OT: The Official 2021 Return Of The Brood X Cicada Discussion Thread

Didn't we have this back in 2009 or 2011? I remember my FIL washing them off his walkway with a hose.

This is one of the few times that it pays to be mostly deaf.....

oh that and my kid's pre-HS concerts and recitals,
and when traveling on the plane with a screaming baby in the row behind you,
and when you are in the store and the shopping cart wheel squeaks,
and when the wife is nagging you to get something done,
and when the MIL is over....

okay maybe this whole deafness thing isn't so bad....

What a life. Hang out underground, come out and climb tree, molt, and then call for a mate. Breed and then die. That's your 17 year life.

I remember the brood in 2013 was nuts, especially in the watchung, martinsville, basking ridge area.

I remember golfing at Warrenbrook and nearly threw in the towel because they were literally falling out of trees onto us.
The last 17 year brood in Martinsville was 2013. So it will be another 9 years to see their offspring.

If you are referring to the Cicada Killer Wasps, we've been dealing with these for the past two summers. I can only imagine what it would be like if we have a Brood X outbreak here. I spent many days flagging nests during the day and injecting D-fense Dust at midnight trying to control them, only to have them come back twice as bad the next year. I finally put down Bifen LP at the end of the season, so hopefully the eggs are gone.

We were filling them with a warm solution of Boric Acid at night.
Burned the grass wherever we put it.
My dog (German short haired pointer) chases and kills them. One stung her last year, her front lip jaw area blew up like a balloon. Dum dog, its got wings get it.

Thankfully, my dog, a corgi, is lazy and doesn't chase anything. I was using a tennis racket to swat them out of the air. They are not very aggressive and the sting supposedly is very weak and non-toxic in humans. Look a lot scarier than they are, but having them swarming around the yard and flying into the cars is a PITA.

You'd be on RT22 with the windows down and musice on and all you hear are the cicadas. A real high pitched steady noise like a small motor that's overheated. They were 1/2 mile off 22 it was crazy. I worked off terrill rd and went on north ave scotch plains it was just nuts. Thousands upon thousands the birds were feasting

I will never, ever forget the invasion in Princeton. Took my mom to a doctor's appt, had no idea what those creatures were. Had no warning, I swear I wouldn't have gone if I had any inkling. The noise was incredible, but when they started swarming around your head most people were running in and out of the building.
The word swarming was in my brain for weeks.

You are not supposed to kill the cicada wasps. They only go after cicadas. They will not go out of their way to sting you. Unless you squeeze them, step on them or attack them.

They burrowed through half my lawn on the side of my house. Ignoring them was not an option. They were flying into my car when I was unloading groceries.

Me thnks you don't know what its like to have hundreds of theses wasps in yer yard

The Dylan song, “Day of the Locus,” was about him receiving an honorary doctorate degree in 1970 at Princeton. This was the same Brood we'll get this year.

UFO sounds in Princeton today. The next few weeks gone be lit
We went to check them out on Sunday. OK to visit a cicada invasion but I wouldn't want to live in one.

Somewhere at Bent Spoon someone is trying to turn them into an ice cream flavor.

I’m going to guess they taste disgusting, are high in protein and the whole thing is an acquired taste
The trick is to catch them still alive, drop them into a 60/40 blend of boiling hot Frank's Red Hot Sauce and Frank's XX Red Hot Sauce for 5 seconds, then pop 'em right into your mouth. Scrumptious.

Or, if you take your hot cicadas like a man, skip the Frank's XX and instead just simmer the regular hot sauce w/a handful of dried chilies until the chilies turn completely black. This version is also great for relieving congestion, clearing your house of unwanted guests, and killing small pets that venture into the kitchen area.
