Soto will probably demand 40 million plus per year. Cannot see how the Padres can afford him long term. Dodgers yes, as well as the other big market clubs. Do you gut your farm system for a two year rental if you are the Padres? Maybe if you think you can win it all this year.
Well if they were to make a crazy trade for Soto and Bell and have them to go along with Machado, Tavis, their starters and now Hader they certainly could win it all. I would put them over anybody in the NL.

Adding the extra wildcard has changed how winning teams are willing to trade with one another. I would never in a thousand years think a first-place team like the Brewers would deal a premier closer to another team competing against them to win the National Pennant. Or see Atlanta make a trade with Houston. Boy, has the world changed. It might have been rare in the past, but it seems more acceptable today.

I was surprised by that as well. But as you say, the extra spot changes things. And in Hader's case, he was going to be due a lot of money over the next two years, so the Brewers probably felt the time was right to get the best return they could.

I would have been all over that Lopez deal. Twins stole him from Balt have no idea what they were doing there.

Can the Padres afford to pay all these guys and Soto?

I dunno- but they just keep plowing forward. I think Hader is due $11 million next year and the year after is a $16 million option, so they could either decline or try to trade him before then after seeing how this year goes.

The Hader thing smells of a small market team unable to hang onto a quality player, so move him to get something out of it. The next question is, did the Brewers concede the winning a pennant and/or a World Series?

By contrast our payroll is reported as 260 million or 2nd overall. We could add some salary without going over the Cohen tax if that is correct.

I don't think adding to the payroll is a problem. Depleting the farm system is an issue. The front office is clearly trying to build depth, so there will be a time when trading a highly regarded prospect doesn't impact your system significantly.

We have a lot of FA's coming up and cannot sign them all. You need some young controllable players with low salaries to offset the mega contracts.

I also think the front office thinks that deGrom may be able to stay healthy and back to normal. Because, if he does, we are as in good of a position for a big playoff run as anyone.

We got to sign Diaz, no questions asked.
Nimmo is going to ask for a boat load of money. Boras is his agent. That's a problem.
I would love to re-sign Walker because you can never have enough starting pitching.
Trevor Williams has turned out to be a good fit for the Mets. Sign him as long as it's not too expensive.
Re-sign May, but make it with incentives
Bassitt is an option that both sides must invoke. If you can't keep most of the starters, then keep Bassitt.
I'm OK with letting the rest of the free agents walk.

The Mets issue is BP and another bat in the lineup. I want the Mets to add a bat to add length to the batting order. You have to be able to match up with other playoff opponents. If SD gets Soto, they become a dangerous team. SD has the pitching, and now their lineup would be a real threat at full strength.

Does Tylor Megill's return solve the bullpen issue?

Padres got Soto AND Bell for Abrams (former top 10), Gore (former top 10) a current 20ish ranked and 80ish ranked Top 100 prospects and Padres 14th ranked prospect. And now Passan just reported a current Padres major leaguer too.

It's a done deal. Pads had a great deadline that's for sure. Dodgers and Pads are still the faves but we still have a good shot.

If we can finish with the best record, would not the Dodgers and Pads play in the divisional series?

If true they become the NL favorites.

That’s a damn good 2-5 The Padres have now IF Tatis comes back healthy.

Machado
Soto
Tatis
Bell
There were some rumors I heard either on MLB radio or Mad Dog sports regarding Tatis. He may not make it back this year, either injury is worse than thought or he is not taking rehab seriously. Time will tell I guess. If he does come all the way back that will be a tough lineup.
