Heard it on news 12 this am. Landing lane bridge will be closed for 6 weeks which in NJ means 6 months to a year. This could really screw up game day traffic flows. Make plans accordingly!
They are probably starting the project one day after the bulletin because its an EMERGENCY.You have to laugh at the DOT. You have 18 months of reduced traffic and no students on campus. And 5 weeks before the campus reopening they decide to start this project.
Some people just want to bitch and moan because they canThey are probably starting the project one day after the bulletin because its an EMERGENCY.
Wow aren't you special. I would agree with you only this bridge has been on the need to fix list/replace list since 2014.Some people just want to bitch and moan because they can
I can’t tell you how many times I have seen roads paved and then a few months later one of the utilities chop up the road for work (sometimes it’s emergency ,most often not ) .You have to laugh at the DOT. You have 18 months of reduced traffic and no students on campus. And 5 weeks before the campus reopening they decide to start this project.
The utilities work on their own schedule. They've held up many many road construction projects. At some point, the contractors just have to go ahead and do the work.I can’t tell you how many times I have seen roads paved and then a few months later one of the utilities chop up the road for work (sometimes it’s emergency ,most often not ) .
Where did it fit on the list of prioritized repairs? Just because it needs it doesn't mean that it happens quickly. They're are likely others that were deemed much more critical.Wow aren't you special. I would agree with you only this bridge has been on the need to fix list/replace list since 2014.
That old LL Bridge was a death trap waiting to happen.Back in the dark ages, before Route 18 bridge, LL was closed for a long time. Only was accorded was Albany St bridge or taking 287 to Easton Ave - that was a pain.
Critical enough to be demolished and replaced not just repaired.Where did it fit on the list of prioritized repairs? Just because it needs it doesn't mean that it happens quickly. They're are likely others that were deemed much more critical.
They have actually schedule the LL bridge to be replaced in 2023.Wow aren't you special. I would agree with you only this bridge has been on the need to fix list/replace list since 2014.
Yes , I know . It’s just a waste of taxpayer dollars and could be managed better. The utilities work on their own schedule. They've held up many many road construction projects. At some point, the contractors just have to go ahead and do the work.
Yep I know. That is the rub in this story. It was critical enough to knock down and rebuild not critical enough to repair and maintain. They have actually schedule the LL bridge to be replaced in 2023.

"What we have here is failure in communication" And the blame can probably be equally spread.
that's going to be the biggest pain if it's not open by sept.what about foot traffic? Pre and post game that is used for a lot of people who park in NB as well as students who don't want to wait for buses to go back to College Ave
But the thing is there is never blame."What we have here is failure in communication" And the blame can probably be equally spread.
To be clear, this is not the entirety of the Landing Lane Bridge over the River, but rather the much smaller bridge that spans the D&R Canal - evidence of this formerly being a swing bridge still exists, so you can imagine its age. Not sure because I haven't been over that way in a little while, but I wouldn't be surprised if these emergency repairs are related to the same bridge. In addition, when they do go through with this project, it would be nice if they could redesign the geometry of the Landing Lane/George Street intersection, but thats probably asking too much. They have actually schedule the LL bridge to be replaced in 2023.

Can't be as bad as it was before the Route 18 bridge opened in 1983, lol. It used to really suck going across the river back then via only the LL or Route 27 bridges...
The DOT announced plans in 2019 to replace the bridge in June 2022, according to a MyCentralJersey.com report. The bridge was originally built in 1895 and replaced in 1995.
While the figures in RU Golfer's post are almost correct (1895 bridge was replaced in 1991/92) - this is wrong. Re-read my post that you quoted - this is the span in discussion. So 1.0 lasted 100 years and 2.0 lasted 30.
I believe you are correct. Because the bridge over D&R Canal is in the historic district of the Canal, the bridge appearance will likely need to be mimicked when reconstructed and the swing mechanism preserved. I also believe the county has plans to make George Street one way at this location, which would allow a bike Lane on George for better access to the D&R path.To be clear, this is not the entirety of the Landing Lane Bridge over the River, but rather the much smaller bridge that spans the D&R Canal - evidence of this formerly being a swing bridge still exists, so you can imagine its age. The small bridge over the D&R is an older bridge built in 1920. The bridge over the Raritan, circa 1895, was replaced in the 1990's.His link says 1895. Is it 1985?
They have done that 3x in 4years on one of the main roads by me.I can’t tell you how many times I have seen roads paved and then a few months later one of the utilities chop up the road for work (sometimes it’s emergency ,most often not ) .
Well from what I know an inspection just revealed a problem. Like the bridge broke. You have to laugh at the DOT. You have 18 months of reduced traffic and no students on campus. And 5 weeks before the campus reopening they decide to start this project.
it happens. this was a big one a few years ago in NJ...Well from what I know an inspection just revealed a problem. Like the bridge broke.
I got my first car because of the LL bridge, maybe during the time you're talking about. In '65, I was a freshman living at The Heights (will always be that to me), the bridge was either limited to cars only or closed completely and the buses were doing the 287 route. After complaining to my father that I was spending hours a week going between campuses, not a huge exaggeration, he bought me a '62 Corvair for, I think, $700. Thanks Dad!Back in the dark ages, before Route 18 bridge, LL was closed for a long time. Only option was Albany St bridge or taking 287 to Easton Ave - that was a pain.
has anyone confirmed the bridge is closed? Thanks for the PSA! I have to go through there early tomorrow morning to Somerset so perfect timing. You are right --- in NJ terms, this will drag on for months. Forget 6 weeks.
They had detour signs for Landing Lane up on Rt. 18 South this morning and also by College Ave and Huntington Street. I didn't get THAT close to Landing Lane but from my vantage point it sure looked like it was closed. Traffic was no heavier than usual, but I was driving by at like 6:30am and then again like 7:30am.has anyone confirmed the bridge is closed?
