OT: Official 2021 NY Mets Season Thread

From what I have read, MLB is offering the MLBPA a team salary floor of $100M. Everybody would have to spend $100M, and the have-nots would be subsidized by those who go over $180M. I don't see it happening but who knows.
I read the same thing. 12 teams are under 100 million in total payroll this season. The Indians would have to double their current payroll to reach that figure. Can't see it happening either.

Brings up some interesting choices. Do you re-sign Stroman? Do you offer Thor and Conforto qualifiers? Do you attempt to sign Baez? Seems like the owners are trying to reduce the tax threshold to $180 million. Can't see the PA agreeing to that.

I wonder if Cohen, based upon his most recent tweet is thinking of a major overhaul in the off season as he feels these guys have underperformed.

Should be an interesting off-season.
Obvisouly Cohen is footing the bills, but I certainly would not want him deciding personel issues,

I am currently in LA. Planned trip awhile ago when we were in 1st place. Will be at game tomorrow. LA has gone crazy over Dodgers. If anything, would be nice to see Lindor and Baez return.
Was also thinking about going to SF earlier in week. Thank goodness did not.

Somewhat OT - Braves reached agreement with Travis d'Arnaud on a contract extension today. Two years (club option for a third), $16 million.

We gave McCann four years for $40 million, and convinced ourselves that we were getting a bargain.

We were in a pickle after not getting Realmuto

I assumed sarcasm because the Mets signed McCann weeks, if not months, before the Phillies signed Realmuto. Mets were scared off by Realmuto's initial demands. They quickly, and probably prematurely, pivoted to Plan B. The market for Realmuto eventually dried up, and the Phillies wound up re-signing him to a reasonable contract.

I don't remember the timeline, but at the time of the McCann signing, but I found this. Can't argue with the logic here. Were they supposed to wait and be left empty-handed? Or break the bank on Realmuto?:

“We have a number of needs and we can afford to wait to fill some of them,” Alderson told the New York media on Monday. “We can’t afford to wait to fill all of them. This wasn’t a compromise pick. We’ve been engaged with James [McCann] for a considerable period of time."

McCann, however, was the much cheaper option. Like the Phillies, the Mets came into the offseason with the hole at the catcher’s position. Signing McCann gives them the flexibility to go after either George Springer or Trevor Bauer later in the offseason.

Alderson also said that the market for top players is moving much slower than the second-tier.

“When you have different parts of the market that are moving in different paces, you have to make some decisions,” Alderson said. “You have to make choices. Not only based on the player alternatives but also the timing.

“Right now, things are a little slower in the gourmet section than they are in the meat department. That’ll change. I talked to one agent today who has a very good player that is a free agent who might not sign until January or February. They’re just playing it by ear.”

I always found it very odd on how quickly we moved on from Realmuto. He must have told the front office he wouldn't come to NY perhaps? They still way overpaid McCann off the shortened 2020.

That d'arnaud contract is a steal if he plays more than a month or two per season.

I recall that when McCann was signed, most pundits were very surprised that the Mets gave him four years. Speculation was 2 for 20, maybe 3 for 25. Not 4 for 40.

Mets are hoping that for the final two years of the contract, he'll be an overpaid backup.

This is really sad. It amazing how badly the Mets f’d up the off season and trade deadline. Cohen is really starting to look like a clown.

For those watching the game, you just saw what you give up when you don't have a real centerfielder.

Nimmo catches what he gets to. However, he has no confidence retreating on a ball. Therefore he plays very deep, and base hits get dunked in front of him with annoying regularity. Just cost them a run.

I'm hoping that as well.

Wish we had a Cedric Mullins.

The lack of hits/runs has cost the Mets far more than a shallow fly ball to centerfield. For every ball that drops in for a run is overlooked for a dozen men left on base in scoring position each game. Which one has hurt the Mets more?

Robot umps
Huge call on McNeil
One eighth of a ball away from clipping the outside of the strike zone and McNeil is complaining like a little b****. Whatever happened to the “to close to take” approach with two strikes. We didn’t lose because of umps. Not even close. We lost because we can’t hit and whine about it.

100% agree. I always would tell my kids, the worse feeling as a batter is walking back to the dugout and not swinging!!

I thought the whining by both McNeil and Buehler was ridiculous.

Thus why I said I wish we had a Credric Mullins. A guy who can hit for average, has some power, can steal bases and defend. Just stuck on a terrible team.

Stand up if you're surprised that JD struck out with the bases loaded. Anybody? Nope didn't think so. I only expected it to be swinging not staring.

But all that was Chilli Davis’ fault!!!!!

I used to like McNeil’s intensity but now he just acts like a whiny little bitch too often.

Remember when hitters used to foul off pitches that was too close to take???

IDK. If that pitch had been called correctly, and had led to a Met game winning rally, we'd all be praising McNeil's newly found plate discipline.

OTOH, if he swings and misses at that pitch, we'd be ripping him for his lack of plate discipline.

I know that umpiring is hard. So is hitting. The hitter did his job. The umpire did not. If you choose to cast blame (there is no obligation to do so!), cast it where it belongs.

The team needs to be dismantled from top to bottom - mostly. Keep Nimmo, Alonso and Lindor. I have a bad feeling Degroms career is mostly over. All pitchers wirh the exception of Megill can go and I wouldn’t cry- megill’s got guts. Qualify Noah and Conforto and if they walk smell ya later. Try to trade McCann - eat some is the salary and let Nido catch until Alvarez is ready. Release Canó and figure out a severance package. Move Mauricio to second immediately. All the coaching staff and all of front office can go. I’m willing to go through a rebuild next year - then sign some some free agents and have them join the kids the following year.

Not sure which is/was more frustrating to watch. Our Football team trying to get a first down a few years ago against Michigan or the Mets try to get a hit with runners in scoring position?

With this plan, you're looking at way more than a single rebuilding year. This is a multi-year rebuild that needs new management from the top down and much, much better scouting.
