What sticks out here is the Lehigh Valley which was supposed to get a dusting to an inch ended up with some of the higher totals.

The snow never did stick to pavement on my block in Cherry Hill. It is now 27 degrees, but the NWS says it will rise to 38 (albeit with a lot of wind). I hope the frozen clear slush on the pavement melts today; any that doesn't will re-freeze tonight.

I like this kind of storm: snow falling so we could enjoy the sight of that, and then no shoveling needed afterward! It's been fun following the storm here with everyone; I notice there is less rancor than usual.

I would say 4-5 inches in Hillsborough area and probably only half inch to barely 2 inches on pavement in the highest spots

I make it to the RAC a few times a year. Unfortunately next Saturday is out, I'm already pretty booked up.

Back in the Wenzel days we had season tickets. Eventually we realized they just weren't getting used, what with work and little kids and all.

An inch or so seems right. No need to shovel, mother nature will take care of everything today.

This claims 5 inches in Cherry Hil measured by a trained spotter. Are these measurements taken on grass or on pavement?

Most likely a snowboard designef for taking measurements...would be similar to grassy surfaces amount..all pavement accumulations were far less than actual amounts that fell yesterday

Just shoveled the front, which was mainly melted with a southern exposure, and the back, which with a northern exposure never gets sun during the winter. About 5 inches of softened snow (due to the temperature) in the back.

only one report in NJ is higher than Numbers 6.25 in Metuchen

Yes, but multiple reports on-line for 6.0-6.75" in parts of Somerset, Middlesex and Union Counties and two other people in Metuchen reported 6.0". We got lucky on this one with those bands staying over us especially early.

Didn't think it was worth a new thread, but thought people should know that with the very cold air coming in now, we could see an Alberta Clipper system deliver an inch or so of fine powder very early Thursday and with temps in the teens/low 20s, even just an inch of snow could impact the Thursday morning commute, as it'll accumulate on all untreated (and even treated) surfaces. It's also possible we see a period of light snow Friday afternoon/evening, but that's pretty iffy (and most likely near the coast).

The first clipper system approaches Wednesday evening and then
slowly works its way across the region before moving offshore by
Thursday afternoon. The surface low tracks from the Great Lakes
and Ohio Valley Wednesday evening and moves off the Mid-
Atlantic coast late Thursday morning. Fairly potent H5 shortwave
passes through southeast PA and NJ and 125 KT jet streak passes
south of the Delmarva Thursday morning. With overnight lows in
the teens and 20s, there will be plenty of cold air in place to
support an all snow event starting in the evening, and then
really getting going from around midnight through daybreak or so
Thursday. QPF amounts will be light, generally around 1/10",
but temps will be cold enough to support around 1", but in some
cases, up to 2" of new snow Wednesday night through Thursday
morning. Could make for a slippery commute in most areas.

As per the original post, we're in the midst, now, of a relatively cold pattern and that's mostly expected to continue, with a few breaks. Lots of chatter about potential snow in the Day 11-13 range (near Christmas). I don't believe in specific forecasts for specific days this far out, but the long range models have gotten better at Day 10-15 patterns (above/below normal precip and temps), so it's at least worth watching. I will be annoyed if it snows here while I'm in Florida visiting family for the holidays...

So it's going to be cold in the winter, got it. Thanks! :)

1" of powder? @mildone must be excited.

Still on track for 1/2" to 1" along I-95/TPK (north of about Trenton) and 1-2" north of 78 (and especially north and west of 80/287). Unlikely to be more than 1/2" south of 195/276 in NJ/PA (although more likely in PA). This is a classic case where ~1" of snow on all surfaces at 20-25F right before a weekday rush hour will likely be more impactful than 4-6" on a weekend, with <1" on the roads with temps around 32F on a Saturday, i.e., this past weekend. This is not a major storm by any stretch, but if we do get an inch or more tomorrow, I guarantee people will be surprised and won't handle it well and we'll see accidents/tie-ups.

I get the impression that the start time will be about 11 p.m. in South Jersey, but later in central and north Jersey. I hope everyone is very careful on the roads tomorrow.

Winter Weather Advisories up from Mt. Holly for all of NE PA and the NW counties of NJ (Sussex/Warren/Hunterdon) for 2-3" of powder. Only 1-2" expected east of there for the rest of central/north Jersey and NYC metro, so no advisories issued for those locations Even 1-2" of powder at 20-25F right before/during rush hour could be a commuting mess in NJ. Discussion below. Maps to come.

http://forecast.weather.gov/product...&format=CI&version=1&glossary=1&highlight=off

Clipper low moving through the Great Lakes will be over the Ohio
Valley after midnight, and then will pass through New Jersey and
move offshore just after daybreak Thursday. The low looks to weaken
as it approaches the spine of the Appalachians between midnight and
daybreak Thursday, but seems to strengthen a bit once it is through
the Appalachians in the pre-dawn hours.

As a result, light snow develops this evening, first over the Lehigh
Valley, and then spreads east through midnight. Around an inch or so
of snow accumulation is expected over the Lehigh Valley and into the
Poconos, but then the snow really gets going as the low intensifies.
Best lift and dynamics will be to the north, where an additional 1-
2" of snow is expected across the Lehigh Valley, Pocono Mountains,
and into northern New Jersey for a total of 2-3". Temperatures will
be cold enough to support 15-20:1 snowfall ratios, so it will not
take much liquid QPF to result in accumulating snow.

Although borderline for a Winter Weather Advisory, feel it is
prudent to issue one for Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Warren, Sussex,
Carbon, and Monroe counties, as this snow will accumulate just prior
to and during the Thursday morning commute. For the rest of northern
New Jersey and into southeast Pennsylvania, around an inch of snow
is expected, perhaps close to 2" in parts of northwest New Jersey.
For these areas, we will issue a Special Weather Statement
highlighting the impacts to the morning commute. For southern New
Jersey and the Delmarva, accumulations should be less than an inch,
and not nearly as widespread as the accumulations will be to the
north.

Edit: here's the updated NWS Philly map...

Posting old info (the map showing <1" everywhere, was from 5 am this morning) is rarely helpful. The updated map is now visible (it's a live link), which shows the general 1-2" for NYC/LI/NENJ from NWS-NYC.

I'll remember to come back in a few hours to remind you that this map is old info.

Big difference between 8-hr old info in the weather world vs. 1-hr old info, especially within 12-24 hours of the start of an event. Maybe try to add something of value to the thread.

this event has the potential to surprise...clipper sometimes fizzle out over the mountains and do not produce....if this one holds together, with the cold, ratios will be high..possibly 15 or 20-1...could give someone 2-3 inches....and Mt Holly now has Middlesex/Somerset/Mercer/Hunterdon/Morris under a winter weather advisory for 2-3 inches...going to be a lot of surprised peeps on the road tomorrow if this verifies since its virtually been kept quiet

Step away for a few hours and it all changes, lol. Yeah, I was worried 1-2" was overdone, but with high ratios and a little more moisture, which is holding together, plus the short range models are showing 2+" I can see the advisory, but I'd say bust potential on the low end (i..e., it being more likely to not reach the 2" amounts) just went up, especially since the NWS in NYC has not upped their amounts (still mostly 1-2" except more on LI).

There is currently a very pretty snow falling in Lambertville. Small fine flakes but coating the porch quickly.

its snowing in earnest here...albeit lightly in Belle Mead but everything is dustily covered, most of this will be over by sunrise

Light snow here in Metuchen and just a dusting of pixie powder here; 26F. Expecting 1" and hoping for 2". Pretty sure we won't be near the top of the snowfall accumulations this time around...

Update 1:54AM (just got home from Christmas Party #7): about 2" on the ground, maybe more, sticking on the streets as well.

What a gorgeous night out there. We have 1.375" of pretty low bulk density snow out there - small dendrites - very birefringent with very low moisture content - I'd guess at least a 15:1 ratio. Snow stopped here around 2 am and I'm about to go to sleep (was up making the playlist for our dept. holiday party tomorrow). Looks like most folks got 1-2" with a few isolated 3" amounts reported.

Not sure if the band in central PA will make it here or not. Mt. Holly doesn't seem optimistic, talking about dropping the advisories early (not a surprise). All paved surfaces are covered with snow, but I imagine any treated major road with traffic will be ok in the morning, while sidewalks and sidestreets will be very slippery.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Mesoscale update: Vigorous but fast-moving snow band moved
through the southern half of the CWA during the past 3 hours.
Snow reports indicate generally 0.5-1.5 inch totals with the
band, mostly in about 1-2 hours. Pronounced dry slot has moved
into the area generally along/south of I-76/I-295 corridor, and
hi-res models show little precip occurring the rest of the night
in this area. Meanwhile, precip to the north looks lighter but
longer-lasting. For now, will keep current advisory as is given
the signal for at least light precip to the north for the next
few hours, but the snow looks mostly done Philly southward.
Expect slick roads tomorrow morning, but I suspect there will be
little additional snow. If current trends continue, portions of
the advisory will need to be cancelled early.

Grids update: Dew points were way too low (which makes sense
given the very sudden snowfall and shallow dry layer), so needed
to adjust these upward considerably overnight. Spatial
distribution of temperatures is largely based on presence of
snow or not, so frequent updates to temps will be required
through the night. For now, teens in the Poconos and twenties
elsewhere.

as usual you have more than here in Belle Mead where 1-1.25 inches of snow has falled. Light band coming through in the next hour. All in all a nice refresher that will stay around for 24-48 hours.
