield of Pete, Baez, Lindor and McNeil is not terrible and up the middle pretty strong defensively.
Outfield is where we need major help. The entire starting OF has what 23 hrs between all three of them. Unacceptable.

Why do all our prospects need to be 22/23 before they come up ???
Trout Harper Acuna Albies ect ect 20-21 and are mvp candidates ????

What if I told you McNeil is tied for 3rd in BA in all of baseball from 2018-21? He's only behind Brantley (.313), Betts (.307), and tied with Freeman in that time period with a .305 BA.

Raise your hand if you have ever heard of Chance Sisco! He is the new backup catcher, for now at least. Yennsy Diaz down.

Some posters in this thread love to whack off to prospects. From Google Search

People also ask

Is Chance Sisco good?

Sisco raked at every stop through his first few minor league seasons, and Baseball America ranked him among the sport's 70 best prospects in both 2017 and 2018. His 2016 season, in particular, was an impressive run through Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk, as Sisco combined to bat . 317/. 403/.

Let Pete “Hammer” a 2 run homer for a win. Yes let’s “hammer” the bullpen😎
Against the Marlins or Nats maybe. Against the Giants, Dodgers, Braves etc he will strike out with the bases loaded in the 7th while down a run. Then hit a solo home run in the 9th down 3 runs. 🤣
