I recall the old bridge also had a wooden walkway and a friend was jogging over it and his foot fell through in the 80s. iirc, he broke that leg. That had to suck.Apparently they would have had to get Coast Guard approval to redo the piers to be able to put in a 4 lane bridge. Since they didn't want to take the time to do that, they used the existing piers with minor modifications to put in the new bridge. Typical short sighted approach to situations like this.
