OT: The Official 2021 Return Of The Brood X Cicada Discussion Thread

was in princeton running some errands and picking up food. they're f'ing loud and everywhere there. just carcasses all over the sidewalks and street. driving home, they were pinging off the windshield left and right.

Not a peep up here.

But.......

We drove back up from Charlottesville yesterday: from Northern Virginia (Front Royal) all the way up through the MD/PA border (when the trees finally disappeared) we could literally hear the cicadas while doing 80 on the highway with the windows open.
There are a handful at Babour pond but nothing crazy

Mmmmmmmm..... tossed cicada salad, fresh cicada milk, New England boiled cicada, ooooooooh I HATES CICADAS!

So, there is a cookbook out there? If not, maybe we can gather our Rutgers brains(or what's left of them) and publish a book.

Not that I should ask, but, you chew them, or swallow them whole?
You should always ask. LOL.

I just add 'em to the other exotic ingredients I use when blending myself my twice-daily protein drinks (in a juicer). Like all real men do. 🙂

In the mornings, when I do the Rocky-style three raw eggs in a glass thing, instead of a protein drink, I like to toss a few in my mouth whole and munch on them, washing them down with the raw egg. Ya know, while they're still alive and kicking.

A great way to start the day. Well... maybe not so much for the cicadas.

Hiked along the D&R towpath and Carnegie Lake. It sounded like Route 1 was the cutoff point. All the cicada racket was coming from the west, only heard road noise from the east.

Still haven’t seen a single one in somerset county. Why is there such a huge concentration in Princeton?

Just throwing this out there but I would think because the ground hasn't been dug up that much since the campus is so old.

Maybe the soil in more southern places like Princeton have hit the magic temp for the cicadas to emerge while places further north in New Jersey aren't quite there yet.

Development over time decimated the population.

Today i am hearing them loudly in the fields in Pike Run in Montgomery which is surprising. The rains followed by the heat will push out the stragglers. Perfect conditions...We should be peaking between now and next weekend. They will be in their operatic glory

If you have the time take a trek up to Princeton or Skillman Park off of rt 601. This only comes around every 17 years so its worth it

They've been out for a couple weeks now in Delaware and some people are still asking "what's that continuous alarm sound I hear all day?". 😂😂 These are people posting on a neighborhood app... It certainly makes me wonder about people.

Southern Hunterdon/Northern Mercer County (Hopewell/West Amwell/Lambertville area) and I haven’t heard or seen a damn thing yet from these cicadas.

OK, you are either really whacked, or just busting chops.

Same here in Passaic County (although @vkj91 indicates there may be some down by Barbour Pond - haven't visited there yet), and my backyard looks out on the High Mountain State Preserve. So I'm very surprised I see and hear nothing.

Both. 🙂

Actually, not both. I wasn't looking to bust anybody's chops. I have a weird and twisted sense of humor and enjoy a bit of fiction for the sake of humor.

So yeah, I'm totally whacked but just having some fun w/this stuff. Only way I'd ever eat any kind of insect intentionally would be if the alternative was starvation.

OK, I won't worry about you too much then.

No cicada ice cream for me. Went after dinner last night. The person taking orders said that they ran out of it 30 min after opening.

I was in Princeton last week and it was crazy loud in residential areas too. Interestingly, parts of Rutgers are quite old and untouched (the ecological preserve on Livingston for instance) but all is quite just 20 or so miles north of Princeton.
