OT: Official 2022 NY Mets Season And Post Season Thread

The final weekend line on the Mets "Big Three": 14.1 innings pitched, 11 earned runs allowed. That's an ERA of 6.91.

Needed just one of them to come up big. Just one.
Let’s hope Jake’s blister and Maxs oblique are ok !

Guillorme had his big chance 1st and 3rd one out in the 3rd inning. Known as a contact hitter he didn't even make contact.
Guillome s role should be as a defensive replacement in late innings. Since last year, he has had 420 ABS and has driven in 21 runs. That’s putrid ! Nothing offensively should be expected of him and it’s frustrating when I see him and our catchers - especially McCann - in the lineup together given their offensive futility. If many wonder why our offense sucks, look at our 8 and 9 hitters amongst other things.

Wheeler and Nola are as tough as a 1-2 combo as can be. Phillies have been peaking as of late which is scary.
Not that Darvish / Snell are chopped liver but I can see the stench of Wilpon rising again with Wheeler pitching a gem in game 1 of WC Round.
Please give me (us) the Padres !
You're right to be concerned, because Wheeler and Nola can be tough (although Nola is inconsistent) But the Phillies are hardly peaking. The Phils had lost 10 out of 13 going into the Washington series this last weekend. They're going to the playoffs only because the Brewers have been pretty bad too.

Tough weekend for the Mets. I don't follow this thread regularly but went through the comments as they melted down over the weekend. Interesting. Agree that the Alvarez call up was strange but I don't get the criticism of Buck. He has been pretty consistent in how he is managed all year with regard to platoons at several positions. If anyone was standing out, and had earned the job, he would have stuck with them. What is Vogelbach's average against lefties? Not good. We just don't have enough right-handed hitting depth and thus Marte's injury hurt us more than it should have. The question is whether he will be back for the playoffs.

I have felt like the Braves are the better team for awhile, yet I thought we would get one this weekend. They got key hits and beat our best pitchers when it counted. We have too many guys/position that just do not produce enough consistently at the plate. This next week or so will be important because they have a lot of big decisions to make in the off season. Braves are set up for another long run as a contender.

I think you mean "provided the Phils can't run down the Padres." If the Phils do, then they, and not the Padres, will be visiting the Mets in the first round.
I'm almost sure that the post I quoted was from a Padres fan who was talking about catching the Dodgers after they traded for Soto, Bell etc, because they had so many games head to head games left with them at the time. So I meant it as I said it.

The only thing that could be worse than this weekend would be if either the Braves or Yankees were to win the title. Any other teams I could live with.

Yes, which was also prior to the Tatis news, of course.

Between that, Soto’s career worst slump, Josh Bell forgetting how to hit, and Drury getting injured. Throw in a slight Manny slump and it’s been rough since the deadline.

Snell and Darvish are both top 5 pitchers in baseball right now, and the offense has been solid on the road.

Which was months ago. . . the Padres trail the Dodgers by 23 games.

Nido hitting for McCann. When the Mets passed on Realmuto to sign McCann, could anyone have predicted this?
Not to nitpick too much but Realmuto wanted no part of NY and made it clear early.

Though, I am starting to wonder if Nido has turned a corner and could possibly be a .250 10 HR guy with defense?

McCann, Canha, Lugo, Naquin, Ruf. That's a start.
I'm hoping that Nido may have figured out hitting and could be a .250 10HR guy. McCann- do what you want with him.
Canha- professional player. Not sure I would be in a rush to get rid of him. But, we do need better as a starter
Naquin/Ruf- oh boy- they hurt
Lugo- I'm a bit torn on him. I always try to look to see what could be equal or better out there.

McCann, Canha, Lugo, Naquin, Ruf. That's a start.
McCann is owed $24MM over the next two years. Cohen bought out Cano for much more. Clearly, Alvarez will be given every opportunity to catch 100-120 games next year, with Nido in line for the rest. I think you will get your wish.

Canha is under contract, has been solid, and will be back.

Lugo is a free agent. How highly the Mets will value him, compared to whatever else is out there in the trade or free agent market, I cannot say. But I can say this - the Mets don't have the in-house replacements ready in their system. They just don't.

Naquin is a free agent and will be gone.

Ruf is under contract for $3MM. Chump change to Cohen. If the Mets need his spot on the 40 man, as I suspect they will at some point, he will be DFA'd.

Thanks Doc- I was going to go there as well. These two are 4/5 guys- not a lot of names out there available to replace them.
Between free agency and trades that can be made there are always ways to bring in reinforcements. Let's face it this team is gonna look very different next season. Perhaps not so much the regular nine but certainly the pitching staff and the bench players.

Canha is an okay role player/ 4th OF type. I just don't think he cuts it as everyday corner OF. We need more 25 home run power. Can't have that much swing and miss if you're not a big power guy.

I do think Lugo is replaceable. Even in-house. Hell I would roll with De Montes Oca and try to harness his overpowering arm talent. If not im sure there are probably free agents out there that could match what he brings at this juncture of his career. My bigger concern is if Ottavino can repeat this season in his age 37 season. I would love a hard throwing lefty like the Braves have in Minter.

Considering flying East for the Saturday game, any advice for a first time Citi field goer?
If the time of game is important to you, my first piece of advice would be to wait until it is announced, probably on Wednesday night.

Would be shocked if Padres/Mets don’t get the prime time slot.

There’s too much star power between the two teams.

I'm giving up on the division when the Braves pop the Champaign. What is the official magic number? 2?

Fly in Friday and go to nebraska game.
At citi , the museum is kinda cool if you’re into Mets history at all . You may not be .Best value of seats is the excelsior level (formerly ceasars) 300 level . Worst value is the Coca Cola corner (formerly Pepsi porch ) 300 level.
the concessions in center field get crowded . So if you want to eat at shake shack get there early .
take the train to the game . That drive can be brutal.

He's had hot stretches before. I don't see any reason to believe that he suddenty figured out hitting.

The Mets, however, have a real prospect coming along at catcher. Despite not being ready, I liked Alvarez's at-bats and think his approach (like understanding that, yes, that lefty was going to throw yet another slider in the dirt even with 3 balls). And he has one hellaciously powerful swing. It's clear he hits bombs. Of course, I have no idea how well he catches.

As far as offense, the Mets will almost certainly ride things out at catcher while awaiting Alvarez. They may look at outfielders with a bit more pop than we have right now, or a third baseman, though I'm not sure that there are many free agent options there--just a couple of big ones that I'm not sure the Mets would pursue.

Not resting anybody tonight. I guess you really can't, not being mathematically eliminated. Hopefully Braves clinch tonight, and Buck can rest people on Tuesday and Wednesday without remorse.
