Not unprecedented but pretty damn rare to have a winter storm like this affecting so much of the really deep south; Houston's biggest snowfall ever was 20" in Feb 1895 and so was New Orleans's with 8.2", but they haven't had measurable snow in 15 years. Warnings up for the counties in pink and ice storm warnings for the counties in dark blue. This includes ~1" of snow and some ice in south Texas, 1-3" of snow with 3-5" possible where heavier bands hit, for Houston to New Orleans, 1-3" of snow in Pensacola and some ice/sleet/snow even in Gainesville. Winter storm watches are up from SE GA through SE SC, including the coast, for a few inches of snow and some sleet/freezing rain.

I had posted about this threat in the pattern thread on Friday, but thought it might go away like many of these forecasts for wintry weather in the deep south do. But this is now imminent, starting tonight in Texas and going through tomorrow towards the Atlantic Coast. Crazy to think that Houston, New Orleans and Pensacola might get as much snow with this storm as Philly and NYC did yesterday. This could be a crippling storm, especially for places that get freezing rain/ice.

Winter storm is raging now. There's already 2-3" on the ground in Houston with another 2-3" to come and snow is moving into LA. New Orleans and Pensacola are forecast to get 3-5" and Tallahassee is forecast to get 2-4", while Perry, FL to Jacksonville are forecast to get up to 0.2" of ice and up to 1" of snow. And there's a blizzard warning for much of the I-10 corridor from Beaumont TX to Lafayette LA - not any more snow is forecast than nearby areas, but the warning is for the winds >35 mph on top of that snow creating whiteout conditions; those warnings will likely move east as the day continues. After that, 2-4" in Savannah and Charleston and up to 5-8" for the OBX. Crazy.

South Texas is absolutely lost once they get snow - everything shuts down.
Didn’t they get a cold snap a few years back that almost shut their power grid down? Definitely some tough weather conditions across the entire Country this week

The ones across the central/western Panhandle will likely all be exceeded with 3-7" looking likely for many, including Pensacola and Tallahassee, so there could be an all-time FL snowfall record coming. By the way, TWC is forecasting 3-5" for Pensacola and 5-8" for Tallahassee to Panama City and up into Valdosta, GA; the 5-8" swath is a bit more than the NWS forecasts.

New Orleans with 3" already and nearing blizzard conditions, with another 3-6" likely - they have an outside shot at reaching 10-12" for much of SE LA and coastal MS/AL, as per some of the models, but even 5-8" will be crippling. Already 10" on the ground in the Lafayette, LA area along I-10.

The other interesting observation for this snowfall is that it's light and powdery as temps are in the 20s across the entire path of the storm even down to the Gulf beaches, which is just about unprecedented. Usually when this area gets snow temps are marginal and it's wet and heavy.

Yes, temps were much colder than TX is seeing now and they stayed below 32F for nearly a week, iirc, but the snowfall amounts were much less, at least for most of south Texas.

You’re killing me Bac
Don’t need any construction delays for the stadium refurb
Bama comes to town in ~220 days - need the place ready by then
There's no construction going on there today and there won't be for a few days with temps not getting above 45F until Saturday and assuming they get 2-4"3-6" of snow and maybe some ice (I've seen forecasts from 2-7" for Tallahassee, but if it's only 2-3" that'll be because they get more sleet and freezing rain which might be worse).

Just finding this stuff randomly on my X feed. Global warming, my arse (total sarcasm!).

Forget the counties & munis. Do the airports have the equipment to handle snowfall at all?

I understand that people in the Houston area were told they may need to shelter in place. They got 3-4" and the current temp is in the upper 30's and sunny. Schools are closed till Thu and roads are deserted.

Probably a good thing. They don't have the equipment to clear the roads, the material (salt, sand, etc.) to put down or the equipment to spread it.

10+" in the Lafayette area where the snow is ending, 8" now in New Orleans (was 7" in the tweet below) and 1-2" more to come, so their all-time record of 8.2" (1895) is in jeopardy, 5.4" in Mobile and their 6" all-time record will surely drop with 2-3" more to come and 2" OTG in Pensacola with pouring snow right now. Snow will be in Tallahassee soon and there's about 1" in Atlanta, where they were only expecting flurries. Storm is overperforming - wish ours did on Sunday, lol.

Colleague down in Houston just told me he has 6 inches in his backyard.

Update...
  • About 4” fell in Houston metro
  • 10+" fell in Lafayette, LA where the snow is over and where they had the 1st blizzard warning ever in Louisiana
  • 10" have fallen in New Orleans, shattering their all-time record of 8.2” set in 1895, with another inch or so to come,
  • 6.2" have fallen Mobile breaking their 6" all-time record with 2-3" more to come
  • And most amazingly, perhaps, 5” of snow has fallen in Pensacola Florida breaking Florida’s all-time record snowfall of 4” anywhere in the state. And it’s still pouring snow right now.
  • Snow has begun in Tallahassee and Panama City with several inches likely to come.
  • There will also likely be significant icing (up to ¼” of ice and some sleet/snow) in parts of far SE GA and NE FL
  • There's about 1-2" in Atlanta, where they were only expecting flurries.
  • And areas in SE GA and eastern SC are about to get hammered with a widespread 3-6” along the coast, including in Savannah and Charleston with lesser amounts inland
  • And Eastern NC is expected to get 4-8” of snow, including the Outer Banks, with lesser amounts inland
  • Storm is overperforming - wish ours did on Sunday, lol; we will possibly see some dustings tonight at the NJ coast from this storm.

I know we make fun of places that shut down over 2" of snow.

But I'm done with this snow and cold.
I wish my area got so little snow we didn't even have shovels and salt.

A foot of snow in New Orleans, shattering their all-time record of 8.2" (1895). And 7-9" and still counting in Florida's western Panhandle, destroying Florida's previous snowfall record of 4". Who had these locations having more snow than Philly or NYC so far this winter on their 2025 bingo card? Time lapse video of NOLA below.

I have a home in Hilton Head, but we are in NJ now. Projected snowfall is now between 8-12 inches. My gated development closed offices when only 1-3 inches were expected. Obviously, the Island is not equipped for this. I doubt most stores will be open for days, so I hope people stocked up (but they might not be prepared as only 1-3 was projected as recent as this morning.

Update; now just 3-5 is expected as freezing rain / snow mix for the first few hours. Word from locals is that everything is iced over at this point. Hope my trees (palmettos, magnolias, pines, oaks and plants hang in there.

What?! No eggplant handy? Although I give you total credit for working an FSU football reference into a weather thread. The man won't be denied. 😂
Eggplant always ok the menu!
You know i gotta stump for the garnett & gold

Turns out that the "official" New Orleans measurement was 8.0" at the location they've used since 1947 (biggest snowfall since 1947 is 2.7"), which I assume means that this is not the all-time NOLA record, which is still 8.2" in 1895, recorded at Carrolton Gage. Damn shame, as there were a host of 9-12" amounts recorded in different parts of the city, but then again there were also 5-7" amounts - guessing it depends where the heaviest banding set up. Regardless, still a helluva storm for them and the video below shows what happens when there's little to no plowing or salt after a snowstorm - those streets are now ice rinks.

Not surprised but what a nightmare. Will the temps be going up for them?
