OT: Winter Is Nigh...Advisories up for 2-3" for most of CNJ/SNJ/NYC/SE-PA today (12/15)

https://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?product=N0R&rid=DIX&loop=yes

watching that dry slot in south jersey....some heavier bands northwest of 195

pretty unimpressive here in Belle Mead...maybe an inch on the grass and sporadic snow on paved surfaces but only sticking there during heavier periods...all in all rather meh thus far
In Hamilton for a b-day party, barely anything here. It's falling, but sticking nowhere except grass. Just nuisance snow, nothing to shovel or plow.

Steady up here (JC/Hoboken) for a while now gonna head outside but streets appear to be fine.

Mt Holly blurb...

Got a few reports near Allentown and
in Sussex NJ of more than an inch already. Banding set up shop
the last few hours from Berks county northeast into Allentown so
three inches appears very doable now. The advisory has been
expanded west into these locations not previously included. CC
on KDIX radar continues to show some northwest advancement of
the mix line. The forecast was updated the forecast to reflect
more mixing further inland and lowered snow totals a bit along
the immediate coast.

We've got 2 inches down up here - coming down big, puffy flakes.

Still not sticking in my neighborhood in Cherry Hill. There is clear slush on the pavement and that will undoubtedly freeze tonight and cause bad roads tomorrow. But the good news is that it will be in the 40s tomorrow -- at least, if one believes the NWS. We all should be glad this is happening on the weekend -- except. of course, for those at the Army-Navy game, which I haven't watched since I was about 8 years old.

now really sticking to roads good...should see our main accumulations from now until 6PM....maybe 2.5 inches here total on grass

Just came in from a walk about 20 minutes ago - it's a really beautiful snowfall, as it's wet, but not windy, so the snow is sticking to the trees and shrubs perfectly. In the past hour we went from 0.5" of snow to 1.5" of snow and it's covering all paved surfaces, with even county/state roads in Metuchen (531/27) getting slushy, as temps are also down to around 30F. I'm guessing the major highways are still ok, but if this intensity keeps up past about 3 pm, we'll see accumulation even on major highways.

At this point, looking at the short range models and the radar, I'm certain we're going to reach the low end of the 3-6" forecast here and 5-6" isn't out of the question. Places to the west of the Delaware River, south of Trenton, and in NW NJ (Sussex/Warren) and the Lehigh Valley/Poconos might have a tough time reaching 3", although obs are for 2" already in some of those locations and the radar looks pretty good, so maybe 3" or more won't be so hard in those spots. Places within 20 miles of the Parkway, south of about Holmdel, are most likely to get the 5-6" amounts (except right at the coast).

Edit - just noticed NWS updated their map about an hour ago...pretty consistent with their 3-5" forecast.

Just came in from a nice lunch at Hailey's in Metuchen and then a quick shovel. The 3-6" forecast is definitely back on track, after a scare this morning, from the somewhat unexpected "dry slot". Had 1.5" around 12:30 pm and we now have 3.0" as of 2:45 pm (about 0.6"/hr) and it's coming down moderately.

Looking at the latest short range mesoscale HRRR model, we should expect another 2+" for the rest of the storm in most of the Philly-NYC corridor, so if you have 2" now, you'll likely end up with at least 3-4" and if you have 3" now, you can probably expect 5" total, with some isolated 6" totals.

The advisories for up to 3" of snow have been extended to Sussex/Warren and the Lehigh Valley. The winter storm warnings continue for coastal NJ from Ocean down to Cape May and DE (to 30 miles inland or so) for 5" of snow or more and some areas in that swath will get 7-8". Most of NE NJ and NYC and the Hudson Valley should get 4-6" and LI/CT could get 6-7" (which is why they have warnings (warnings are for 6" north of about 195).

Keep in mind that while most treated and/or well-traveled roads are mostly wet with some slush, side streets are snow-covered, as temps are in the 29-31F range; however, as the sun is now very low in the sky and sunset is coming, expect the snow to accumulate easily on all untreated roads starting around now, so travel is going to become more hazardous very soon. Usual maps below...

Yup....I cleaned a good 3" off the car earlier, while it was barely dusting for a while, but it's been coming down heavier for a good 45-minutes again at this point. Probably have to clean a couple another inch or 2 later.

2.5 in Hillsborough on back patio. Slushy 1/4 on development road.
Yup, nothing on state or county roads, minimal on local primary roads. Slush on neighborhood roads. Since it will be 40+ and sunny tomorrow, no need to even shovel. Hopefully a little more on grass before it ends, so the kids can break out the sled!

lol...maybe, it will snow lightly at least through the evening where the banding has moved off

there still is a band further back in PA so have to see where that ends up

Daughter is hoping to do some sledding, but it just doesn't seem like enough yet.

looks like heaviest banding has cleared Somerset County and pushed to the east

From the radar loops it appears we had been in a mix along the coast for a while. Hard to tell looking outside but road and walkway are still fairly snow free. It does appear to be changing over to all snow as I'm typing.

Up to 4.0" as of 4:00 pm and it's coming down moderately. Latest HRRR is showing another 1-2" for most of the Philly-NYC corridor (less south/more north), so I'm thinking we're going to make a run at 6" here in Metuchen.

Also, expect the snow to accumulate easily on all untreated roads starting around now with sunset coming and temps 29-31F, so travel is going to become more hazardous very soon - be safe out there.

Where do you make your measurements? If I go out to my front sidewalk I have 1/4 inch. If I go around the block 200 feet the sidewalk has at least 2 inches on it.

Yeah, official report of 3.5" in Trenton and 3+" everywhere else around Hamilton, yet not enough snow to sled on. Right. And you ought to be careful on those roads with "nothing" on them, because they're becoming snowy/icy as we speak.and everything that falls from here on out will accumulate on any untreated road. I get that you like to troll these threads, but don't mislead people who might be taken in by your posts and think the roads are going to be fine.

Snow has been sticking on at least the side roads up here in Northern Morris County for at least 4 hours. Let’s not forget many people on this board don’t live in Somerset County

On a snowboard in my open, quiescent back yard, as any official measurement should be. Measurements are never supposed to be taken on paved surfaces, which are almost always going to be much lower, due to their absorption of indirect solar radiation, which is why there's so much less accumulation on paved surfaces during daylight. Anyone measuring on a paved surface is doing it wrong. I have about 2" on my sidewalk/driveway and 4+" on the grass and my deck and my board. There's maybe 1/2"-1" on the busier streets.

I'm just saying there is a big discrepancy on amounts from one area to 50 feet away. Do u measure in an open field away from trees, north side of the house ?

If anyone reads my posts on this thread (or even yours) and makes a travel decision, they are fools to begin with. Last I checked, I am where I am and you are where you are. And we really can't comment on the infinite amount of places we are not. Advice to everyone, go outside, see for yourself, and make an educated decision. Cool?

I don't have any discrepancies anywhere on the grass, away from structures on any side of the house, as I also check the grass against the snowboard (I have a whole spreadsheet on this if you're interested). In windy situations there are often great discrepancies, which I've posted about in numbing detail for most people, I'm sure, which is why it's so hard to get consistent measurements in those situations.

But not today - today, the only discrepancy I've seen is paved vs. non-paved and one should never, ever measure on paved surfaces during the day (or even after dark for dark paved surfaces, which can hold heat for several hours).

I've got at least 5" on my back deck. For a bust, this storm is delivering.

In fairness to Numbers has been in heavier echoes in Metuchen more than some of us to his west

Looks like the banding wound up further northwest from initial forecasts so the big amounts expected in south jersey and shore got shifted further to the northwest

Screw fairness. If you weather weanies were good for anything, you'd make it snow at least 18" across all of NJ, with banding areas getting 24".

Anybody can forecast the weather. Let me know when y'all can control it.

We can definitely agree that people should gather info and see for themselves before making travel decisions that involve weather risks and in a perfect world, people would go right to the primary sources, like the NWS or dozens of other reputable weather/traffic sources.

However, fact is, as many have said, they find it easier to get their info here, since they don't have to hunt to find it, especially if they're already here - they know they'll get my best attempt to be as accurate as possible (and same for several other regular posters). And for those folks, your BS reports don't help. If you're truly in Hamilton, you're downplaying the snowfall and you know it. Just admit it and stop doing it.
