OT: Real Estate Question - Toms River/Brick and area

What do you think the main difference would’ve been if they would’ve moved?
Superior hospital and both pre- and follow up care

Plus once you are over 80 you need support and there is no better support than sons and daughters that have their sh1t together and live close by.

Healthcare is definitely superior in the northeast

Its gotten remarkably better down south than the last 10 or 15 years, and by the time we get down there, I anticipate it will continue to improve

Definitely agree having family around, especially later years, can make a big difference

Agreed. It’s fine to retire and be away from family if you are healthy and insependent. Once you have health/cognitive issues and need supportive care, you need to be close to family.

My father passed when he was 97 and my mom still going at 93 probably till 99. They would have died earlier if they didn’t have their great grand kids around. She helped raise them before they went to day care. They added 7-10 years to their life.
My parents just got another great grand child on Sunday

I moved to Pt Pleasant borough six years ago. Moved from north Jersey. Best move of my life and your grand kids will thank you. Feel free to DM me as I know the whole area well

Have any of you recently moved and have to hire a good mover. Good chance we are moving to delaware and now need to find a moving company

Well- we did purchase in Middletown DE...Closing in a couple of weeks. Decided to stay as close to the NJ Border as possible. Besides close to NJ...only 30 min to Philly 1.5 hour to Balt/DC...
Maybe beach is/was not a priority. Dewey is quite a way from Middletown. How are the bay beaches, such as Woodland Beach, which is fairly close to you?

Congrats! That location is a nice compromise. Very close to NJ (and assuming family), but beyond the reach of oppressive Trenton taxes.

My wife grew up on an island but hates the beach. Even when we do an island vacation- she prefers the pool. But, the smell of the sea, the sound and even the view- that is a different story. But we can get to various beaches easy enough.

Family is still a little ways but it isn’t to bad. One son in Jersey City and the other in Hackensack.
But it was a part of the equation
Even for me, work wise. I’m remote but there are times I need to meet clients in the city. Middletown has an Amtrak station and just over 2 hours into they city for $12

If you can get to the Wilmington station, an Acela will get you there in probably 90 mins. Not bad at all.

According to google maps you must be a speed demon, lol. They say 56 min from Middletown to PHL

Wow! Only $12 from Delaware to NYC? That's gotta be the best deal ever! It's like $16-$17 just one way from Aberdeen / Matawan to Penn Station NYC via NJ Transit for a regular adult fare. Hell, other tolls aside, it's now $9 to just drive into Manhattan south of 60th street - lol

The other day my sister was telling me how efficient Avalon is run and what a clusterf--k Stone Harbor is in comparison. She said the is a significant difference in the property taxes between the 2 towns as a result.

It reminded me that you want to buy in SH.

I think my sister is about 10-12 houses from the ocean.

I worked with a woman who purchased 2 ocean front lots in Avalon for $10,000 each in 1968 after a hurricane. Her husband was a cop in town at the time.

Stone harbor's taxes are actually cheaper for the same size house.

I will have to tell her she does not know what she is talking about.

That has always been one of my favorite hobbies since we were kids.

I was looking it up the other day and thought the same thing- Amtrak out of Middletown- maybe the site was wrong but who knows. I would get to expense it regardless

Have keys in hand- now I can talk crap about Nj all I want. Lol

Funny thing is- seller included most of the furniture- which include an Eagles bar table and chairs with Eagle beer mugs, a framed Eagles Jersey, etc…
I told the wife it goes to the curb but since it is literally in brand new condition, she won’t let me. I’m going to wreck it all by accident while the movers are tgere. lol

Cut a hole in the table and use it as a toilet.

I always give credit to the people who make the move versus sitting in NJ and complaining, even though I've never really seen you complain about NJ. Good luck! You will have to see if there are any recruits for us in DE, and maybe plan tailgates at UMD.

Good luck!! Don't forget you'll probably need some sort of Mets game package now.

I don’t either.

I’ll probably use where I am now for as long as possible as a home base and travel when I can.

But you also don't really complain.

The complainers are the ones who don't leave. It's very odd.

Generally most people, by adulthood, realize you can move around. And you get what you pay for in life. I definitely appreciate someone not needing NJ schools and moving to a low tax state like DE. Every place has a drawbacks and benefits. To me, NJ is worth the cost. Most other expensive places in the world are expensive because there's demand to live there.

Having lived in Cincinnati, Western NY near the Finger Lakes, North Carolina and having spent a lot of time in Arizona, we like NJ. Nothing is perfect. Jersey people tend to vocalize their complaints more than people in other parts of the country. Some consider that being rude. We here call that being honest and direct. Generally, you know where you stand with others here in the NJ metro area. IDK, I like that. In the South, they were kind of "fake nice." Arizona is a close second to NJ.

AZ you get a mix of transplants from the coast and Midwest. I went to a winery on the walking wine tour in Scottsdale and of course owners were from NJ and gave us extra pours.

The heat in the summer would get me there to live, but visiting was nice. Scottsdale kind of like a Hoboken vibe in the downtown area. I can see the appeal. To me, I need more of a city though, Phoenix area feels like a giant suburb, like LA, Houston and a lot of other bigger cities in warmer climates.

Noticed my typing/spelling has been horrific lately. Sheesh- hear/here.

Phoenix downtown is boring. Like Cincinnati's downtown. The action in Arizona is well north. Flagstaff is a great small/medium sized city, but it gets cold and snowy there. We enjoy Sedona, but there is zero night life there. As I said, no place is perfect. Not sure if true for Phoenix, but the Sedona area and surrounding areas (Cottonwood/Prescott) is now over run with California expats, and they are special. We blend out there (at least we think we do), get into our hiking and mountain biking, and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Sedona gets hot, but not crazy like Phoenix.

Thought you’d like to hear this intersfing note from my drive back to NJ after the bowl game. California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey from 12/26 to 12/31. The lowest temperature we encountered? 22 degrees in Holbrook, AZ at night after the game. I was not prepared for that, didn’t know Arizona had that in her.

Every time I go to Phoenix area, I question how anyone got the idea it was a habitable place to settle, let alone build a massive, sprawling metro. 95 degrees at like 10 a.m. in May and all the shade you could ever want ...between a 200-degree boulder and a skinny cactus. I'd have to be a different species.

N Arizona is definitely much nicer. Just a bit limited on towns. Flag is great but too snowy for too little payoff. Also seems like it'd be too transient. Sedona awesome but too touristy for me.

Payson seems quite intriguing, and maybe Prescott.

Prescott for the win. County seat. It feels like Jersey because there is a Home Depot, a Lowes, a full shopping mall, and a cool downtown called Whiskey Row. Beautiful hiking and plenty of water spots for hot weather recreation. In Sedona, if you have been there long enough, you can duck the tourists (hell, we are tourists I suppose) and stay out of the touristy areas. Kind of like living at the Jersey Shore.

I drove through Prescott for the first time when I took the long way to Phoenix (not entirely on purpose : ) last year. Will have to stay and check it out longer next time.

Yeah, tourists don't need to be a dealbreaker. I lived in Steamboat Springs, CO for a while and got a bit down on people with no real connection to the place coming through and treating it like people with no real connection to the place. Plus, the constant up and down of busy and deserted seasons.

On the other hand, it's inherently nice to be somewhere that draws in vacationers from around the world. Fun to think, "Their vacation is my everyday."

That last part is something we say all the time. We made the move to live in northern San Diego County and sometimes feel like we are on vacation all year round.

People who have not spent any time in the various parts of Arizona, have no idea how diverse the terrain and climate is throughout the state. It gets cold in the desert at night! I related the story here that in early December 2023, we got stranded at Chase field after a concert, and we walked 4 miles back to our car. It was freezing in Phoenix. Holbrook is due East of Flagstaff, where it gets very cold, and they get a lot of snow. One other thing that is a running joke in our family. Years ago I related to some older dude who was from the South, and he asked me why the heck anyone would want to live in Arizona because "they ain't got no trees there!" Whenever we are out on a hike in a forest area in Arizona, we bring that line up.

San Diego is a special place, and I'm talking about the city, but I'm sure the surrounding areas are great too. Closest one can get to a near perfect climate. The nice part about visitors, as fsg2 said is that you get to meet a lot of people from all over the country. In Sedona, I think we have run into people from every other B1G team. Mostly folks from Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
